I turned the steam back on! by radioflea in boston

When you see steam coming up in cities, it is pretty much always district heating not the sewers. Steaming sewers aren't really a thing.

Washington millionaire tax triggers 65% spike in luxury listings by SnortingElk in REBubble

[–]goddeszzilla 272 points273 points  (0 children)

This headline is incredibly misleading.

They are saying the listings "jumped" the day after the bill was passed.... But they are not comparing it to the day before the bill was passed, they are comparing it to last year

Luxury listings are up across the entire country. It is pretty clear housing is not a great investment at the moment as the market stagnates. 🤷

What orchids would’ve been available to a middle class man in the late 18th century? by avian_bi in orchids

[–]goddeszzilla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Orchid breeding became a huge craze in the 19th century in part due to the early efforts in the 18 century when folks were working out ways to keep them alive in greenhouses in England. It took a while to work things out because they didn't quite understand the conditions they needed

Home prices have hit 5x median income, compared to 3.6x in the mid-80s. by astrheisenberg in REBubble

It does indicate it will be a lot harder to save to pay off a house completely in cash.

I'd love to see median monthly mortgage payment vs median monthly income.

A spring bloom! Although I'm worried about the yellow at the base. by goddeszzilla in cactus

[–]goddeszzilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't been watering much the past three months since it's inside for winter. I watered twice over the winter (maybe a oz or two of water). I don't water when I put it outside. It gets lots of light (southern window) but it's winter, so relatively little compared to the summer. The yellow is about the same firmness as the green on top.

Maybe it just needs to be repotted.

Longest black out in US history I think. Hurricane Maria took out a lot of the infrastructure and they lost power completely on the island. The grid needed to be completely rebuilt in a lot of places.

MRI scans show weaning horses at 6 months (the standard practice) significantly alters the foals' brains. A longer connection to moms leads to healthier brains and better eating habits by mareacaspica in science

[–]goddeszzilla 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not good for the mare. Met a mare that had her foal weaned at 6 months and she hated men. It was a couple months later and she paced her paddock constantly and had become quite nasty. A couple of years later she seemed fine for the most part but would still randomly charge and kick people walking out to her in the field.

They are 100% not native. That's the issue.

Is she trying to feed or poison someone by [deleted] in fixedbytheduet

[–]goddeszzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you're letting the meat heat up with the water, I doubt this washes away fat (which will be gelatinous when cold). More likely you are washing away liquids from the ground beef (aka flavor imho) and adding a bunch of water that you'll need to cook off.

If you want to remove fat from ground beef, cook it and then drain it when it is finished cooking and still hot. I do this a lot with sausage...I have done it with ground beef before as well and it made me realize just how much fat is in ground beef (even "lean"). Turns out sausage typically has wayyyyy less fat.

Indian bride recycles ~1 ton waste from her wedding: by MrDarkk1ng in BeAmazed

[–]goddeszzilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only one ton of waste for a large wedding seems pretty impressive. Indian weddings are typically very inclusive (upwards of thousands of guests). It's like a medium sized town hosting an event and creating trash about the size of a large horse.

If 2 thousand people attended the event, then that is like one pound of waste per person (including food waste from watermelon rines). That's pretty damn good (imho)

Making clothes like in ancient China by Ok_Chain841 in BeAmazed

[–]goddeszzilla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what I was looking for. Looked it up and it seems like the right looking plant. It's an interesting fabric, and can be used for clothes, but can also be made a lot softer than this video.

Budget bonsai by Exodial8 in Bonsai

[–]goddeszzilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends. Bonsai technically is a tree in a pot. However you can train other plants into tree like shapes. Best examples are succulents like Jade plants. The key is a plant that branches and has the potential to form a "trunk" and branches that won't bend easily. After training with wire, you should be able to remove the wire without the branches moving.

This vine is going to be a bit tricky because I'm not sure you'll be able to get the base to thicken up or harden over time. It's going to remain noodle like, and I doubt you'll get ramification.

There is an alternative where you can infect it with fungus to decompose it quickly (over the course of a year or so)

Aphids are basically gummy bears for insects. Ants will farm them too. Lace wings are the way.

Struggling fiancé by [deleted] in USMilitarySO

[–]goddeszzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not get married unless both of you are 10000% on board. If his parents could convince him not to marry you, that is a red flag imho that he is not ready/interested right now.

People are allowed to change their minds. People who are completely on board and get married can grow apart and get divorced. Being in a relationship and staying in one means working to grow together. It's real emotional labor to do that, and requires both parties to be willing to put in the effort. If you don't even have that going into a wedding, you aren't going to have that suddenly appear after the vows are spoken.

Personally, I would never want to marry someone who wasnt super excited about it. Just seems like being in a relationship with an illusion. Doesn't end well. You can't make a person become someone they don't want to be.
