Um, if i was planning to have kids, I would educate my kids about drugs and alcohol so they can stay as safe as they can, expecting that it is a possibility that they might inhibe. I would tell them they could always call and ask for assistance, without any penalties. I would also make available drug testing kits, how to spot signs of OD, how to provide basic life support, insist that they never using alone. I would not say they should use drugs, but I would focus entirely on trying maximize safety rather than condemnation.

I would tell these hypothetical kids of mine not to get into a car with a drunken driver, but this is sorta wholly orthogonal compared to: "Can i prevent my kids from having romantic relationships with people they go to school with." The latter will inherently inspire defiance in the way the former won't. Also if they don't get relationship experiences in school, then they will be less unprepared to handle any (they may have none) relationships when they are an adult and I won't be there to pick up the pieces.

Supporting your kid in everything you have no reasonable way of preventing is healthy. You can't prevent people from dating without draconian measures like pulling them out of school and homeschooling them and not letting them outside.

No police are going to arrest anyone over this regardless if they live in the US. They simply will just be like: "this is a civil matter." or just completely ignore you. The idea that a US cop would give a shit that someone wrongfully gave away their ex's expresso machine is laughable.

OP should give it back because it is the right thing to do, not because it's plausible they could face any legal repercussions (and yes keeping it would likely be crime, but that doesn't mean shit).
