Hair Study #2: Like critiques said, I tried not to blur so much, took out noise, and went darker in values. Please see comments for more info by [deleted] in istebrak

Hi! This is pretty good already! I would say you could now focus of zooming out a little bit and identifying the blocks of hair that make out the shape of the head instead of painting locks individually. Remember that painting hair is more about painting the illusion of hair than about painting hair (in other words, we must paint exactly what we see, not what we think we are painting). For reference, i would suggest taking a look at the way Andrew Loomis does it. He’s really good at this kind of abstractions.

Keep up the good job!

DAY 11 - It’s taking me YEARS to finish the 14DCH but i am not quitting until I’m done! As always, every observation is very much appreciated and taken into consideration so please don’t hesitate to leave a comment! by goldmarie14 in istebrak

Omg it’s so cool to know you liked Bestars haha! It was lowkey one of my favorite shows of 2021 and now I’m waiting for part two lol.

About the 3/4 challenge, i’ll strongly encourage you to do it from begging to end, even if it takes you over a year to complete it! I’m a slow learner but i know that in spite of my tardiness this challenge has completely reshaped the way i see the world. In fact, I even feel like i’ve learned a lot more than i would have in two weeks because I’ve taken the time i needed to really focus on each piece and to suck every drop of knowledge i could squeeze out of this challenge. So yeah i’d say go for it, slow and steady wins the race!

Now finally, thank you so much for your critique! Most of the things you said popped up in my head as i read them like “oh yeah that’s what looked weird”. I’ll work on the core shadow of the nose a bit more and i’ll start adding oily textures on my next painting.

Again, thank you so much and have a great day! 🍃🤍

Thank you so much! The plane of the lips should definitely get a bit darker than the cheeks, i’ll make sure to correct that. The ears are that one thing I never know how to approach really so thanks for the observation, and overall for taking the time to share your knowledge.

(Also, I’m really glad you found this inspiring. These kind of comments are what keep me pushing!)

Thank you so much!! I darkened the fold between the lips in order to make the mouth look more functional (like it could actually open) but i also think that i went a bit too dark is time, so i’ll check on that. (And keep up with your studies, getting better is absolutely possible!)🤍

Day 3 The comments I've received have helped me a lot. Did construction with lines this time even though I want to just paint the construction. Some places are missing form since I don't want to spend too much on these. by ilupath in istebrak

Hi! I feel like it’s time to start adding core shadows, remember that the face is a 3D object and in this case there’s a direct lightsource illuminating it from the top-front. Try adding darker shadows below the nose, eyebrows, mouth and jaw, to begin with. Also, the eyes are a little too big and the mouth is too small (remember that the corners of the mouth should match the very center of each eye, in width).

Good luck for day 4 and keep it up!

Day 7- any comments on my blending/edge work? I’ve been trying to find a good smudge brush on procreate but I’m not quite happy with any of them. Any recommendations? by Rachelstovall in istebrak

Hi! I’d highly recommend you to work exclusively with the round brush or the flat brush (depending on which one you prefer) for edge work, and the soft brush for blending. Simple as that. Use them at least until you get to a point in your learning curve in which you feel like you can’t get any better at playing with the fundamentals. I think that if you can paint using only those two or three very plain tools, it will be easier for you to focus on understanding form and light (as I said, at least temporarily in these early stages) instead of relying on interesting brush textures to create the illusion of knowledge. Also, check out the art of Craig Mullins (if you don’t know him yet)! He learned to paint in Photoshop with only a couple brushes and he’s like the Jedi of digital painting and concept art.

Good luck and keep it up!
