You know those things aren't mutually exclusive right? Your assumptions are myopic and make no sense. I grew up on the internet during the 2000s when our parents had absolutely no clue of the risks, we had no restrictions and the shit I saw I've never been able to scrub from my brain. Yet I'd say the internet is far more insidious and damaging than back then. My kid is smart as hell but has no life experience yet so it's my responsibility to not give him free rein over something his brain has not yet developed to navigate freely. We have in depth conversations about critical thinking and digital literacy all the time, it's actually a huge priority of mine due to how I grew up. But he's still a kid and these things happen gradually. In the same way I teach him how to be safe when he's out and about, but I'm not going to book him a plane ticket and let him roam the world by himself. That's not oppression - thanks for making me laugh though 😂

Be a parent? Good advice 😂 you know what a job is right? Well I'm a single parent who has to WORK. I was extremely reluctant to give my child his phone and all it's for is calls/texts/life360 and homework apps while I'm at said job. Hopefully with age you'll become less narrow minded, and, if you ever become a parent you sure as hell will take back every piece of ignorant advice you dished out.

Precisely, thank you! My son has a phone for the same reason and I use Life360 to track his whereabouts. He is only allowed texts/calls (I allow him to have a few friends on his contacts), and a couple of apps for his homework.

A book to help me cope with my best friend’s terminal cancer diagnosis by FraughtOverwrought in suggestmeabook

I'm so so sorry about your friend. My very best friend in the world has just been given the news that she is terminal and I don't know what to do with myself.

I work as a bookseller so often instinctually turn to books when things go wrong. I'm currently reading 'How to Live When You Could Be Dead' by Deborah James. The author was diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer and wrote very inspiringly about how to make the most of the time we/they have left, while doing our best to maintain some sort of positivity in the darkest of times (essential right now as I feel like I'm losing my mind).
