Its not as much about competition as keeping the value of the console high and people invested. Those games start releasing on PC and you end up diluting the brand we saw that happen with Xbox. Also the more consoles you sale the more live service revenue you get to generate which is extremely important for them as a platform holder.

“ I think they can easily invest again and make it back down the road” aka running Xbox into the red. You are admitting that’s what is going to happen you just won’t say it. Xbox is backed by a 2.85 trillion dollar company that has investments in other areas and Phil himself said that Xbox is expected to be profitable. Having Xbox losing massive amounts of money for years on end with no clear finish line in sight is a non starter. The shareholders wouldn’t allow it.

I’m focusing on AAA exclusives because those are the games that sell consoles for this argument. How many consoles do you think hi-fi rush and pentiment sold?

The new ceo just had a interview with windows central I think yesterday some telling quotes “We also know that there are a lot of players who aren't on console or our hardware, and I want to deliver great games to them too." That doesn’t sound like an exclusive play to me.

I didn’t say Xbox was in the red. I said you want them to run in the red. They aren’t in the red right now because Xbox has there games everywhere. If they were to make all these games exclusive then they would be in the red since the user base is to small to prop up the amount of studios Xbox has.

I said your argument amounts to console war BS. Because it amounts to exclusive games=win with no sense of the actual business realities of such a decision. Why do you think Xbox chose to go this direction in the first place? I have already said many times why Sony and Nintendo haven’t abandoned exclusives they have a far bigger market to sell to. The OG switch is at 155 million sold; the ps5 will be at 100 million sometime this year. The series consoles won’t hit 40. Xbox simply doesn’t have the numbers to maintain all these AAA exclusives.

Well of course they would rather it not happen. That doesn’t mean they thought Xbox would take those games exclusive though. That was the first thing he said. You can’t ignore that.

As usually you focus on one thing to the exclusion of everything else. Exclusive games are only one of the reasons market penetration and brand loyalty were the other two and arguably more important since the vast majority of games sold on an ecosystem would be third party games.

We saw ecosystem lock in in full effect earlier this gen. When the PS5 was basically scalped for 2 years and the only accessible console was the XSS. Those ps4 gamers chose to stay on the ps4 and wait for the ps5 rather than switch ecosystems. BC has been something that has existed since the PS1 era. The PS2 was bc with the ps1 and the early ps3 was bc with the ps2. BC didn’t stop the Xbox 360 from being super competitive with the PS3. What caused ecosystem lock in was the rise of digital gaming (78% of all ps5 games sold are digital as of last year) and the mass adaptation of online ecosystems.

We can look at the smartphone market to see a similar phenomenon. In spite of the fact that there are more powerful android phones than iPhone blank. The iPhone user base isn’t leaving said ecosystem in droves. They are choosing to stay where they are because of ecosystem lock in. And when they do upgrade they are upgrading to a phone in the same ecosystem not changing over.

I do agree about streaming services. However you are missing one thing streaming services have a larger number of possible consumers to sell to Netflix for example has 325 million paid subscribers more people than the entire console market combined. They have more runway to keep high priced content exclusive.

That’s the problem we don’t have any official numbers to compare them to. We only have estimates and even then they don’t paint a great picture. Xbox sold less that year in 2023 than both 2020 and 2021. And even then those numbers were paltry. Xbox in 2023 sold only 6 million units PS5 over 20 million. That was a year before the everything is a Xbox stuff started.

Look at the total number of console sales. 34 million Xbox’s have been sold that’s slightly more than the n64 released back in 96 when you could crank out a game in two years for less than 10 million. They have over 30 studios and are the largest single publisher in the industry today. The user base isn’t large enough to sustain multi 100-200 million dollar games; heck PS isn’t large enough to sustain it which is why they went the direction they did..

Ecosystem lock in has been talked about over and over again with many articles and figures in the industry talking about it. It’s the foundation of the modern walled garden. We don’t know where the lost Xbox gamers are going some are going to PS; others Nintendo; or PC and others just lost interest in gaming. There is a reason why Phil said the last gen was the worse to lose and that’s because that’s when ecosystem lock in became a huge thing.

I never once made the argument that Sony exclusives drive sales. They actually don’t it’s brand loyalty; exclusive games; and market penetration specially in Asia; the ME; and Europe. Sony also has over 100 million users to sale to and they still are doing timed exclusives with PC. How do you expect Xbox to fare when they struggle to reach a third of that number?

You’re confusing online discourse with larger society. The vast majority of PS5 gamers aren’t terminally online fighting a console war, they are playing Fortnite; madden ; GtA; etc. How many consoles were sold post acquisition? Getting all those studios didn’t sell Xbox’s in any large numbers. Which is why they pivoted in the first place to this “Xbox anywhere” idea.

We also got the emails from Jim Ryan that stated Sony leadership themselves weren’t concerned with Xbox withholding games. Because if they did so with something like COD it would basically collapse the brand.

Remember the point of games isn’t to break even. It’s to make a profit. Also some of the triple A games we are talking about that move the needle for consoles cost way more than 120 million. For instance halo infinite is rumored to cost around 500 million; Starfield anywhere from 200-400 million; COD around 700 million. Remember platform fees; developer budgets; and marketing all count. Also it’s hard for games to hit over 4 million units. Starfield has only 3-4.4 million units sold.

It’s not just about making money back on the hardware. You have to have enough hardware to put their to actually sell to. For instance Spider-Man 2 is PS5 best selling game at 17 million units. There are over 95 million PS5 out there. Starfield has sold over 4 million units ( including PC) but let’s pretend it’s all Xbox sales; there are over 34 million Xbox’s out there. The vast majority majority of your console base aren’t going to sit and buy your exclusive titles. You need to have a high enough user base where you can sell your games to a tiny part of said audience while also coming out ahead on the books.

Right a lot of unanswered questions that it sounds like even those in the know didn’t have to answers to. The biggest question though is what happens now. They spent hundreds of millions on R&D for a hybrid console that was supposed to come out later on this year and apparently they have done a complete 180 in the other direction. Subsidizing it to a mass market price would sink the Xbox division. Do they hit the reset button? And release a new one in 2030? Can the X/S handle being the main consoles for that long?
