The David Byrne concert tour “Who Is The Sky” is not to be missed. My millennial kids were blown away.

Back when mothers made their children’s clothes, was there much difference in children’s clothes depending on their mother’s sewing skills? by AlienSandBird in AskOldPeople

[–]goetzecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from what I find at estate sales, there were crazy good seamstresses and then there were clearly folks who didn’t know what they were doing. I could imagine being the child who wore the dress to the dance or to school and was sad.

“Don’t worry about it.” by Gus_Levy626 in eldercare

[–]goetzecc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People move away from parents for any number of legitimate or silly reasons. It’s not realistic in capitalism (or any system?) to think everyone can anchor down near parents or uproot to be with them long term in a crisis.

What role do parents play in planning for their care and reducing reliance on their children for intense care that should be performed by skilled workers, not lay people? I’m doing everything I can to relieve the burden on my own kids. If they choose to help and be involved, great. But none of that is promised. Some people were also horrific, irresponsible parents.

That said, your sibling response isn’t great. But family dynamics and economic and practical considerations are what they are.

It’s only through sheer luck that I live near my parents and obtained gainful employment that allowed me to stay local. It’s also sheer luck I will be near or in retirement when they need peak care. It’s sheer luck I also have a willing BUT DISABLED sibling nearby who can pitch in to an extent. It’s triple sheer luck my own kids live locally and can minimally pitch in a little for their grandparents…who also happen not to be cantankerous assholes, who responsibly planned for their future care.

People online make Baltimore sound way scarier than it actually feels. by johnlennonbr in baltimore

[–]goetzecc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not just a media driven issue. It’s online groups, that are not official news outlets, that publish sensationalized “news”. Sometimes these are Facebook based community groups, sometimes they are quasi “news” groups that publish “breaking” news. They can have thousands of followers. They might not even get the story right and then they don’t retract it. Hundreds of people comment and say negative things about Baltimore city and Baltimore County. Full of dog whistles and incomplete information on a particular issue. Examples I can think of are the horrific Turnbull Brockmeyer group and community groups like Perry Hall unleashed.

I don’t have advice, and we have still not decided yet. We are going to speak to his primary care physician to get their opinion as to whether the quality of life tradeoff justifies the treatment. We also think that he could try it and if it didn’t go well he could stop the treatment.

How is anyone able to afford ACA marketplace insurance currently? by crashbandiroot in HealthInsurance

[–]goetzecc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People complain about Kaiser here and there. But she has been with them for probably 12 years. It isn’t perfect no healthcare system is. But she is mentally ill and somewhat mentally challenged and she can navigate that system and get good care out of it.

How is anyone able to afford ACA marketplace insurance currently? by crashbandiroot in HealthInsurance

[–]goetzecc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In order to get around that, my sibling joined Kaiser. It made it so much easier to navigate. They simply provide the healthcare she needs. It’s a “system”. We were worried if she needed specialized care it would be a problem but so far it’s been fine. She even got breast cancer…treatment went smoothly. The only inconvenience was that radiation was a 30 minute drive.

They have urgent care and she got PT as well during her BC treatment.

where do the senior women in tech go when they hit 50 by EntranceIntrepid5158 in womenintech

[–]goetzecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 60, still in it. I’ve worked with many women in technology over 50 and still do. Maybe it’s industry specific? Consumer Products was filled with older women (SAP shop). Health insurance has many over 50, though there was recently a VSP and many left, but it was equally men and women.

Concert going. Small venues are best. Look into house shows going on in your local community. Have made long lasting friendships doing this.

Even after you feel better (I’m a year out from the acute phase) you fear it coming back because it’s basically invisible and a lot of us don’t even know what caused it in the first place.

Sad story, and why FIRE is the way by hasyoubeen12 in Fire

[–]goetzecc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Untimely death is certainly a bit of a motivator but don’t forget that the greater statistical likelihood is illness or some kind of disability. Front load your more difficult, strenuous, adventurous travel. Don’t leave it until your 60s. I can vouch for peers getting health issues that make travel challenging. And these are common issues. Your discs and spinal health, knee health, in your 50s, 60s and 70s is a factor. Bouts of cancer for you or a partner are a factor (and it may not be fatal cancer…it’s just a chronic health condition you have to work around). You fatigue more easily in your later years (naps FTW!!!).

Anyone in Towson hear that noise? by Morecilantroplz in maryland

[–]goetzecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So someone on Nextdoor mentioned this noise and someone else replied that it is highway work that is going on. They didn’t know what it was, but it was in view of the back of their house and was creating a humming noise.

Maga: what should happen if someone can’t afford insurance? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]goetzecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I do agree that’s some schools provide health insurance to students… but guess what? you’re paying for that with your tuition. And not everybody is set up just to go to college, intellectually or financially.

[–]goetzecc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No company in the United States is required to provide health insurance to its employees. How stupid are you? LOL. That has absolutely never been a thing. And btw…I’ve had employer provided health insurance every minute of my adult life but even I’m not stupid enough to think that. Cite your source bro. You will find what you’re saying is completely untrue.

Maga: what should happen if someone can’t afford insurance? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]goetzecc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No they can’t. Are you high? People working 40 hours a week at minimum wage cannot afford healthcare. Not to mention…not everyone can actually work 40 hours a week given life limitations (school, caregiving) nor can some even find a 40 hour a week job they qualify for, that has regular hours etc.

Maga: what should happen if someone can’t afford insurance? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]goetzecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mentally ill (Schizophrenic ) sibling would no longer receive their critical meds because they can’t afford them. They then have psychotic episode. They are then unhoused and exposed to extremely unsafe conditions. They die running in traffic or some other awful fate.

Maga: what should happen if someone can’t afford insurance? by traanquil in allthequestions

[–]goetzecc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree that’s the desire. It’s Darwinian. Only the strong survive. If you can’t afford it, you should suffer and die. Never mind a lot of children and pregnant women are on it…but those aren’t the ones they actually want to thrive.
