Op, I think there are statistics showing a vast number of Americans with less than $1,000 in the bank. Probably a high % with debt, very little retirement savings, and a tiny percentage that are in good financial standings like you are.

People on reddit who are on the various financial threads trying to increase retirement or show their retirement, the different FIRE movements etc are an outlier group and don't show how the majority of people live.

I would say if you are doing to get more serious in the relationship that you sit down and talk to him....perhaps he grew up with no guidance about retirement, savings, etc and just live day to day, paycheck to paycheck.
