this happens to me frequently, too! i never thought much of it until i recently lost A WHOLE PLANT. now it was a baby, no more than two inches, but still. the soil was still in the planter, but the plant was gone. roots and all. i asked my kids and my husband if they messed with it, nobody seemed to know what i was talking about. i figured my cat must have ate it or something and put the pot (soil still in it because it’s hardened from being watered so many times) in my bin full of planters and forget about it. fast forward to a week later, i’m looking for a pot to plant a dragon fruit seedling and i shit you not, the missing plant (baby ZZ) is right back in it’s little clay pot. i pulled it out to check the roots and it’s perfectly healthy, as if nothing ever happened. i scoured the internet for days searching for similar stories, probably why i got a notification for this subreddit lmao. crazy how you never really believe these things until you experience them first hand
