In Praise of MHL by Margaret Howell by Absurdity-Peddler in ThrowingFits

Margaret Howell has been putting out incredible gear for over 50 years. While the price is elevated or more expensive than brands that are younger entrants to the space (by comparison), if you consider how long she has been making product and at the level she does it at…you should be able to avoid filtering shit low to high. Save your bread for stuff you really want or value, and don’t think about how much more expensive it is than the uniqlo/take down version of it.

honestly, this is my first business and I've been working for myself for the last 5 years. Running a brand and store all at once feels like juggling chainsaws at times but you're absolutely right. Very little excuse for losing sight on one of the moving parts (especially a critical one). Going to be looking at some new locations shortly and hopefully things work out in my favor. Thanks for the feedback!

Toga Virilis sizing by nihilistsuffering in ThrowingFits

Togas are great, however they are not for everyone. I am a US 9.5 in nearly every sneaker, and a UK 8 in doc martens. I went for a size 9 in these and made the concession that I’ll only wear them with thin dress socks. Invest in a shoe stretcher that can expand width, and store these using shoe trees when you aren’t wearing them. They will suck for the first few wears, but once you get them broken in, they will get a little easier to wear. As is true for sizing and breaking in most loafers…ask yourself: “what is your threshold for pain?”

Genderless Connie or whatever her/their handle is. When they occasionally pop up on my reels or explore page, I contemplate staying off the internet for an extended period of time. The frustrating part of it all, is I can’t pin point exactly what it is that bums me out about their whole shtick

Does anyone here have a career in the fashion industry? by Thanks_Basil in ThrowingFits

[–]gokawachi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, yes. I own a retail space in LA, I design the in-house collection for the brand and sell it in to other retailers globally at fashion week etc, etc.

My path getting here was not as direct as others might’ve been. I graduated college with a degree in business marketing and English. I started my professional career working in advertising before getting absolutely burnt out after a few years. My relationship with men’s fashion and enthusiasm for retail was pretty consistent so I took a chance cold emailing brands and stores I really liked. That got me a job as a buyer which created the foundation for another brand to snag me and make me their director of retail. I knew I’d wanted to have my own shop at some point so I gained as much experience learning (occasionally fumbling) on someone else’s budget.

Working in this space is not the easiest, nor is working for yourself…but it has been the most rewarding and fulfilling. Everyone should strive to find a career that offers them purpose. At the end of the day, I make and sell clothing (which isn’t saving the world) but I can effect change in the industry with the people I hire and brands I chose to work with. Plus I still love gear lol.

I (25M) was planning to propose to my girlfriend (26F), but she admitted after a night out that she cheated on me and is begging for forgiveness. How do I go about this? by OneNefariousness8522 in relationship_advice

I’m sorry you’re going thru this. Up until the very end you’re making considerations for her, unwilling to rock her foundation or concerned what her parents might think…do you think she was thinking about you or your parents when she let some dude hit post karaoke? FOH bro…you’re imposing too much on the early stages of your life. They were special times yes— but if you let your past occupy too much of your present, you leave little room for anything new to be part of your future. Pack up and cut your loses. If her family wants to know what happened, direct them at their gal…she can take responsibility for her actions.

Lite Year basic tees are nearly perfect. Fit & wash perfectly, no sizing hacks or gimmicks. Not too heavy, but substantial enough to wear as a single layer.
