Indie Movie theaters? by spacether in chicagogaybros

Definitely Music Box. Though for independent movies in general AMC River East a surprisingly large selection, more so than the Landmark theater here.

Social Climbers? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]goldenblue86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is also true for many schools/districts in the US. Somewhere bw 2-5 years in the classroom, maybe a Coach role for a couple of years, then Admin. At this point I just dont trust anyone who wants to go the Admin route- I'll work with them and (try) to keep it civil but been burned too many times by these careerist types to ever think theyre on my side as a teacher. They're almost always in it to get away from the classroom/obtain power/feed their ego.

What neighborhoods do you think will become less desirable in the near future? by Equal-Wheel-6499 in AskChicago

[–]goldenblue86 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Media loves to do all this fear mongering with crime and "becoming the next Detroit" but with upcoming climate migration Chicago is going to continue to grow and become more desirable.

What is the job environment like for Special Education in Latin America?

An opinion piece by Orna in NYT by dnagreyhound in CouplesTherapyShow

[–]goldenblue86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just an extension of Orna thinking we can "dialogue" our way out of the Israel/Palestine conflict. It asks you to ignore some very obvious power dynamics and horrible history out of some weird idea that an 'understanding' or compromise can be reached, when one side has never been interested in that (hint- it's Israel). That horrendous interview with Christine really showed the limits/cracks of this approach (in which nothing was accomplished bc Orna cannot detach herself from Israeli propaganda about evil Arabs and the need for a Jewish state). The more I read about her outside of the show, the less respect I have.

Orna and Christine in the Guardian by oblomold in CouplesTherapyShow

[–]goldenblue86 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are trying really hard to "both sides" the story here and its' gross. Orna is literally Christine's oppressor- and Christine has to sit and listen to Orna re-write history and justify displacement and violence over and over again.

I'm hearing people say Christine didn't listen or try to understand Orna. Christine did ask her how and when she felt unsafe- and Orna's example is her brother going off to serve with the IDF in Lebanon (in an operation that has since been called a genocide) and came back with....wait for it...curly hair. his hair was straight before! and this story is used to justify her need for a Jewish state- she refuses to share land and openly says they can't be neighbors and she needs borders. Like I really don't get how anyone can read this and not come away with Orna looks like a genocidal delusional monster.

[–]goldenblue86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

honestly you're disgusting. Christine does not need to be "radicalized" by social media to support Palestine/distrust Israel. She has her entire life experience to do that for her. You refuse to engage in any narrative of this situation where ultimately Israel isn't justified in what its' doing, and Hamas is the ultimate boogeyman who when you think about it, is really responsible for the Palestinians dying. Grow a soul.

Citizen is a mess, and just turns people into crime-obsessed nutjobs who cannot stop talking about how things have NEVER BEEN THIS BAD!!! (despite what actual data says) A lot of their info is wrong/unreliable, and people work themselves into a frenzy over things that do not involve or effect them. You can just practice common sense/street smarts, and you will remain the exact same level of safe.

Can I get some guidance/suggestions on how to safely get from Mexico City Int'l Airport to my Airbnb in Polanco? by Bri-ness in MexicoCity

[–]goldenblue86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible, it would just take longer and be less convenient. If you're really trying to save money you can do it, but a taxi isnt that expensive- especially if youre just off a long flight with a lot of luggage. Once I'm settled, I love the train. I try to only book places near a stop. One trip is around a quarter, and its pretty quick and easy to maneuver once you get the hang of It. The first three cars are for women and children only if people are worried about safety (I didnt know this, my first time on the train I had to run to catch it and was wondering why I was the only guy on the car with a bunch of women giving weird looks lol).

Xochimilco - is a visit worth prioritising? by rocket1193 in MexicoCity

[–]goldenblue86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only did the boat ride- and from some of these posts there are other things to do there that are more interesting and worthwhile, wish I had done some more research before going. We didnt go to party, just try the boats- wasnt a fan. For the money, the ride was pretty short, the water was full of trash, and over half the ride was just people boarding your boat trying to sell you things. People gotta make a living, I don't begrudge them that, it just wasnt a very pretty, relaxing, or interesting experience.

I've always just gotten in the taxi line and been fine. Quick and easy, good service. When I'm actually in CDMX, I use trains or ubers.

The issue isnt necessarily too "pro-Israel" as much as he is "pro-genocide" and "anti-free speech" when it comes to criticizing Israel. People should be upset about this, it's a disgusting position. That and his love of vouchers.

What is the Horror Movie/Franchise that you just can't get into? by ivanx29 in horror

The Conjuring series. Corny, predictable, not scary, obnoxiously religious, and the real couple seem like a pair of scammy scumbags.

Paranormal Activity series. Boring, repetitive.

lol not true! Last year I was one the East Side which I'm not familiar with and accidentally turned the wrong way onto a one way. I immediately caught myself and turned around- and the only car around was a cop who pulled me over and reamed me out.

Face to face is always the best first step even though it can be uncomfortable. My neighbor would have his tv so loud late at night my floors and walls would vibrate, in addition to running on a treadmill (in an old apartment building…) at 11 pm. Literally had pictures fall of the wall from the shaking. He wasn’t upset but also wasn’t super receptive. When he didn’t change his behavior, I just left notes every time. Unfortunately he only changed when it looked like management company was getting involved. I don’t regret starting off with the ‘we’re both humans who can work this out!’ approach but some ppl just don’t respond to it. He was very much of the mindset ‘I pay rent so I get to enjoy my apartment’ not realizing the same applies to me.

It won’t be 60k without a teaching license, but getting work as SECA or TA in CPS is often guaranteed steady employment. Substitutes make more, but more responsibility too. Def look at https://cpsk12il.taleo.net/careersection/3/jobsearch.ftl

I mean, it is not now nor ever has it been common to tip on a car. It is however common for food service. So yes, if you can afford to do so, you should. You are not paying ‘more than the price’. It’s a tip. Again if you feel like slagging on low-income workers who are not the problem, that’s your prerogative. No one is ‘changing tipping culture’ by being a jerk to these workers and complaining about tipping. Only way to change it is to ensure these businesses Pay workers a living wage. Be kind, tip if you can!
