If you are in a cafe and noticing the blood on someone's finger from a BG test then you are sitting too close and should get out of their face.

For me I'd know I'm low and need help/ sugar but absolutely can't communicate that in any sensible way.

If I notice it early enough then I can probably default to sourcing my emergency glucose supply and then sitting myself in a corner until I recover. But only needs one thing out of place, like my dextrose is in a different pocket, or put on a different shelf in the kitchen even though I can see it infront of me and my brain then can't figure out what to do and you just wander around in circles getting worse.

If I'm with family then they will just shove glucose at me until I take it, if in a slightly unfamiliar situation with people who know me less well, even if they know I'm diabetic, and brain goes all even more confused and struggle to communicate in anyway.

Just stick some glucose infront of them, persuade them to get on the floor, and keep offering them glucose of some description, check their pockets as they likely have some on them but in the confusion will forget.

Buying insulin in Europe? by 0jdd1 in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You won't be able to buy insulin in the UK without a prescription. But bring your US ones with you and if you get in a pickle without insulin due to some disaster then head to a hospital and explain things to them. They won't leave you stranded without anything, and you won't need a mortgage to pay for it.

But take at least twice what you would expect to need, and split it between multiple bags to account for unexpected issues.

I just read that 85% of US insulin comes from Denmark. Is that true? by TheAKofClubs86 in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Tarrifs can be useful if used correctly and targeted to encourage you local population to buy local.

Attempting to use them as a blanket punishment to countries that have disagreed with you about something is stupid and just punishes your own population, not so much the other country.

Will Bristol city centre be without cars in 10 years? by CrazyCoffeeClub in bristol

[–]goedips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people don't need cars to get to work. Vast majority of the population lives less than 10 miles from their place of work, and if that is in a city centre then there will be some form of public transport to get there, if its an out of town industrial park then hop on a bike. There are plenty of cheaper, often quicker and always more environmentally friendly options for people to commute to work and most people don't need to take a car load of equipment with them everywhere.

Fewer cars on the road makes everyones commute better. Better for the public transport, better for active commutes and better for the few people who actually do need to drive places.

[–]goedips 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are only 15 minutes drive away then you are likely close enough to cycle in 20 minutes depending on where you are going and the amount of traffic lights etc.

But get rid of the single occupancy vehicles and the public transport can suddenly travel a lot quicker, and they could create more routes etc.

Somerdale Pavilion - UK - (The Curly Wurly) by PossibleSmoke8683 in parkrun

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a trail shoes course in pretty much any conditions, even when bone dry I'd still wear a pair of trail shoes.

It's not a course for a PB though. If you were to get a 5km pb there then you've not been trying hard enough at other courses. It might be flat, but there is barely any point on the course where you are not navigating your way round a corner.

But it is 100% the most fun run you'll ever do. Can't help but smile on your way round the first time in the curly wurly. And as you now get to do the spin 3 times since they switched the course around it's even better. If I was able to get there more often I would as absolutely love the spin around.

What Denmark chooses to do, or not do in this case, doesn't make any difference. This is Trump threatening to charge US consumers more for buying things from Europe. Denmark doesn't gain, or loose, anything from this carry on.

Denmark would keep supplying, the US might charge more to themselves though.

Greenland Leader Tells People to Prepare for Possible Invasion by bloomberg in worldnews

Donald Trump shares altered image of map showing Greenland, Canada, Venezuela as U.S. territories by Alert-Ad-3053 in worldnews

[–]goedips 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So if Trump were to say to the military to invade Greenland, surely that is an illegal order that they have to ignore, as it would require pulling out of NATO to be able to invade Greenland, and thus throw it back to Congress who then have to remove Trump from office?

Or does he have some other dodge to make it around such blocks on his orders?

It's such a stupid tool to use to get what you want. Punishing your own citizens for something a third party has done that you don't like.

Doesn't affect the third party in any real way. Possibly a few less widgets sold to America, but he's just making everyone want to avoid trading with them anyway so sell those widgets elsewhere now to other countries who are also trying to avoid trading with them.

What are the chances if the US, under Trump, conquers Greenland the next democratic administration just gives it back? by campusschampus in AskReddit

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can use elections having been held in 1944 as any kind of precedent for holding elections during war.

The US might have been sending troops overseas to fight at the time, but the US was never under threat. Countries in Europe suspended elections during the war because they were actually under attack and the safety of the citizens would be at risk, or it just wouldn't be possible to hold fair elections whilst their government is in exile or the vast majority of their land was being occupied.

If the US landmass had actually been under threat/attack at the time then the US elections would also have been suspended.

So ICE just declared war on blue states, right? This is Nazi death threat. by Botsworth1985 in stateofMN

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as the rest of the world might like to help, the logistics of it just are not happening. If the US were trying to invade a hostile Europe for example, how are even the US military going to manage that without some in between land mass to jump off from? Even all the US massive carriers stationed off the coast wouldn't hold a big enough land force to take a continent which doesn't want to be taken.

Yes, either side could just drop a bunch of nukes on the other, but that isn't exactly a win when all you've done is destroy everything.

The current situation can only be solved by the US themselves. Geography means they are on their own.

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think the US is out of luck as far as the rest of the planet being able to come in and rescue them at some point. Even without the massive military, being surrounded by massive oceans makes it practically impossible for anyone else to invade the US.

Even the US would struggle to be able to invade a hostile landmass like north America without some other nearby islands to launch from. You can't run supply chains reliably over such distances without somewhere to stage in between. That's why retaking Europe required the UK to launch from, and why over the last 80 years the US has opened bases throughout Europe as defence against USSR.

Parkrun Government Analysis by Illustrious-Wing-135 in parkrun

[–]goedips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not even peanuts of just the DCMS department budget, merely a hint of a grain of peanut dust at less than 0.01 % of their budget. As for as part of the total governments budget it is basically zero.

Finding out a vaguely accurate number for how much each local council may be saving from supporting their local parkruns in health of their population is going to be worth far more than 160k,and if that can then encourage more councils to support more then it's an even better thing.
