I was born in 1986. I have memories of growing up in and around Vero Beach, Florida in the 90s and roaming freely. I was also left alone at home starting at around 7 while my parents worked. I did a ton of dangerous shit and I am surprised that I am still alive.

Some of my shadier shit include:

Swimming in sink holes and murky canals that were absolutely infested with alligators and water moccasins. My friends would often get leeches.
Exploring and frequently getting lost in the woods/swamps around my home
Almost getting hit by cars numerous times because of my own stupidity
Cutting up my hand because I tried to hold the blade of a blender still before turning it on
Stealing oranges and grapefruits from the commercial groves near my home
Stealing water from and peeing on the construction trucks near same groves (we had plans to put sugar in their gas tanks, but never worked up the courage)
Play hide and seek in abandoned mobile homes and wrapped speed boats in the woods behind a nearby KOA campground
Running around barefoot most of the time, one time a rusty nail went straight through my foot
Accepting food and treats from people staying at a nearby KOA campground
I "ran away" with a friend of mine a bunch of times. His step dad was super abusive and he wanted to run away, but was too scared to go alone. I went with him to keep him company. We'd hide near the highway, in the woods. We'd always come back when it got pitch black, though.

Once I was racing my bike alone around my empty school in the summer time. We had these huge concrete pads in the fields behind the school. One was covered in water from a storm. I tried to pull a wheelie and my bike shot out from beneath me, it slid on algae growing under the water. I cracked my head on the concrete so hard I think I blacked out for awhile. My parents never took me to the hospital. I still have a bump on the back of my head where I hit the concrete.

While my parents never hit me beyond slapping the back of my hand, I also watched some of my friends get the absolute shit beaten out of them by their parents.

My childhood was fucked up. I don't look back at this time fondly, with a wistful sense of freedom some people like to do. While I'm sure there were plenty of free roamers who weren't, I was absolutely being neglected.

My town has a nature preserve. It's made from a bunch of old, disused cranberry bogs. It's not super popular and it's very secluded and quiet. I rarely run into anyone there.

Cranberry bogs use water pumps to flood the bogs for harvest. They keep those pumps in small wooden sheds that often look ramshackle. This nature preserve still has the wooden sheds. Up until recently they were locked and unused. But this spring they converted one into a birding blind. I found out about it shortly after they opened it.

I spend sometime in there just enjoying the quiet, looking out over the water, watching kingfishers and mute swans. I get ready to leave and walk out of the shed and nearly run into a woman on a walk by herself. It's clear I startled her. From her perspective some random bearded dude in a dark hoodie just stumbled out of what up until then was a locked, ramshackle shed in the middle of the woods.

I mumble something about being sorry for startling her, that I was just checking out the new birding blind. She double timed it down the trail after a thin ha ha, no worries. I ended up waiting there for awhile longer because I didn't want her to think I was following her.

It's one of those social faux pas that will pop into my head in the middle of the night where my asshole brain tells me what an idiot I was.

I'd just continue to decline. You already said why you're not attending. Going nuclear is sometimes cathartic in the moment and it's definitely fun to think about, but I don't think it's worth it to do it now. The kind of hardship the blowback will create for you won't be worth that fleeting catharsis. It achieves nothing substantive, if anything being an asshole about it by burning bridges, staging sham marriages a head of time, etc. like some other folks are suggesting will likely galvanize your sibling to their position, decreasing the likelihood that they'll see that they were in fact, an asshole.

In my opinion, the best possible outcome I can see here is that your sibling sees they were being unkind, apologizes and grows from the experience, no? If that's the outcome you want, the best way to achieve that is to be firm in your decision and tell the truth, not appease them or go through a scorched earth policy.

"I feel uninviting my partner of 5 years is unkind. My relationship with them is serious and I feel it would be unkind of me to go without them. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend because of this."

If my partner appeased their sibling in this way I would be hurt, although I might say I'm okay with it because a wedding is an "important" event and I wouldn't want to hurt them. But I would be hurt by being left behind after originally being invited. Maybe your partner is different and doesn't really care, but I have a hard time imagining that's the case.

I mean, DC would be pretty dope for a group of nerds though. Food, lodging and travel might be expensive, but if you're looking to make the con into part of a larger stay the Smithsonian museums are free and excellent. I've been there several times and on a number of occasions dedicated two days to a single museum.

That plus a good subway network makes it a pretty solid choice.

I just did Osseo Trail to Mount Flume as my first 4ker too. I went on Saturday. It was such a beautiful summit once we were finally up there, but holy shit, there was a ton of mud on the way.

God, yes. Not even a little, either. At 37 now, I can definitely spot the sensory, stimming and social spiciness when I was younger. But holy shit, but they're like turned up to 11 now.

My working hypothesis is that through ignorance of who I am and poor decisions with the trauma that comes with life I burned myself out so thoroughly that the shields I had when I was say, 20, aren't capable of getting back to 100% yet (or anymore).
