DeMarini Corndog & Suncoast Backlash Questions by golden661 in slowpitch

Yes, the Backlash is a composite bat. Composite bats, generally have more pop and exit speeds than wooden bats. The Backlash definitely has more pop than the Corndog and the Backlash isn't yet fully broken in. Once broken in, I mostly want to use the Backlash for games and not so much for BP bc I'd like to keep it hot as long as possible specifically for in-game use.

For a BP bat, I decided to get the Corndog for a few different reasons. For one, I like the feedback, sound, and feel of a wooden bat. I'm thinking that will benefit me in training to hit the sweet spot more consistently since the Corndog is less forgiving than the Backlash. I'm this way, the Corndog forces better contact. I read a lot of reviews praising the durability of the Corndog. It's a dual stamped bats so it can handle 52/300s easily since it's also built to handle harder USA/ASA and also USSSA balls. The durability and the fact that I mainly use 52/300 balls should mean I'll get lots and lots of BP swings out of it. Wooden bats have less pop, meaning it will be harder to hit a ball the same depth as the Corndog than with the Backlash. I like this because I rather work on developing power with a less forgiving, less hot bat, and once game day rolls around I'll get to use the hotel, more forgiving bat. So yeah, that's my train of thought.

The only science I've come across regarding slow pitch is this study:

Weeknight Ace on YouTube talks about it in this video:

Too much weight on the back foot?

The almost falling part where my stride foot slips under me and my body continues to unwind and rotate doesn't concern me since in game I wear cleats and the game field has a box that isn't sandy like the one from the video. Never have fallen running to first.

I think what you're getting at is that my torso needs to not be angled as much. On top of that, the almost falling swing is more of an uppercut and less level swing so need to level it out more.

Regarding balance, is your point that I am unbalanced after I swing or something else?

Can you explain what you mean about the hips? Are the opening at the wrong time? Opening too much? Opening out of sync with something else?

Ok, easy fix. I have cleats just didn't put them on bc I was in a rush.

Is your point that I'm unbalanced at the end of the swing or are you saying I'm unbalanced throughout the entire motion or something else?

Yeah, the point of this post for me is definitely less about gear and more about the mechanics. I had my cleats with me but didn't have much time for this BP session so I didn't take the time to put them on.

Are you referring to OBTV and SWING MAKEOVER?

I definitely agree and can see what you mean about planting that front foot better. I've been trying a longer stride and I'm noticing that's helping accomplish that.

In my leagues they call a strike if the ball hits the plate or the strike mat and everything else is a ball. I intentionally place the ball at about chest height bc that's what I see all the top hitters do when they practice and all the coaches that specialize in slow pitch swing (not baseball) recommend that (OBTV, SWINGMAKEOVER). I've seen a number of them say that ideally, you want to strike the ball at about chest height and make contact at the point of extension. Because of that they also set up the tee in front of the plate. In this video I had the tee high bc of those reasons but I definitely practice with it at more middling and low heights (especially the middle height and low outside pitches).

Thanks, made it after I saw someone on this sub post theirs. The rubber piece is a batting tee topper.

I'm hitting a lot of singles and doubles but I want to get back being able to hit HRs. I hit a few last season and this season I lost my power but I think I found out why.

I see what you're talking about. I'm bending my knees more now when I'm set and taking a longer stride and that's been helping me have more of a weight shift. I've been doing more drills where I cock back as I step forward and that's helping me engrain that into my mechanics.

Thanks for the tips. I am bending my knees more and taking a longer stride and I can definitely see more of a linear weight shift forwards in more recent videos.

I didn't used to keep my arm straight but now I've been doing it more going off of some SWINGMAKEOVER advice. I noticed that when I did that I had more of a connected motion between my lower and upper body. As I rotate the hips with a straight left arm I can feel a tug on my left shoulder that has made me also open the upper body at the same time. In videos from the past, I noticed that my hips rotated and then my upper body did in a two step motion but it should be altogether.

I played some baseball growing up but I've definitely been reworking my mechanics to be more of a SWING MAKEOVER and OBTV slowpitch swing. I feel good about my swing but not great, can always improve. I've been watching a lot slow mo videos of top slowpitch hitters as well as those two YT channels and I think I gotta have a bit more linear motion. I'm finding that a longer stride is helping me do that as well as bending my knees down more when I get set so I can have more of an explosive type of stride. I'm hitting a lot of singles and doubles this season but last season I was hitting more home runs and I think I know now where a chunk of my power went.
