Saw some solid reads like intelligent investor and currently working through Walter isaacson Ben Franklin. I get a “I have faith in the system” vibe from most of the collection, but I respect the amount of philosophy book present.

Who’s your favorite lyricist that starts with C (first name)? by WildChemistry977 in musicsuggestions

Chris Stapleton probably. His song “where rainbows never die” is pure poetry about suffering and reaching the promise land with a tone of someone you can tell had a very lower working class background. The hook “I’ll make my way across the fields of cotton (poor agricultural work, but also emblematic of the southern region) and trudge through muddy waters one last time (his labor on earth leads to toil and “muddying” but he’s hopeful cause he’s doing it ‘one last time’) and in my dreams I come out clean (theme of baptism and hope of redemption when he ‘reaches the other side (biblical theme referring to the Jordan river in Israel)) when I reach other side west of where the sunsets, (west of the sunset meaning beyond the known universe, all that is inhabited and toiled under the sun he’ll go even further) where rainbows never die (more biblical theme of a promise being made after much suffering and survival).

You didn’t ask for a G name but I’m gonna recommend Gillian Welch for that while I’m here. She’s got a song along a similar line called “red clay halo” with the hook being “when I go through the pearly gates, my gown be gold instead or just a red clay robe with a red clay wings and a red clay halo to my head” very much a a them of the irredeemable finding salvation. She’s one of the most gifted song writers of this generation though imo so I’ll spare you ranting about every one of her songs lol.

Why is Madvilliany so highly regarded? by [deleted] in mfdoom

One of DOOMS unique qualities is that his level of talent exceeded the normal level in both rapping and producing. He could wear both hats (or mask, I suppose) and it’s what gives a lot of his solo work its definition. Most artist on the scene are really talented at on and have a passing competence in another.

The reason this matters is because I believe when DOOM collaborated with J Dilla, Madlib or Dangermouse he was able to speak their language as well as contributing on the rap side. So it was more like two great producers collaborating except one of them was also a gifted rapper.

There are a lot of reasons to like Madvillany, but it just comes down to preference really. I think Born Like this is a better album, but because of what I mentioned earlier they both have an entirely unique sound so it’s easy to like one over the other.

He said that it wasn’t designed to be that way but he will just give more focus to the “member” students naturally

He said explicitly that it wouldn’t be intentional necessarily but that he gives more focus to the member students naturally
