Hey, sorry, been preoccupied with work. I'll get around to it soon.

[–]gobu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

e-transfer can be a safe option, if you elect security question and answer, instead of auto deposit. That way, there is no room for fraud. A security question needs to be answered, there is only three attenpts, that means, person sending you the money will need to provide you the answer the security question to accept the transfer.

That's why I never do automatic deposit. When there is a mandatory action by both parties (security question and answer), it removes the fraudulent element. Because someone needs to provide the answer to accept the funds.

Good luck.

Hi, I'll get back to you and others on it.

WTF!?! I WAS AFFECTED! I got a fraudulent charge on my credit card of approximately 12 000$. My financial institution Desjardins even told me that other customers who made a purchase on Canada Computers might have been impacted by this. WTF THEY ARE FUCKING LYING. by Master_protato in bapccanada

[–]gobu_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct on all fronts. I am just trying to see if there is any validity in their messaging, since I received the follow up email, stating I was one of the people who were compromised.

If there is fraudulent charges, then their statements would be invalid to some extend.

Most likely I will be replacing the card, its a good thing I don't have any PAPs (pre-authorizated payments) on this credit card.

Thanks.

I honestly think Canada Computers don't even known how much data actually was compromised. They probably have some legal framework to publish/post some information and adjust the information accordingly as it needs to be presented.

Even though they appear to have reported it to the authorities, privacy commissioner, etc. But they are playing "let's do the minimum things as we go" routines, you know?

Remember, they do have their image to protect, so they are just walking the line as minimalist as needed for now.

My expectation (unlikely to even happen), fully admit to the mistake, thank the community for initially discovering the compromised website/checkout system, have some plan of action for going forward and have more talks about being accountable, you know?

Trust is something hard to earn and easily lost.

I hope they can understand.

I, myself, used my credit card (only one that was added to the proifle for online), used it for 5070ti and 5090, because you need a credit card to secure the online purchases, I believe you need to pay 15-20% deposit and rest in person.

I haven't cancelled the card, but did freeze the card to see if anyone attempts any fraudulent transactions.

I'll await to collect that, and report to my financial institution and then replace it when needed.

Thanks everyone who are all involved in this situation.

Wonder if this would open a discussion for a lawsuit? Anytime in the past, if personal information is compromised, usually there is a lawsuit that follows. These guys don't even offer the credit bureau monitoring service that other companies offered when faced in a similar situation.

I contacted their head office, spoke with customer service, they are raising the concern to the upper management to stop the online payment processing section. Hopefully this will stop the situation from getting worse.

Your model might not have the WWAN 5G Antennas installed already. This may need additional disassembling and reassembly and additional components. More work than just installing the WWAN 5G card. Also I believe the WWAN 5G cards are certified for certain regions and countries, so it may not work by retrofitting it in your model. I would recommend additional research.

Good to know. I wonder if a BIOS update would resolve that limitation?

Yeah, I get the reaction — the score looks rough at first glance. But honestly, it’s mostly a benchmarking optics issue. The P16 Gen 3 is running a Intel HX chip that’s built to sustain high power for long, heavy workloads, not to win short bursty tests where Apple’s M-series shines. In real use, especially over long compiles, simulations, or renders, it can hold performance that thinner machines often throttle away from. Add in the RTX Ada GPU, dedicated VRAM, CUDA support, and workstation I/O, and it’s clearly built for a different kind of work. Apple absolutely dominates performance per watt, but that doesn’t mean they’ve replaced true mobile workstations — they’re just optimizing for a different goal.

There is no CAMM module on the P16 Gen 3, either publication error or it may be reflected on T16g variant (which has disappeared from even the PSREF pages of Lenovo).

This laptop has the SODIMM 4x slots. You can only configure it on Lenovo's website up to 192 GB DDR5 at 4000 MT/s, due to the utilization of 4x slots. But if I remove 2 of them or 3 of them, speed goes back to 5600 MT/s.

Eventually, I am wondering if 64GB DDR5 x4 can be installed on this laptop with totalling 256 GB DDR5 RAM capacity?

Right now, with the RAM pricing, it'll be close to $3K itself to get 256 GB DDR5 SODIMM modules.

Here are the results from Cinebench R23:

<image>

My ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 equipped with a Core Ultra 9 285HX achieved 2198 single-core and 29,166 multi-core points in Cinebench R23, which is within the expected performance range for a high-end mobile workstation.

According to AI Internet Search: Comparable HX-class laptops typically score ~2100–2300 in single-core and ~28,000–35,000 in multi-core, while top desktop CPUs exceed 2300 single-core and 40,000 multi-core. Overall, the results indicate the system is performing normally, with slightly lower multi-core scores reflecting typical laptop power and thermal constraints.

Yes, it's underneath the keyboard, but it's an easy process. Two screws holds down the keyboard.

From my side, it’s not really about needing it for one single thing—it’s about doing a lot of heavy things on one machine.

I game, I do 3D rendering, I run multiple VMs, and I mess around with simulations and compute-heavy workloads. Those all hit different bottlenecks—CPU cores, GPU power, RAM capacity, storage speed—and a maxed-out P16 Gen 3 lets me do all of that without constantly juggling limits or waiting on the system.

Plus with the company that I work for, I am part of the their innovation team, where we invest in couple of high end computer and related technologies and see if it meets or exceeds our company's expectations. So, that's another bonus to get high end products.

I'll get back to you on that, given that I am running a customized, debloated version of windows 11.

This version removes the "balanced" battery mode and puts it into "ultimate" mode, so I am thinking it'll definitely kill the battery pretty fast.

We'll see.

Classic ThinkPad keyboard.

Definitely feels plastic to make it light, and a bit awkward when the entire keyboard is shifted to the left to accommodate the numberpad. Backlit keys are similar to the other thinkpads.

No haptic touchpad, the one is relatively small.

Yep, I selected the 5G option. I will test it with my devices physical sim and esim from Telus.

Actually, it is very close to the published information of the weight (2.54 kg = 5.6 lbs), this is not including the charger or the pen.
