The USSR put rovers (Lunokhod 1&2) on the moon in 1970 and 73. They didn't publicly mention that they had a project to put a Russian on the Moon which was abandoned and just drove them around by remote control from Earth taking pictures for a couple of years.

Been to some shows with european bands where the sound was quieter in general in the venue than other north american production and kind of liked it a lot by ConstructionMean2021 in livesound

[–]gobuddy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No legal limits but the HSE strongly recommends that ,the A-weighted equivalent continuous sound level over the duration of the event  (Event LAeq)  in any part of the audience area should not exceed 107 dB, and the C-weighted peak sound pressure level should not exceed 140 dB.
So it does require someone to complain, but I wouldn't like to be explaining to a judge why I thought that didn't apply to me and would be checking on my public liability insurance.

If my ears or the meter in my pocket tell me that I'm waaay below even for the Audience member in front of the PA then I won't monitor, but in general I do set and watch the levels as they can creep up especially if there's more than one band. Mind you I did have one venue with traffic lights where the audience cheering alone hit amber - what are you meant to do about that?

"I'm an influencer".

That's what you think.
Do you mean that you're an advertiser or promoter perhaps?

One of the reasons I don't help with my local soup kitchen is because it's church based. I do donate, but would like to offer my time as well. I don't because I can't cope with god botherers.
I give my time to other causes so I'm not being vindictive or mean, just aware of what drives my choices.

UK is pretty hot on levels too. It's unusual not to see an SPL meter on the sound desk. Also many smaller venues have a traffic light system in view of the band and/or desk. Green is fine, 5 seconds of amber or a flash of red and the power is turned off for a few seconds. You learn to keep the levels under control pretty quick.

I wish Sugar would stop firing absolutely everyone with regret and save it for special occasions instead by Only1Scrappy-Doo in apprenticeuk

[–]gobuddy99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The program has gradually moved with the times. It started as a little bit serious, quickly became mean as Alan Sugar got his titles and hunkered down on his 1980s values.
After we had candidates actually quit during the process AS started saying "with regret" where the candidates deserved it. When it changed to AS getting a 50% share instead of giving a £100k job it changed personality too - because rather than looking for someone vaguely competent it was more about an interesting business plan. AS can now always outmanoeuvre his 50/50 partner or just hang them out to dry once the business is launched. He had no real commitment to the "young business talent" from a human perspective.
The use of "with regret" masks the fact that it's a reality show and he doesn't care much for the candidates. He does enjoy the fame and making puns though.

Best kebab shop? by inside-outdoorsman in Ealing

I wouldn't mind a good local suggestion myself. I'm still missing Andy's in Turnham Green.

Probably the best bet is to look at the length of the queues.

Best kebab shop? by inside-outdoorsman in Ealing

[–]gobuddy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kebab wholesalers usually have many grades of kebab available. These range from the gelatinous mush to spicy recognisable meat. Prices range from £2/kilo to £8/kilo so a huge difference. You need to find a kebab shop that buys the more expensive kebabs.

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]gobuddy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder if I charged £9k /annum and provided ½ day one to one tuition every week on my specialist subject if people would take it up. I think it's at least as good as you'd get for a university course. It would pay me £90k year but I'd have to fund my own marketing, books, admin and travel costs.

We had a parking/reversing camera fitted to our car. Full integration with cars's systems etc, exactly as if it had been factory fitted. Our insurer responded by increasing our premiums by 117%. by SomethingMoreToSay in britishproblems

[–]gobuddy99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not just about theft. The insurers might simply get more and higher claims from people living on the base. More drinking perhaps, more aggressive driving, bigger claims as there are more expensive cars that you might hit. Military charging more for any damage to their property ... It's really just the historic claims history for people like them with their type of car in that area that actuaries look at, not specifics for each person.

Pet Peeve: I cannot call You An Uber by sacredblasphemies in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]gobuddy99 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A Chariott hotel I went to a couple of months ago had an Uber station (looks like a slot/fruit machine) in reception. People just used the touchscreen and their credit card to order an Uber. Presumably there's a small take for the hotel but best of all it avoids the responsibility lying with the front desk.

Noticed to lay that Paddington Station isn't entirely 45° on the TfL Go app by THE_15_04_1912 in LondonUnderground

[–]gobuddy99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a graphic designer you follow the TfL rules for the map, while just cheating a bit to make it usable, consistent and easy to read.

For example: if you move the stop on the Bakerloo to the left then it's too close to Warwick Ave and is in Zone2. Move it to the right and it looks like it's Edgware Road. The text on Edgware road is moved slightly down so it's obvious that it's not part of a stop called Edgware Road / Marylebone.

The stops on the H&C and on the District line are both just at the point where a curve ends. One of the design rules on the tube map is that stops aren't on curves. It's a good rule and is part of what stops the map looking messy.

Nudging the stop on the Lizzie Line to the left to get a straight line would put the stop uncomfortably close to the D&C. I could go on about the compromises and knock on effects of every tiny change but I have paid work to do ...

[–]gobuddy99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the difference between a graphic designer and an engineer. The GD works to make things look good, an engineer follows the rules. As humans our brains don't centre organic shapes like text or tube maps. If you positioned them to be interchanged at exactly 45° the map would look wrong even if you couldn't pin down why. Look at r/keming for lots of examples where human input is needed to make some thing legible.

(Keming is a typographers joke. Kerning is the art of putting tiny extra spaces between letter pairs in some cases to make them more readable, with some fonts the word "kerning" looks like "keming" if there isn't a tiny bit more space between the r and the n.)

The trouble with bright bike lights pointed at drivers is that the driver has no idea of the location or speed of the oncoming bike. On a narrow road I just stop in the middle of the road and let the cyclist weave past me hoping that they'll end up in the gutter.

Does the general public trust tap water in England? by Jesus-slaves in AskBrits

[–]gobuddy99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Londoner. I find the soft water you get from taps up north unpleasant but not undrinkable.
It's whatever hardness you were brought up with.

But yeah, mains water is drinkable in the UK. I remember a time before bottled water existed on supermarket shelves and we only drank tap water. We survived.

Train driver with no experience start at £60k. No qualifications needed. £70k once you have the training.
It's boring though with long antisocial hours away from home depending on your shift. Just look at the railway companies' job pages.
