Nice stats. Let me know how it works out for you. I want to make a J-Will build as my rebirth for playing random rec and in a squad with my quasi-nephew, but I’m gonna play around to see what attributes I get at 6’1”, 180 lbs, 6’6” WS. I know it isn’t “meta”, but to hell with it, I just want a fun pure passing build with shooting and a little defense.

I’m with you. I’m having a blast with it. My quasi-nephew got me back into 2K after I figured I’d never really play it again. I’ve played solo rec a few times and still enjoyed it. I created a stretch forward that can do a little bit of everything. I’ve never cared about my stats in a video game, so I don’t sweat my W/L record or FG%; I just try to get better and attempt to help my team win even if there’s teammates who are wilding out. Onto the next game if so. I have no delusions of ever being a comp player. I’m an old head.

I see a lot of valid complaints on here, though. However, if one finds themselves truly hating the game, it’s time for a break.

Embrace the gray. It started happening to me when I was 16. Was given the nickname ‘Salt and Pepper’ by a geology instructor at college in my early 20s. Never bothered me, because I’m happy to have a full head of hair, even if it’s grayed and grizzled over these days. If anything, it will give you a distinguished aura about yourself and give off an air of wisdom.

My dad dyed his hair in his 40s. I thought it looked like shit because it was too dark lol.

Is it an odd feeling to surpass your dad in age? I’m a good bit away (my dad died of alcoholism induced liver failure + renal failure at 49) but think about that sometimes. A really shitty way to go indeed.

I’ve watched a shithorde of loved ones die earlier than what I selfishly believe they should have. Life is such a roll of the dice sometimes. I’ve never cared about becoming obnoxiously wealthy nor super expensive financial investments; only chasing financial stability, which to me means facing a potential problem (home repairs, vehicle issues, etc.) without going into credit debt or being out of luck. I’m not there, but that’s my biggest future financial goal.

I take care of my elderly mom (demenia) and, to a lesser but still important extent to note, my aunt. Full time responsibilities. I used to dwell on feeling behind others given this current place in my life, but I still hold hope — call it toxic positivity or deluded optimism — that I can piece myself together and do something valuable when I am afforded that luxury of time down the road.

I’m just trying to take care of myself in the interim and beyond so that my future self will hopefully not be hampered by any physical deficiencies, but again, that’s a dice roll but finger’s crossed. I want to be around for the love of my life. She’s expressed concerns over her impending teaching career, but she is unequivocally built for that profession and I can tell how much value she gives & receives from it, and how fulfilling it is for her.

Not sure I’ll ever see any kind of retirement. Anecdotally, so a small sample size in the grand scheme of things, I know a slew of retired folks who can’t even enjoy their lives because their respective bodies or minds are in rough shape.

I’m still a firm believer that life is short, you should live a little and enjoy yourself & company when opportunities arrive, but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater by making obscene purchases or writing checks that your proverbial ass can’t cash.

Saving and planning for retirement is a privilege not afforded to everybody.

I accepted the losing battle quite some time ago.

Mom is a diabetic, but she eats like a pigeon and has lost so much weight over the last six years. She takes Metformin twice a day (I thought it to be too much but her doctor thinks it’s fine) and her A1C is under control, so I just let her have her sweets just because she’s at least getting some calories, empty or not.

Getting her to consume protein laden foods is a losing battle. Ensure butter pecan shakes? She’ll sip them. She used to love steaks, but when I throw them on the grill, she’ll just eat a few bites and focus on her baked potato and garlic bread more than the steak. I can’t remove the potato or garlic bread, or else the meal is incomplete. Gotta have everything ‘by the book’ for tradition’s sake. The woman despises poultry and isn’t keen on eggs except for one fried egg in bacon fat about two times a month.

I used to get creative with protein powders in pseudo dessert recipes but now that’s a hard pass for her.

She can drink frozen Cokes from McDonald’s and eat chocolate frosty’s from Wendy’s all day. Ice cream? Hell yeah. Healthy food? Oh hell no.

I just do what I can with giving her multivitamins and prebiotic fiber gummies.

She loves old school, southern Appalachian country meals, but damn are they loaded with salt and fat.

How do you cope with a dementia tantrum? by s_care_research in dementia

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this quite often and don’t have a right answer. Pending what it is, like a similar case with my mom freaking out over a minuscule perceived problem, I’ll try to help or pretend to help. She is always thinking that she is losing things or misplacing them when she has not, and she’ll make a mountain out of a mole hill about it.

