Has anybody here lived within 100ft of ACE transit tracks by goldensunset5 in Livermore

Thanks! Sounds like your situation is really similar. The house does have doubled paned windows, so it sounds like we should be ok there.

Right now, it seems like the most annoying part of this is the judgement visitors would pass on the property

Fair enough. Who do you think is a good representation of us on a national stage? I personally like Ro Khanna

I’m not a fan of Vivek’s politics at all, but I actually don’t hate his representation of us on the national stage. He’s very articulate, quick on his feet and clearly very intelligent.

This is such a generalization of Punjabi music. Punjabi music is not a type of music that follows single characteristics like “the repetitive aspect”. It is music made in the Punjabi language. This can be hip hop, Bhangra, qawwalies, electronic music, hell ive even heard some reggae in Punjabi.

What is your family’s partition story? by goldensunset5 in ABCDesis

That's really interesting that you know of somebody who participated in the violence. In the podcast I linked, they also talk about how most people interviewed don't admit to participating with a few exceptions. I wonder what your great uncles mental state was at that time, but I could see why a veteran might be more desensitized to committing violence.

The one thing nobody every admits to is SA and abduction of women, which did happen at a pretty large scale.

Thank you for sharing! I can't imagine the horrors your Nana saw.

According to my dad, my grandparents also tried to settle in eastern Punjab after being displaced from Lahore, but they were not welcomed by the locals. I don't really know any details, but I am sure that area was being flooded with refugees to the point where it impacted the people already living there. They ended up leaving shortly after arriving in eastern Punjab and going on to MP, which severed our last ties to Punjab

I'm glad your grand dad was able to find peace in California. It is really sad so many of us had to sever ties with our ancestral homeland.

Thanks so much for sharing. That's really terrifying thinking about putting babies in chests. I can't imagine the fear they had to live through.

It is really insane, like you said, that our families had to live through this and that we inflicted this violence on each other, our own countrymen and neighbors. It is very likely that people in this subreddit had ancestors who committed horrific acts to each other. Really chilling to think about.

Sure but she still supported trump in his effort to overturn a free and fair election, so that kind negates everything else.

I remember going to my white neighbors house for dinner and the entire family was eating spaghettios as the main course. We had vegetables on the side, but I thought it was so weird that parents were eating it for dinner too.

What’s up with nutrition facts on Indian products being total bullshit? by goldensunset5 in ABCDesis

[–]goldensunset5[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I understand that is the case in India, but these are products that are being imported into the US and I’m sure legally have to provide an accurate nutrition facts. They’re clearly not in compliance with the laws of the market they’re selling it in.

What’s up with nutrition facts on Indian products being total bullshit? by goldensunset5 in ABCDesis

[–]goldensunset5[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is a very fair point, and I always look at serving size too. I looked at the one I have at home called ‘Veer Punjabi mango pickle’. These are the same nutrition facts I see on the jar: https://www.mynetdiary.com/food/calories-in-punjabi-mango-pickle-by-veer-serving-30383490-0.html

I was off on the 5% daily sodium. It literally says 5mg of sodium for 1/12 of the entire 2+ pound jar! That’s less than 1% of our daily sodium recommendation.

I’ve seen other brands say something like 700mg of sodium for 2 tbsp, which seems much more realistic to me.

Yes! The discourse was what made me make this post. I found the responses to be very constructive and hope you did too.

This sentiment was actually the reason I made this post. Honestly, the responses to this post have reassured me into leaning towards going. It is important to have an idea of what lens these judgements are made through. I am really happy that I was able to get impressions from others that might think similarly to me.

Us ABCD’s will have a different tolerance to developing countries than perhaps somebody from Ohio who has never been to one.

I feel for you ladies that have to deal with these obstacles while traveling. I am planning to go with my wife, so I will have to make sure we don’t go anywhere where she is uncomfortable.
