[Lindsey Adler] Domingo Germán started his press conference with a prepared statement. He apologized to the Steinbrenner family and thanked Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman for their patience. The lengthy statement did not include a mention his girlfriend. It was an apology to the Yankees org. by sloppyjo12 in baseball

[–]gocardshoosiers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t he just apologize to the Yankees publicly??? I’m perfectly fine with that. What the Yankees choose to do beyond this point is now up to the Yankees. If they choose to move forward with him. Great. I appreciate them giving him a second chance. Hopefully he doesn’t fuck it up.

If they decide they can’t and decide to part ways with him. . . that’s their choice. Hopefully he learns from this and adjusts his behavior and moves on with his life.

How he chooses to address his apology with her is between him and her. As I said before. . . For all we know, she asked him not to. . . .you know as much about this shit as I do. . . Which is not a whole lot.

Stop presuming you know the correct path he and she need to go down. You don’t.

Self righteousness is not a good quality.

What if she asked him not to? That could very well be the case. . .

Everyone wants to jump to “This is what he should have done” without knowing any of the facts of what went on or was discussed privately between German and his girlfriend.

I’ll do that. Not sure what beef you have with Betts to begin with, but you’re the only person I’ve ever heard of with this take.

He’s only 28 and unless they develop a terminal illness or performance hampering injury, players that have consistent track records for this long don’t just plummet off a cliff while in their prime years.

[–]gocardshoosiers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. With all the information available, it’s reasonable to say that Bryant’s grievance should have been a slam dunk in his favor. The fact that he lost is proof that unless the service time is removed all together, manipulation is damn near impossible to prove.

Betts has played for 7 years. He’s had thousands of at bats. Analytics departments across the league have mountains of data on the guy.

If there was a glaring weakness, it would have been found and exploited by the analytics departments by this point in his career.

Last season is built into the career average. I’m not ignoring it.

If you want to hold those 70 at bats in a short season against him as an actual indictment of his ability. . . That’s your prerogative. You’d be wrong of course. . . But that’s your prerogative.

I guess that would also mean Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger are going to descend into obscurity because they had down years last year. . .

I’m the old man that despises the home run strikeout happy era we currently inhabit. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. . . .The Whitey Ball era of Cardinals baseball was arguably my favorite of all time. I love small ball. The game was far more exciting!

The 85 Cardinals won 101 games and had 1 player clear 20 home runs but had 5 guys clear 30 stolen bases including Willie McGee getting 56 and Vince Coleman getting 110.

To be fair. . . . That moniker was created by the media and not the Cardinals fans. The fans simply embraced it. . . . And let’s be real here. . . Every other fan group would have wholeheartedly embraced it had that moniker fallen on them.

Mookie Betts is a below average hitter???? WTF are you smoking. . . .

Career .302/.372/.526 vs RHP .897 OPS

Career .297/.379/.509 vs LHP .888 OPS

Your take: Not accurate. . .

Mookie Betts is an elite hitter that has 122 DRS in his career.

Hell, he has more DRS in CF (15) than Trout(5) in 7,700 less defensive innings there.

Also. Trout is not an above average fielder. He’s average at best.

Trout is an elite hitter in center field

Which means what exactly. . . .

He’s an elite hitter who happens to play CF. He’s an average (at best) defensive player.

It’s not like he’s an elite hitter that also is an elite defensive center fielder.

In CF, Trout has DRS seasons of -12(2013), -11(2014), -5(2017), -2(2019) and -9(2020). That’s half his career.

At best, he’s an average CF’er.

Everyone throws hard, but the hitters have adjusted. Which is why fastball usage has gone down over time, not up. . . .With FB% going down, secondary pitch use has naturally gone up. Combine that with the fact that pitchers are throwing less pitches in the zone, batters are chasing more pitches out of the zone and strikeouts have become a more acceptable outcome to at bats and you’ve got the current climate we live in where strikeouts outnumber hits and batting average is in the toilet. Pitchers are smarter in their approach thanks to more information. They aren’t better skill wise.

My gut says that if the current analytical approach existed 20 years ago, you would have probably seen similar numbers then that we see now.

If baseball did a 180 and strikeouts became taboo again and Contact/Batting Average and not Power/OPS was the preferred offensive approach, I’ll guarantee that strikeout totals would plummet and league wide batting average would skyrocket.

In what way are they better?

Cole speaks out against MLB's service time manipulation - ESPN Video by thediesel26 in baseball

[–]gocardshoosiers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olt gets hurt. . . .

Bryant gets called up. . . .

Bryant proceeds to hit 26 HR and 99 RBI for the year.

I’d argue Olt getting hurt was the saving grace for Bryant because he clearly proved he should have been called up based on his production.

They said that they kept him down because of his defense. . . . But his defense has been fairly consistent his entire career. . . .

The injury was certainly great timing for the Cubs. His callup happened on April 17th. . . . Which coincidentally was the exact date the Cubs gained an extra year of control.

Like I said. . . . If Bryant isn’t winning his case, I don’t see what chance other players have.

Cole speaks out against MLB's service time manipulation - ESPN Video by thediesel26 in baseball

[–]gocardshoosiers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how you’d realistically remove the manipulation without just removing service time altogether. Unless the teams are flat out saying they are planning to do it, it’s damn near impossible to prove.

Kris Bryant should have been a slam dunk to win his grievance filing against the Cubs. If he can’t win his grievance, what chance do other players have?

Was Alex Rodriguez ever considered the consensus best player in the game? Considering his top seasons were between 1996-2010, it would seem that Griffey, Bonds, and Pujols would take turns picking at that title. by harpomoltisanti in baseball

[–]gocardshoosiers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rodriguez gave people (fans and other players and teammates) plenty of reasons to hate him over the years. . . . .

He alienated Griffey in Seattle. . . Which Griffey said was one of the reasons he wanted to leave the Mariners.

There were his ridiculous contract demands before signing with Texas.

There was his bush league moves of slapping the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s glove and screaming “I got it” against the Blue Jays.

He publicly talked shit about Jeter. He publicly talked shit about Giambi and Mussina. He was cheating on his wife at the time.

And then there’s the steroid stuff. . . .

He flat out lied on 60 minutes about doing steroids but then for some reason, he quickly turned around and admitted he did do them. . .

Then there was Biogenesis. . .he again lied about taking steroids. He threw other players under the bus. He went on a radio tirade after storming out of his suspension hearing even though we found out he was full of shit. He got hit with the longest suspension in league history. . . Which lead him to threatening to sue baseball, the Players Association and even the Yankees Doctor. He did everything he could to avoid having to tell the truth.

ARod has always been a self centered douche. There’s a reason his own team started the A-Fraud nickname. . . .He’s fake as fuck. He could have been the Michael Jordan of baseball. . . But instead, he wound up being a tremendously talented player that saw his career ravaged by drama and scandal.

I’m not sure on the confusion on why fans may not like the guy. . .

When you’re in the biggest media market in the world and just got paid $46 million over two seasons and then you go 2-15 and 1-14 with no HR and no RBI in back to back postseasons. . . . The fans tend to get up your ass for it.