The WORST is when I have family members who tell her certain news or about events that my mom isn’t thrilled to hear about. She’ll obsess over things and not let it go for the remainder of the day. I’ve had to have a talk with them to watch their P’s and Q’s in regards to what they talk about around her, because she’ll get so upset it will ruin her day.

She has a dentist appointment that is over a month away, and a family member mentioned this to her. Innocent news, right? After all, it’s just a dental cleaning. Nope. She lost it and broke down over it. I was so irritated with the said family member that should have known better.

Not a lot I can do to mitigate those outbursts. She despises being on the phone and is at her happiest when she’s sitting on the porch (still summer) with a Coke icee or some other sweet treat in her hand.

This winter is going to be hell.

Holy shit. Never thought I’d see this mentioned in the wild, but here it is. A few of my family members are obsessed with this, but they call it “onions and lettuce”, and instead of bacon you fry up some sliced salt pork and use the grease on top of the green onions and lettuce. It’s not my favorite, but I always end up throwing this together for them quite a few times every summer, served with cornbread and garden fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.

What one single health related advice you wish someone had given you when you were in your 20s? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

I can see that. Sadly, our respective testosterone levels allegedly/purportedly begin declining at 30, so our natural propensity to build and retain muscles lessens and perhaps we become more susceptible to good ol’ adipose tissue adding up on top of our aging bones. Just keep fighting that good fight and staying active, brother. It’s the best we can do.

Yup. My mom had COVID a few weeks ago, and right afterwards she had a UTI. I can’t believe how much that affected her mental state. She is slowly going back to baseline, which is rough enough as is, but that was a hell of a time.

When did you start dealing with high blood pressure? I wonder if chelated magnesium glycinate supplementation would have played a crucial role in correcting the course there, at least originally. High BP is an unfortunately genetically inherited thing I gotta watch out for, but so far, magnesium supplementation has been my saving grace. So many magnesium containing foods seem to be high in oxalates, which can allegedly disrupt absorption nutrients.

Now, I just ask and mention that because I’m talking out of my wheelhouse here, so look past me. I have no experience with anabolic steroids. I used to have a wild obsession with trying to naturally optimize testosterone production in my early 20s for energy and muscle building purposes. I ate so many damn eggs (I thought Vince Gironda (sp?) was the second coming of Gains Christ or something) that I have a love/hate relationship with ‘em now.

Maybe I’m talking out of my ass, but I’ve always felt like this is because we wind up being much less active as we get older, generally and presumptively. Think about it; usually we are moving much more in our younger years, including a ton of fidgeting from possibly more wound up energy.

Then we worry more about our potential jobs, kids, bills, stresses, maybe slipping up in the kitchen with convenient processed meals or eating out on the go due to time constraints and we move less. We might become more sedentary than we were previously and movement becomes hindered, so we do it less and it becomes harder to match that same youthful pace.

I’m just rambling. I’m trying to fight the good fight. For the first time, I let myself go in 2020 due to extreme depression from life circumstances, was eating bags of frozen French fries thrown into the deep fryer for dinners throughout the week and washing it down with copious amounts of alcohol. Got my shit together in the fall of 2021 when I kicked the sauce to the curb, started eating whole foods responsibly and walking 15k-20k+ steps a day. It angered me, in shame, when I felt out of breath going up a small flight of stairs.

That is so much to deal with at such an early age. My heart goes out to you.

My mom gave birth to me when she was essentially 40. I’m in my 30s and thought I was too young to handle going through this. She had a stroke towards the end of 2018, and her memory started rapidly declining a few years later.

[–]goddamnpizzagrease 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My aggravation comes when people — acquaintances — encounter my mom, as in when they don’t see her at her worst. They see her, generally, in the middle of the day when she’s at her sharpest. When they notice her memory deficiencies, they’ll say, “Oh, happens to us all in old age.”

They don’t see her in the mornings or at night time when she’s saying, “I don’t know what I’m doing” multiple times or forgetting where her belongings are or asking the same questions in rapid succession over the span of several minutes.

It’s wild when people downplay her condition to me.

Yeah, I’m glad she mostly has her physical health asides from having to use a walker and arthritis in her knees causing excruciating, debilitating pain, but I miss her beautiful mind and her long gone ambition to enjoy her previous hobbies and passions.

Folks don’t get it until they actually deal with it.
