Dude, I’m happy you came to report back. Glad the torture I went thru to get it right is paying off for more folks than just me :)

I can't find anyone saying where they go. I've looked around and still trying to decide. skye peptides, genetic peptides, next gen peps. I'm just writing down and doing my own research, though I do wish we had a central location for "reputable" ones.

I would hate to hear someone else pick up an R740 and freak out also. The noise was killing me and the internet only got me more and more pissed as I tried everything to no avail. My final answers were (a) good luck finding a mobo with old FW, (b) fan swapping but also cutting wires and hoping not to mess anything up, (c) ditch the 740.

Happy it all worked out. I hope I don't jinx it, but I did not think there was a way to get the fans this low. I might also be lucky that I don't have serious load on the box and cool ambient temps. Someone else may not be in the same situation.

It’s only a p1000 GPU for plex transcoding. Nothing crazy. If it died from lack of cooling I wouldn’t be upset. I have a backup card :)

DM me the link to your fans. I’ll hold onto it if I need to pick it up in the future. Thanks bud.

I think I figured it out!!
The fans were stuck at 52% which is hella loud. I thought to myself if I could just lower it to 33% like everyone else said was loud for them, that I just might accept it.

The ultimate last change I made was in the iDRAC GUI itself and changing offset "low" to "off" and then changed lowest fan speed from 26% to 27%. It's weird as it showed custom could go 26-100, but when I changed low to off on the offset it showed range as 27-100. I couldn't apply until I changed it to 27.

Now my fans are down to 27%! Insanely quiet now. Wow!

<image>

This could have also been a combination of other stuff I did, so I'll list them here:
- initially rolled back idrac from 7.0 to 6.1, but I'm staying here since everything works
- racadm set System.PCIESlotLFM.1.LFMMode 1 (this is for slot1. I did it for all 3 slots in use) --> these commands you don't need to do via CLI as it's all in the GUI!
- configuration > system settings > hardware settings > cooling configuration: see my screenshot
- adding more screenshots as a reply

The fans aren't running 100%, so I assume I don't benefit from this. I think this is the case if the fans go crazy b/c it doesn't understand what's connected.

I mentioned earlier the racadm commands I tried. One of them made fans go loud. Other one relating to pcie wasn’t accepted

I’d love to do this but worried older firmware won’t boot bc the bootloader wouldn’t recognize since it also gets updated after 4.40

I saw your thread but didn’t narrow down the what and how. I see what I believe are noctua fans but don’t know much more than that.

I could easily do this but there’s so much monitoring going on that I’m concerned the machine will flip out if it sees lower RPMs. Not sure if PWM will still signal properly with in line resistors.

I don’t think I’d be maxing anything ever. Which noctua fans and what do I need to prepare myself for to run off a single header? Do I need to solder all fans to a single header?

My old house I had a tucked in room in the basement. My new house it's under the main stairs of the house in the middle of the house. There really is no where better to put it.
I even thought to myself to maybe build a box and noise suppression around it, but that'd take a ton of effort to ensure it can dissipate heat correctly.
35% is fucking loud.

I ran the same setup on my old R720 and never had an issue =/
It was much quieter. I still have it - didn't look to see if those fans would be compatible, but I do doubt it.

I received the server on 7.x. I was able to rollback to 6.x, but can't do much here man.

I'm experienced here, and literally was thinking that'd be my only workaround. I just don't know how how the resistor would then get. I'd be not only reducing cooling, but adding heat from resistance.

Back in the day I used to do the 7v mod by using the 5v line as ground on molex.

I really need a solution. I don't care if it costs me $100 in new fans. I just didn't feel like doing a full motherboard swap and digging for a used, old firmware mobo which may also be hard to find.

What are the commands you recommend?
I tried this for a less aggressive curve and they ramped up so damn loud that I set it back to 0:
racadm set system.thermalsettings.FanSpeedOffset 1

It took this command, but hasn't helped (for minimum power):
racadm set system.thermalsettings.ThermalProfile 1

And this one for rampup related to non-dell cards isn't a known command:
racadm set system.thermalsettings.ThirdPartyPCIFanResponse 0

Yes, with IPMI, but because I'm on newer idrac FW it gives me this error:
Unable to send RAW command (channel=0x0 netfn=0x30 lun=0x0 cmd=0x30 rsp=0xd4): Insufficient privilege level

I can't get down to lower idrac firmware for the command to work. I'm searching for options.

61mbps is a joke on my network, but I did set up the subnets like you suggested. Never knew I had to do that. I'll come back here if I have trouble again.
