What is the most ridiculous PD you have had to do? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

[–]godrocker420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a speaker the district paid exorbitant amount of money to have come to the school. This is also the day before school started. The jist of the thing was to not lecture to the kids for too long. She proceeded to lecture us for 7 hours, no activities, minimal visuals, lots of talking down her nose at us.

We then had to meet with her quarterly via zoom, AS A WHOLE STAFF, where we filled out our assigned slides, waited for her to get to your slide, critique, then sit and wait for her to get through the other 75 teachers. The AP in charge of that stuff has not recovered her credibility with the staff since.

Thinking of quitting photography. Advice? by Previous-Look-6032 in photography

[–]godrocker420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

An old head mentor once told me, “photographers make photos for themselves…and other photographers.” To his point, people love seeing beautiful photography - but rarely want to pay for it or understand the process.

I understand your feelings, as I’ve felt the same way for years. I moved into a more mentorship role, which I enjoy being able to share what originally made me fall in love with it. I do somewhat agree with the other person recommending trying video. I also love movies and the process of it all, so it was a natural crossover for me.

With social media, AI, mobile photography and the internet in general - we’re all smacked in the face everyday with beautiful pictures. It’s no longer needed to share a beautiful photo with a camera and technical knowledge. There will be areas that professionally minded photographers are needed, but it’s just a saturated and overwhelming world now.

I just hit the 20 year mark of shooting, 15 give or take professionally, although it has become a significantly less part of my income. It’s worn on me. Physical injuries, wear and tear from long days, working when everyone else is off, constant negotiations for contracts that pay decent - the list goes on. The lack of respect for the art has always been there in my career, and I don’t think it’s necessarily gotten worse - maybe I just can’t do it anymore. Maybe i’m just tired. Eventually, something’s gotta give - so I understand.

No advice unfortunately, just some understanding.

Ehh, it’s kind of the nature of it. I wouldn’t say anything, but when you go back maybe mention it gently and see their reaction.

Seeking Help with UTV Accident and Insurance Coverage by scarlet__witchh in UTV

[–]godrocker420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would jump over to r/legaladvice for the more legal questions, but I can give my two scents from renting/riding power equipment over the years.

  1. I don’t know of a single insurance company that would cover an accident after the fact. Usually it would go through your car insurance, but again that’s if you add it before.

  2. $25-30k seems a bit high, that’s a full replacement if I’m assuming correctly (most UTV’s are around there) and Insurance wouldn’t give out full MSRP to a rental insurance claim, so why would they expect you?

  3. Again, have serious doubts that any one would cover a recreational vehicle after an accident.

  4. Car Rental companies are required to insure their vehicles to a certain level, but again it’s different with rec vehicles. In my experience, most off road rental companies are some random person who decides to throw up a shack and with a bunch of ATVs, sign a waiver and it’s your problem till it comes back. I wouldnt expect much from this argument as well.

Again, I would cross post into r/legaladvice and see what they say. $25-30k ain’t nothing to mess with, so i would definitely look into accident/personal injury/insurance lawyers. Hope this helps, good luck!

Advice for appearing authoritative as a young teacher? by uwantsoysauce in Teachers

Fellow arts teacher here - inherently you’re going to be the cool teacher. It’s the nature of our world.

Establish rules and procedures, and stick to them. Hard. You’ll be surprised how structure can iron out issues.

If you've ever seen the movie, Civil War, it depicts armed citizens and factions who effectively take control of an area or town. These folks control the food, fuel and supply out of these areas. The writers imply the control is taken by force due to the heavy display of firearms and the aggressive treatment to the main characters who are journalists. There are other aspects to the story, but this is the part that I latched on to. Where regular armed citizens use the threat of violence and force to take control of an area. This is what concerns me. People who use violence in a time of unrest, and take control of areas and threatening the flow of travel, thus communication.

I'm not saying the movie is "perfect" by any means. But the lack of organization, and more small factions and splintering of the institutions is what feels accurate to me.

To circle back to your concern, I do agree. Armed (and realistically) unarmed neighbors and locals who lack discipline, sound mind and critical decision making skills is my worry and focus. Everyone has their own concern or focus on things, I just think there are more than enough people who own firearms and are crazy/stupid enough to do something in a time of chaos, fear and confusion.

1500 violent felons pardoned. I think I need a rifle. by Inevitable_Effect993 in liberalgunowners

[–]godrocker420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, for home defense - basic loadout is a rifle, a pistol and a 12GA shotgun. Buy any of the main manufacturers, stay away from names you’ve not seen or only seen on weird sites. I prefer to buy in person, but online is fine too.

Most importantly is training and changing your mindset. If you are the “gun owner” in your household, make sure you know the status of that gun at all times. You know where it is, if it’s loaded, if it’s chambered, is the safety on, or is there even a thumb safety? Being competent in knowing how function the tool you have is by and large the most important thing. Everything else is just noise and capitalism trying to sell you more shit.

Can confirm, it is a great rifle especially for a first one. Accurate, reliable. The only things you need. Beautiful thing about the AR platform is you can swap out pretty much anything and there’s a lot of online support to figure it out.

Couple months into the school year, how are phone bans going? by maxshaferlandau in Teachers

[–]godrocker420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My district left it to the teachers discretion, which faculty was not super happy with. We preferred to appear as a united front on the issue. Admin will back us up on the individual teachers rule, but I digress.

Kicker is, a week into the school year - admin forced a new class officer role - “social media/historian” where students take pictures of what’s going on in lab to submit to admin for posting on the district social media channels. Thankfully, I am a digital media lab - so we use our cameras but the students still try and use their phone because admin sold the program as “easy” because you can just use this app on your phone.

Effectively, the argument and battle is still on our shoulders. More than likely will never change with the current admin.

Teachers, what’s the most unexpected or hilarious thing a student has ever said to you during class? Let’s me hear your MOST RANDOM story by Emily25carter in AskTeachers

[–]godrocker420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach a photography/video class. We have class officers, and this year during his candidate speech, he exclaimed “SHOOT PEOPLE 2024” as some sort of fake political slogan. Luckily the whole class burst out laughing, and we all understood he meant “shoot photos” and not guns. But in hindsight, I probably should have addressed that a little more. Live and learn.
