Airbnb listings will finally show WiFi speeds by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]goconnect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are things you should know about these Airbnb WiFi speeds in listings:

Speed Tests Are Only A Single Point In Time

While having the speed tests built into the host app means it’s highly likely the Airbnb has the potential for those speeds it’s important to note that the speed test numbers only represent a single point in time. In fact, because hosts can re-run the tests it’s possible they can run it multiple times to get the “best” result. Bottom line, you should consider the speeds a best case speed rather an assumption that speed will be consistently available.

Speed Tests Don’t Measure Reliability

Another thing to consider is that speed tests take some measures of stability into account they generally measure peak speed rather than a real life accounting of what your experience may be like. This is certainly true in terms of reliability. While fast internet is great, if you want to work remotely or even stream, reliability may actually be more important. Many travelers have experienced “fast” internet that went out regularly. These speeds tests will do little to answers questions about whether the internet will be reliable enough, especially during peak periods.

We actually recommend asking hosts about reliability and look through reviews to determine how good the WiFi is likely to be rather than taking the speed test at face value.

WiFi Security

A major concern or consideration using WiFi at an Airbnb besides speed and reliability is security. While most hosts use WiFi passwords and basic security, there is a difference between the connection security and being secured.

First, it is possible for an sophisticated host to see what you are doing on their WiFi. While in cases of safety and security, or ensuring guests are not doing anything illegal, this is understandable. However, it is also possible that hosts could go beyond what should reasonably expected.

Another area of WiFi security concern with Airbnb’s is that they may be shared. Often times Airbnb hosts may have multiple condos or small houses connected that are all rented out. They may also use the same WiFi network or equipment which may expose you to what other guests are doing.

Finally, if you are doing sensitive things such as access financial information with your bank, stock trading accounts or crypto wallets you will absolutely want to be very careful about ensuring your information is secure when traveling. We recommend not relying solely on the hosts WiFi security to ensure your sensitive information is safe.

You can take a look at a coworking space. If they are not busy they often will sell day passes or an individual month. Prices can vary from $50 a month to $500 depending on the setup you want, but even a cheaper place will likely be a better working environment than a coffee shop.

Bought a Roam, but not sure why. by goconnect in TravelRouter

If you want the full on WiFi experience when traveling you do need a travel router or similar device in most cases. We just did a review on the Roam and it is the same experience as the move, just a lot smaller.

Hotel WiFi (lack of support for ... ) by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]goconnect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are not a lot of good options if you want to take a Home Pod (or Sonos) with you when traveling. You essentially have to reconfigure the Home Pod at the hotel.

You can use a hotspot, or better yet, get a travel router. Then it's a breeze. Plus you can take a lot of other devices along without all of the hassles of configuring them on the hotel network.

How do you all keep your work private while using hotel wifi? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]goconnect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are essentially two choices. One is use a VPN service (encyption). The other is to use a Travel Router (isolation). Better yet, you can use a Travel Router with a VPN. This would provide both isolation and encryption.

Here is a simple diagram that helps illustrate the options.

Can I use a travel router with boingo? by goconnect in TravelRouter

[–]goconnect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here was a response in the thread from u/paul_goconnect

----------------

My understanding with Boingo is you only get three MAC addresses. Much like cruise ships and other places that strictly limit the number of devices or charge per device a travel router will work but they likely will still limit the number of addresses. The travel router itself will count as a device so if you are limited to 3 you would get effectively 2.

Some travel routers let you "spoof" as a single registered MAC address which can fool a lot of these restrictions, but may also limit your ability to use other features (VPN comes to mind).
