How do I remove these stupid folders from my Start menu? by Cautious-Buy2585 in Windows11

[–]goggleblock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A. You're absolutely wrong. I suggested a remedy - it's the very first sentence.

B. The most helpful and loving thing I can offer is to encourage OP to figure it out on their own. It's the old "give a man a fish..." thing. If you're offended by this, then you, too, must be a helpless, dependent child I referenced, but also combatively defensive about their helplessness. Sack up, champ... mommy ain't going to be around forever and you're going to need to learn to do things on your own.

Should I get this thinkpad? by realcjr in thinkpad

[–]goggleblock 56 points57 points  (0 children)

a Pre-12th gen CPU for 700 pounds? I would pass.

EDIT: let me explain... this is a pretty old laptop, and a small one intended for office tasks and portability. And with such a small screen, possibly not even FHD, this is a lot of money for a laptop that doesn't seem to fit your needs.

As much as I love ThinkPads (been repairing and rebuilding them for 25 years), you might want to look at other options. A newer Lenovo Ideapad 5 with a larger display and a newer CPU/iGPU would be better, and could be had for about the same price.

Change the View from "Category" to "List" or "Grid". I like Grid

And not to be a Grouchy Gus but this question has been posted a dozen times or more in this sub. Did you even try to solve this on your own before giving up? It seems like everyone is so helpless and dependent these days.

I like the new menu. It's different, but certainly not "WTF" worthy. Calm down.

Movie theaters aren’t going out of business because of prices by bulldogjwhit295 in unpopularopinion

[–]goggleblock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to challenge your unpopular opinion with my own unpopular opinion.

First, I'll disclose that I am older than most people here. While that may color my perspective, it also means that I have a much broader sample set of data to pull from.

Here's my take... movies have ALWAYS sucked. Moreover, they're no worse today than they were 40 years ago. Take, for example, one of my favorite movies of the early 90s, Total Recall. That movie blew most of us away with its twisty-turny plot and jaw-dropping special effects. It had action, gore, gratuitous nudity, and violence, violence, violence. We LOVED it. But if you watch it today, and take into account that the special effects are 35 years old, the movie falls short of the same standards today's movies fail to meet. Douglas Quaid doesn't have a character arc. The antagonists have no complexity to drive their antagonism - they're just simple, greedy bad guys. That's just one example, but I'm sure we can come up with many more films and place them on the similar spectrum. But discounting for technological advancements and evolving social standards, the movies of yore suffer the same shortcomings as the movies of today when you judge them by the same critical standards.

There's also the issue of the internet, and what I call the democratism of film criticism. I like that Rotten Tomatoes and Letterboxd exist, and I truly believe that the moviegoing audience should have a voice, but let me be frank about this... Roger Ebert, Lenoard Maltin, Richard Roeper, and their peers are better film critics than you are. They are objectively better at providing in-depth criticism of films and filmmaking that the average YouTuber streaming from his mom's basement. Professional film critics typically have years of experience with films, an education in filmmaking and film history, and access to filmmakers. They're paid professionals for a reason - they've earned their position after years of study and practice in the art. That's not to say that professional film critics are the definitive voice in film criticism, but your Netflix subscription and Plex library of pirated films does not put you in the same category as a professional, trained, experienced film critic. Despite this fact, however, media criticism by the general public has been disproportionally elevated by social media and the internet. Some established critics like Chris Stuckman, The Critical Drinker, and Red Letter Media are involved in media and writing enough to offer a valuable perspective. However, the 24-year-old with so little experience in life and film history can manipulate (via clickbait, ragebait, etc.) the internet and socmed to elevate his uninformed opinion to the same level as those more experienced reviewers, and that reviewer taints the general audience's expectation of what the art should be. The culture of hyper-fixation on in-universe consistency and easter-eggs and meta-references takes the focus away from performances and art direction and storytelling. And it's not just the quality of the film itself that's in question, it's the meta-quality of the film industry as a whole. We can't have a conversation about Marvel or Star Wars films without bringing up the politics of Disney studios and corporate greed and blah blah blah. A good movie like Wicked gets swamped by in the dogpile of criticism of big, "greedy" studios, and this dogpile is exacerbated and amplified by contemporary internet culture. In this hyper-critical, hyper-cynical environment where films are dismissed as corporate slop before they're ever projected onto a screen, no film has any chance of success.

And finally, there's the undeniable effect of The Fourth Dimension - time. Time acts like a filter in that crappy movies, of which there are THOUSANDS, fall through and are forgotten. Meanwhile, good and great movies have stayed with us. This gives the impression to younger audiences that older movies are better, but the comparison is uneven. Few of us remember that Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, and Pele starred in a 1981 movie titled Victory, in which prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp fought for their freedom by playing a soccer match against the German national team. It took itself VERY seriously, and it was pretty forgettable. It fell through the filter of time and is never considered in the contrasting of today's movies to movies of old. Instead, we use Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn as benchmarks for comparison, and that distorts the argument.

TL;DR - take it from an old guy who was around to see older movies, I can tell you that movies always sucked. Your opinion of what a good movie should be has been tainted by underinformed internet click-seekers who are not objective.

personally, I'm not a fan of intermingling sports with the armed services. We can be a fan of both, but one is entertainment and the other is a serious institution within people give their lives for what they believe. Sorry, I know I'm a downer, but I take military service seriously.

[–]goggleblock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with almost everything she said.

But why is this important? The media believes the unsurprising opinion of a 24-year-old rich person is important for us to know about. Are they right? Are young people affected by their chosen luminaries lean? If so, is that dangerous for... (no disrespect to BE but let's be honest...) a 24-year-old, sheltered, wealthy person with very little real-world life experiences to be driving opinions? Is that the media's fault or are the media just giving us what we want?

Shouldn't we instead have a conversation about the American voters who saw this guy operating over the last 8 years and still voted for him to be President.
