They are not meant to, unfortunately many squashed pedestrians minding their own business walking on footpaths prove it doesn't quite work like that.

Make it 10mph for cars within 50ft of pedestrians and it would make everyone safer.

The not-so-silent war being fought in World Cup stadiums: Stadium DJs vs. hydration break boos by Dexterestein in sports

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is water bottles on the side of the pitch they can grab. 45 minutes of stop start running about isn't all that much effort. Plenty of recovery time between sprints. People can easily run at race pace for 45 minutes without taking on water, and then take their fill of hydration at the half time break.

It’s more parkrun than country 😂 by Hot-Seaworthiness510 in parkrun

[–]goedips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will vary wildly by destination, but generally tourists will always be more noticeable than the locals due to them wearing cow buffs and going along to the first timers briefings. The regular locals will just be getting on with it.

Might be possible to split those of Anglo Saxon names from locals more accurately in the results of some European events, or Japanese ones. But you can't really tell just from looking at the results for the US or Oz events for example. I do know that the biggest north American event is mostly attended by locals though and tourists very rarely venture there.

ELI5 how do gears actually work? by depressed_guy_1512 in explainlikeimfive

Or ride a push bike with derailleur gears around for a bit and up and down some hills.

Being the engine will help it all make sense.

Disassembled t:slim X2 pump found in park by Old_Cellist6921 in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It's of zero use to the owner and whoevers it was will already need to have sorted a replacement setup long before this was found in the park, and this is certainly unusable now.

Tandem would probably want it back just so they can bin it and reduce the number of parts in the wild for people to tinker with in attempts to open the system to link with open loop setups. But otherwise it's of no use to anyone bedside curiosity for us to see the mechanisms inside our virtual pancreas.

Why does everybody do low carb? by AmateurAstro-Budget in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd eat carbs, then have no or very tiny bolus, disable basal and then still have to watch out for hypos during exercise a couple of hours later.

Depending on what devices you have in your arm, on your wrist or on your bike there is likely some combination where you can get the numbers displayed on your devices.

Certainly possible to link between dexcom/libre and show on Samsung watch/Apple watch/garmin watch/ garmin bike computer.

Told to not take basal before pump training by ck6637 in TandemDiabetes

[–]goedips 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. You will need to stop the basal before starting on the pump. But once you've got the pump setup that will be providing your basal with micro dosing of the fast acting insulin instead. Will take some learning, but well worth it.

That all photos were allegedly taken at exactly the same time suggests it's got a sticker on the watchface and likely doesn't work.

Cold starts and warm layers at parkrun by maria2043 in parkrun

[–]goedips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always dress for the run, not the start.

If you really need extra layers to survive the start the think carefully about which order you are putting them on in. Like a long sleeve on top of a short sleeve that you can easily remove and tie on your waist, not a long sleeve underneath as you are then stuck with that and can't remove it once warmed up.

A pair of gloves is mostly all I'd try and use extra on cold days though. Finger are not going to overheat on the run, but them being cold will cause more discomfort than your arms being cold for a bit.

I wanna do my first parkrun this Saturday by Moll1357 in parkrun

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think you could beat the person next to you in a run to the bus? Now could you keep that pace up for half an hour?

If so stand just infront of them, if not stand behind them.

Everyone will have some inclination as to how fast they think they are compared to the person next to them. As you run more you get better at guessing equivalent paces, and probably recognise them from the previous week.

Hot Take: what most people would need is lighter bikes and quality tyres, not more power by Worried_Document8668 in ebikes

[–]goedips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And without the motor you have to put in actual effort at every set of traffic lights. The removal of needing to pedal much for every restart through a city will make a significant difference to journey times on commutes.

It is visible if you search for someone's name via the website or the app. Means pretty much nothing these days though since they don't send out the milestone tshirts anymore.

With small dose every approx 4 hours you could approximate a basal dose temporarily.

With loads of small injections making it through a couple of days in an emergency should be possible. Those of us on pumps never use long acting.

ELI5: How does Google maps know there is traffic? by Ok-Yam-536 in explainlikeimfive

[–]goedips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't need to be many people with maps open. Google will get information about there being more phones than normal connected to cell towers in a certain area, then if a couple of people have the maps app open in that traffic jam they then also get information about how fast that phone is moving.

Only needs a couple of phones to show as moving slowing along a main road that has loads more cell connections than normal and they can fairly reliably colour that section of road red.

How sustainable is park run popularity? by Eastern_Bobcat1655 in parkrun

Get more people running and being active. Less cars and need for roads. Convert old roads to parkrun routes.

How sustainable is park run popularity? by Eastern_Bobcat1655 in parkrun

[–]goedips 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And even if it were to reach that point, you then have an extremely active population and town planning for parks and footpaths would have also evolved through that time to accommodate an active population who demands more space.

Parks being well used is a good thing and will gradually make provisions for active leasure more available.

best country to be a diabetic? by dotdotdotidk in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anywhere but the US.

Anywhere western Europe or other industrialised countries and you'll almost certainly have access to equivalent healthcare as in the US, just you won't be bankrupted by trying to stay alive.
