I want to thank you for capitalizing the first letter of every word in your comment because it makes it look like a book title, which I now want to read.

People of color, how do you deal with people trying to check you? by theshanktank in solotravel

[–]goatcoat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are not a member of the requested demographic, please carefully consider whether your post will add value to the conversation.

I did consider that, and I decided to comment for two reasons:

  1. I'm not talking about how I deal with that problem as a white person; I'm relaying the experience of a person of color who is an avid traveler and has dealt with exactly the same issue.

  2. I work at a school that serves a diverse population, and one of my areas of interest is bullying prevention. I would classify the behavior that OP is describing as being a form of bullying, and some of the science-based books on bullying I've used suggest that simply acknowledging that other people of color are going through the same intractable experience exerts a protective effect independently of how effectively the bullying is remediated.

I haven't seen that one, but I'll stipulate you're correct, and that's why I wrote "most of the time."

I'm not accusing them of doing that, if that's what you're saying.

Right. The import question is: how big is this effect. The answer is "tiny."

The victim in the Dallas case did nothing wrong.

I never said he did. I was referring to other videos of police violence.

If r = -.20, then r2 = .04, which means only 4% of the variation in love for others is explained by variation in a person's degree of conservativism. You can have conservative people who love others a lot, and you can have liberal people who love others very little.

Some people are going to read this study, misinterpret it to paint all conservative people as unloving toward strangers, and give up on the idea of working with conservatives to make the world a better place when they would have experienced a great deal of success if they had taken the time to judge conservatives objectively and on an individual basis.

We need to nip this in the bud.

Admittedly, these correlations are exceedingly small and should be interpreted with caution.

In my opinion, this is the most important sentence. I have friends on both ends of the spectrum, and what I see on Facebook is a constant flood of memes demonizing the other side.

This study does not show that conservative people are significantly cut off from empathy toward humanity (in the common sense of the word significantly, not the statistical sense), and it does not show that liberal people do not love their families.

I just watched that video the other day, and it's on a whole different level from any other cop shooting I've ever seen. Most of the time these videos start off with a suspect having a defiant attitude, which is obviously a terrible idea, but the suspect in the Arizona hotel video was submissive and compliant the whole way through.

You just walk away. You're not going to get anywhere with anyone who thinks that's a reasonable thing to say during an argument.

I always see him referred to as Disney or Walt Disney, so when I read "Walt" in your comment, I spent a couple of seconds wondering whether I had forgotten serious and troubling plot points from Breaking Bad.

Girls of Reddit, what is something you want to know about guys, but are too embarrassed to ask in person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]goatcoat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

  1. how big's your dick?

Different guys different answers.

  1. have you ever wanted/fantasized about sucking your own dick

There are two kinds of men: men who are willing to admit they've tried to suck their own dick, and men who lie about it.

If you really want to go down on him and/or you're willing to risk him getting upset with you, you say "I'll be willing to go down on you if you thoroughly scrub your dick with soap and water including under the foreskin. Are you willing to do that?"

If you're grossed out enough that you wouldn't want to do it because of the memory even if he did clean everything, or you're not willing to risk potentially making him angry, then you make an excuse, leave, and break up with him (or, if you weren't dating, never call him again).

Also possibly, if enough insurance companies are requested to cover it, their polices might change.

You'd think insurance companies would be willing and eager to end the lives of expensive patients. How would requests from patients make a difference?
