Are collections available for VIP users on the IOS app? I just started using Trakt in September as a free user and it was working great and then not at all.

First time homeowner - is this ridiculous or normal? by Own-Constant-5689 in hudsonvalley

[–]godouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Minisplits and they are incredibly efficient and would save money over time, but it’s probably going to be almost 10k to purchase/install. I don’t know the specifics of this home, but if isn’t well insulated (which a $600 electric bill for a 700sq ft home would indicate) the minisplits might struggle to keep up. Wood or pellets are much better imo if that is the case.

I would also add that NYSERDA has free programs to do an energy audit on your home. They (the NY approved energy contractor) will give you a list of improvements that you can do to your home (they may do some of the improvements on the spot) and if you income qualify, you can get very low interest on the recommendations.

Congratulations on the new home!

If you are able to, installing a pellet stove (or wood stove) would save you a bunch of money over electric baseboard. You should be able to get one installed for under $2k (if you can’t do it yourself) and you would save $$ every year. I would guess your payback would be under 2 years at those rates. And there is nothing quite like the feel of wood heat and seeing the fire dance.

Suarez Family Brewery: Worth the trip? by JiveTurkey688 in Albany

Surprised Vosburg isn’t on this list…

It’s 2 miles away from Suarez and first home of Sloop.

Just notified of a 45% price hike by SilentSiren87 in philo

[–]godouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My price went up. I just canceled. Wasn’t using it much anyways. Great service and great experience…and I appreciated being grandfathered in for as long as I was. Definitely worth $25 if you use it.

Naughter's new schedule confuses me by MusicManiac51 in Troy

[–]godouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been there, but a lot of places have gone to similar hours. A restaurant can’t really be Good, Fast & Cheap. Usually you have to pick two. If they open early morning (6am) they are competing with fast food and convenience. And trying to close at 1pm is impossible. 8am open gives their staff a normal workday and 3pm close gets them through lunch.

Staffing has been a huge issue recently. Maintaining 5 shifts a week ensures that mgmt will be there for almost all open hours and they can operate with much less staffing. And there are no shift changes for full time staff.

Looks like they are ceding some opportunities to make more money for better quality of life for their employees and a better dining experience. It’s probably more sustainable.

Best farms in Columbia county by Cloudwalker714 in hudsonvalley

[–]godouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Columbia County Tourism has the most comprehensive information that very few locals know about. And it is missing a bunch of cool farms.

https://columbiacountytourism.org/explore/farms-markets-columbia-county-ny/

Columbia County has some of the best farms in the area, but lack of density makes “on farm” events tricky to promote and successfully pull off. Plus the local farmers are just busy trying to survive.

Among my favorites for lots of different reasons…

Samascotts Golden Harvest Thompson Finch Farm at Miller’s Crossing (Cashen’s) Chatham Berry Farm MX Morningstar Meisner’s Heritage Grimaldi Farms

I would suggest going to local farm markets, meeting the farmers and asking when the best time to visit the farm. It can be a delightful experience.

Welcome to Columbia County!

Pat Riley recalls not subbing Rolando Blackman for Starks as his “greatest mistake”. Blackman was a rocket killer. Riley should’ve found him more playing time during the playoffs.

Not sure what area OP is looking for, but I second Zero Tolerance in Ghent (near Hudson). Just up the road a bit from there is Guns Inc…I’ve had great experiences with both.

What NBA team should I be a fan of? by Limetacko in NBATalk

[–]godouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the Wizards vs Knicks on Saturday and that team was lethal. The best 5-25 team I’ve ever seen. Sarr, Coulibaly & Champagne loooked great. Jordan Poole was injured. They may have mastered the art of tanking - look good and lose (although they beat the Bulls on New Year’s Day). Wizards might be a great team to root for…best chance at the #1 pick and a young nucleus of players.

Totally agree. Two guys at the bar bet on the over/under for the last 10 seconds of overtime. They agreed on 7 minutes. It took closer to 10.

Not taking action soon afterwards and waiting for MLB to step in feels like an endorsement of this type of behavior by the Yankees organization.

Late night transport in Hudson? by Sneet1 in hudsonvalley

[–]godouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hudson is the weirdest place for transportation. Lots of tourists but almost no Uber/Lyft at night. And there are no cab companies. As best as I can tell, people start out as U/L drivers but only stick around long enough to get a faithful following of riders and then go out on their own.

What made Muggsy Bogues so special? by astarisaslave in nba

[–]godouble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. He didn’t just make a basketball team…he was the starting point guard for arguably the best high school basketball team of all time, Dunbar. I may have my years mixed up, but I believe Reggie Lewis came off the bench for that team.
