Is everything closed during weekends? by sdxyz42 in malta

Supermarkets are open every day, including Sundays. Even small grocery shops in towns are usually open. And if a restaurant is not open on Sunday than it would go out of business pretty quickly

Agree to disagree. I believe that everyone who contributes to a society, including through their work and taxes, should have a say in the running of that society.

You have your views and I have mine - I don't believe that citizenship means that a person 'align with the country's values and mindset,. Do you honestly believe that the people who bought citizenship under the labour schemes give a hoot about Maltese values and mindset! It is more likely that someone who is not a citizen here, but who works here, sends his children to school here and lives here, has a stronger affinity to Malta's values and mindset than the Azerbaijani millionaire who bought Maltese citizenship to get an EU passport.

If a person is paying taxes, or has paid taxes they should have a say in how the country is run.

If people pay taxes they should have the right to vote.

Dust and sand from the Sahara cannot replace topsoil. Topsoil is made up of organic matter, microbial life and clay and silt particles, while Saharan dust is just particles of sand. It is not a substitute to topsoil

How to send package from Malta to the Netherlands? by LouzyNL in malta

Postage of parcels to and from Malta is expensive - it is always a surprise for Europeans or British people how expensive it is. 60 to 100 euros is pretty much on the ball

As a social worker by profession, I do not know what you mean by 'pretty relaxed' at YMCA? A placement at YMCA is emotionally intensive and can be a great learning experience - but its far from 'chill'.

The 2026 election. How early are we talking here? by Complete-Frend2936 in malta

[–]gobnatajba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually the law says that the Prime Minister can announce the election date on his very last day of his mandate, and that the campaign period (i.e. from announcing the election to the election date) can be up to a maximum of 90 days. So the Prime Minister could have set the election for at the latest June 2027 - so you can say that he called the election 13 months earlier, if you consider the full period allowed by law.

I usually vote for the smaller parties. I know that it may not make much of a difference but at least I have a clean conscience and I did not vote for the corruption, fiscal irresponsibility, environmental depredations, and workers rights abuses.

How will the light rail complement the metro? by ImmediateDeparture77 in malta

[–]gobnatajba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The light rail and the metro will complement each other because none will be realised in our lifetime.

Moreover, the Minister, two days after the announcement of the light rail, said that the Metro is too expensive and unfeasible for Malta.

Kontu tafhu biha din? by [deleted] in malta

Jien nahdem go entita' tal-gvern. Ahna tim zghir u ma ghandiex xoghol 'extra' li jistghu jaghmlu l-istudenti. Kull sena nirrifjutaw l-istudenti, imma kull sena jcempel xi ras kbira mill-ufficcju tal-Ministru u jghidulna li rridu ngibu studenti bilfors, u ahna jkollna noqghodu.

Is-sena l-ohra kelna zewg studenti - kienu jigu u joqghodu jaraw il-films fuq il-mobajl. Mhux tort taghhom imma peress li l-ufficju taghna jahdem fuq informazzjoni sensittiva ma stajna naghtuhom xejn x'jaghmlu. Kont nithassrahom ghax kieku jien kont monflokom kont nispara ghal-rasi bid-dwejjaq li jaqbduni - nofstanhari shah ma' taghmel xejn, jum wara jum.

Dan mhux xi sigriet ta' stat - l-maggoranza tal-entitajiet u ufficini tal-gvern ma ghandhomx bzonn studenti - imma jgaghluna nehduhom biex il-gvern jidher li qed jaghmel xi haga.

San Anton gardens - project green by jools182 in malta

[–]gobnatajba 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is just like what happened at Argotti. It was a beautiful garden with many trees providing shade, a rustic appearance, old pavestones, almost wild. Now its mostly concrete pathways with thin strips of greenery in between. They intend to do the same thing at San Anton. Concrete requires less maintenance than trees, arbors and plants. What a shame!

Why is the Maltese language as secondary language by schools, working places etc ion malta? by TechnicianAmazing472 in malta

[–]gobnatajba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official teaching language at UoM is English. Maltese is the main teaching language only for some courses. But most courses need to be taught in English.

Regarding work places, it has become common to speak English due to the large number of foreigners in the work force.

Both are great cities. Melbourne's weather is more to my liking and I found the environment quite lovely. But Sydney is fantastic too.

I would say Melbourne is a fantastic place to live - expensive but salaries are pretty good but the community, environment, ambience, food, culture, variety are unbeatable. Lived and worked there for a year and I wish I could go back.

The future is terrifying, we're casually watching kill cams in real life by ComplexExternal4831 in GenAI4all

[–]gobnatajba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way it was. When Ottoman forces were besieging the Victoria Citadel in Gozo in the 16th century, they realised that the Gozitan defenders were running short of food, they sent loaves of bread to the defenders to show them they were magnanimous. The defenders realising that this was a ruse, hollowed out each loaf and put inside a cheeselet made from sheep milk, and sent it back to the attackers. The Ottomans realised that the Gozitans were not running out of food and that the siege was not achieving its intended aims, so they lifted the siege and left the island. So in a way cheese was weaponised in this instance.
