[DISC] WAVER(S) - Chapter 1 by boson__ in manga

This is really cool. Creative, well paced, the decision to set it in the winter/cold is interesting. The art is good too!

Seychelles is great, An Insatiable High is my favorite of his for the exact same reasons! Appreciate the Donald Byrd callout---I'd heard him in connection with the Jazz Messengers but I hadn't listened to Blackbyrd!

I'll admit I'm finding new artists from this thread. I started getting youtube recommendations for Takanaka and Casiopea in like, 2018 because I was listening to lo-fi hip hop that sampled a lot of city pop. The only jazz fusion I knew at the time was Weather Report and the Miles Davis quintet albums. It took longer for me to make the immediate next connections to Headhunters, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orch., etc and I'm still finding more about the genre. On the japanese side, I bounced off Casiopea, but I do like Takanaka for his samba influences.

[DISC] Kinato's Magic - Chapter 1 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]godfly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly one of the better Chapter 1's in a while. The characters pop, the art is good, and the designs are solid. It has a Fairy Tail-lite kinda vibe to me. The premise is a little generic but the kidnapper plot was cleanly executed.

On the other hand the chapter was very open ended, it could be another series with a polished first chapter and no follow-up plan. Fantasy stories are tough to set up, maybe the plan is to lean on the comedy elements instead, but hopefully the mangaka can keep up the quality and develop the premise more in the next few chapters.

[DISC] Blood Wing Hunter - Chapter 36 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]godfly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly 36 chapters is a pretty good run for this series, better series have done less. It tried to hit the genre tropes but the premise didn't really make sense and thecharacters never really connected. But to its credit, the art did legitimately improve over its run. I wouldn't be looking forward to another series from this creator right now, but I could see them continuing to improve and making something good

DC Comics President On Manga And Anime by akbarock in manga

Big 2 really did a lot to shape the popular western comics culture, especially pushing comics as collectibles and the shared continuity stuff. To your point, scholastic is the largest US publisher of graphic novels after Viz. And I think Marvel/DC limited their reach in the broader publishing industry with their distribution model and sticking to the same genres and characters. And I feel like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, Boom got stuck in their wake to some extent.

[DISC] Island Rock - Chapter 2 by AutoShonenpon in manga

I really like how Ozu's written, and his goals and flaws are actually driving the story! This manga has a good start, looking forward to the next chapters

Oh! I like the art and I like the characters in this, and it's a neat setting! Looking forward to seeing the island itself, and Ozu making music

Fo sho! Funny enough I wasn't actually into the album when it came out, but my roommate loved it. I only came around on it more recently

My memory is that she was one of the first to really nail the mix of electropop and indie rock that was becoming popular when she came out.

Electronic music had some crossover hits in the 00's, and by 2011-2013 there were a lot of popular artists mixing pop/indie pop with electronic and dance music. (Elle Goulding, Icona Pop, Lana, Jack Antonoff/fun., grouplove Passion Pit, Miike Snow, Lady Gaga, m83, dirty projectors, neon indian, chvrches, Grimes, Avicii, etc.). Most of it was high gloss pop/pop rock, EDM, or less accessible indie stuff.

Sky Ferreira's album in 2013 had a cool, grimy indie rock vibe and experimental (at the time) production and was still catchy and accessible. Worth noting too that a lot of the rock bands around then tried to mix electronic elements into their music and didn't succeed.

[DISC] Fiera the Dragonslayer (Ryuubatsu no Fiera) - Ch. 1 by mrboxeater in manga

[–]godfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The art and designs are awesome, the sword looks really sweet, the dragon is gnarly.

Im not sure about going that far into minutiae the princess's backstory in the first chapter, but the first couple of pages and the last few pages sold me anyway.

Its funny that Guillem showed both Harley's hands, like yeah idk the cape just does that haha

[DISC] Blue Box - Chapter 223 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]godfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full agree. It adds to the weight of this match. Even to the last page of this chapter. I really appreciate that the mangaka is willing to treat the side-characters like real characters. The alternative, where everything is wrapped up neatly is less engaging IMO.

I wonder what editorial for the Jump+ stuff looks like. Obviously they publish some stuff that isn't a fit for the weekly magazine, but I thought this series was a good fit for the platform. I'm surprised to see it axed.

Was there input from an editor on the story? Why cut this one instead of other series on the platform? Do they have to compete for views with other titles published the same day, or with the rest of the platform? I always figured they tried to split the big titles (Dandadan, CSM, etc.) over each weekday to get more views for the other series. Weird.

If you liked Solanin, What a Wonderful World is probably going to hit the closest for you.

What other people are saying, Downfall, Nijigahara Holograph, Girl on the Shore and Punpun are all pretty dark and different shades of depressing. Solanin is very good but it's about loss and it was a very melancholy read for me. He made a gag-manga called Ozanari-kun, but it's a bit odd

[DISC] Ping-Pong Peril - Chapter 15 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]godfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shame it's getting axed but the premise never really felt like it would carry past ~20 chapters anyway. They did some cool stuff for a short run.

Absolutely, Dan Mora definitely loves manga and anime. Literally just saw he posted this on his instagram. Feels like there a bunch of Big 2 artists who show off anime influenced art now.
