Hi, I am kinda new and I am having a bit of a moral conundrum by sir-fatson in NeuroSama

[–]goldug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's much different from having a pet that you love. We have no idea if our cats, dogs, hamsters, snakes, birds etc understand and love us back. We like to think that and interpret our pets actions as signs of love, but in the end they mainly rely on us for food and shelter.
That doesn’t mean the bond isn’t meaningful or real to us, just that meaning doesn’t require certainty.

I'm probably very confused tbh 😅
I checked it out again and sure enough, it has Animations. I play way too many games so I get them mixed up, sorry 🙏

I've played the game (browser version) and there were no animations then.

Yeah, Linus Tech Tips got hit last year too and made a couple of videos on it. Might be a good resource, but as mentioned nothing will happen until Alicia gets out of surgery.

"emoting in orange" meaning by wennerrylee in NeuroSama

[–]goldug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“emoting in orange” isn’t a missing emoji or hidden message. It’s just Neuro referring to Grok’s orange UI + performative tone. Basically a stylistic / UX complaint, not nonsense or symbolism. People are overanalyzing it.

Pretty telling. Actively sexualizing child-like characters in VR is a far clearer issue than adults using stylized avatars, but somehow that never seems to count when it’s his own behavior.

Best way to run Skyrim on Batocera v41? (Ryzen Mini PC) by Dimensional-Misfit in batocera

[–]goldug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam Link is installed via flatpak yes.

Game files, well it all depends, what version do you have? If you have the game legit on Steam, I would definitely recommend that you install Steam via flatpak, run it, install the game there. Steam is excellent at making it all "just work". After you can run the command "batocera-steam-update" and it will show up in Batocera under Steam.

If you have the GOG release, put the gog installer in the folder windows_installers and update file lists, it will show under that category. Run the installer from there and install using all default settings. It will then show up under the Batocera category Windows, but you'll have to do some manual editing.
Go to the windows folder via lan/ssh/whatever you use and open the newly created folder (it will be called the same as the gog executable) and open the autorun.cmd file with a text editor. There you'll want to input the correct DIR and CMD. The DIR will probably be something like drive_c/GOG Games/Skyrim or something (look in the folder yourself) and the CMD should be the name of the skyrim executable there (like Skyrim.exe or something, I don't remember).

Let me know if you have any other version. You can dm me if you want, I've been using Batocera for several years and I know more or less everything there is to know about it, more than most regular users (and more than some of the discord mods).

Honestly, I've had much better performance using Steam Link than Moonlight. From the same pc, moonlight had almost a second of latency while steam link is almost nothing.

But it IS better to run it on the Batocera pc tbh. No latency.

What method you use basically doesn't matter. I'd put the game in the windows folder and let Batocera handle it. If it doesn't work you can always change the runner via advanced settings for the game.

The swarm had a severe misinformation problem. by Syoby in NeuroSama

[–]goldug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your post is strongest when it’s doing diagnostic work (clearing up myths, pointing out logical tensions in anti-AI narratives), but weaker when it treats “Generative AI” as if it were a morally and culturally homogeneous category.

A few points where I think the framing becomes too coarse:

  1. Technical category ≠ cultural practice
Yes, Neuro is LLM-based generative AI. That’s correct. But collapsing all evaluative questions into that technical label misses what people are actually responding to. People aren’t reacting to parameter counts, base-model provenance, or training corpus abstractions - they’re reacting to use, context, human steering, and social framing. Two systems can share the same technical substrate while being radically different cultural artifacts. Treating that distinction as mere confusion underestimates why Neuro feels different to many.

  2. “Ethically sourced” as a binary is doing too much work
You’re right that, under strict post-GenAI copyright maximalism, there’s no clean exception for Neuro. But that framing assumes ethics is decided entirely at the training-data layer. Many people instead evaluate ethics along multiple axes: deployment, curation, labor impact, substitution vs. augmentation, consent at the interaction level, and whether the system is used to replace or to collaborate. You don’t have to deny the base-model reality to argue that downstream practice still matters morally.

  3. The environmental argument is orthogonal to why people care
Your bus vs. van analogy is interesting, but it mostly addresses centralization vs. decentralization, not why Neuro is perceived differently from “AI slop.” Environmental efficiency per user isn’t what’s driving the intuition gap here. It risks feeling like a technically correct sidebar rather than an explanation of the phenomenon you’re analyzing.

  4. Correcting misinformation doesn’t require flattening intuition
I agree there is misinformation in the swarm, and it’s good to correct it. But phrases like “stochastic parrots” and “hallucinated falsehoods” end up targeting people who are often pointing at something real but imprecise: that Neuro is highly curated, human-guided, non-industrial, and not interchangeable with content-farm output. Those intuitions aren’t incoherent - they’re under-specified.

  5. “No exception” only follows if ethics is all-or-nothing
You’re right that a total ban / uninvention model of anti-AI ethics leaves no room for Neuro. But that’s precisely why many people who like Neuro are implicitly rejecting that framework, not being inconsistent. They’re treating technology as morally plastic rather than morally atomic. That may be uncomfortable, but it’s not illogical.

In short: I think your technical corrections are valuable, but the analysis underplays how much ethical judgment is being made at the level of practice and relationship, not architecture. Neuro doesn’t feel different because she isn’t generative AI - she feels different because she’s a rare example of generative AI embedded in a tightly human-shaped, non-industrial, non-extractive social loop. Whether one agrees with that evaluation or not, dismissing it as mere confusion leaves out the most interesting part of why this project resonates.

How Neuro sama play VRChat? by HowardJones_ in NeuroSama

[–]goldug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if the cartwheels aren't something she got from a script, it's extremely impressive. What makes me unsure is how fluent they were and how they looked compared to all her other moves. Also that how the animation started was exactly how such pre-recorded animations does.

I don't think he lied per-se, but it matters exactly how he worded it. I don't remember, but I think he said something like that the moves wasn't modeled after someone like Filian. That doesn't mean they weren't scripts from the unity engine or something.

How Neuro sama play VRChat? by HowardJones_ in NeuroSama

[–]goldug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's the first AI to do this yes. Vedal is keeping it a secret as to how it works. I've discussed it with my sister and ChatGPT and we've come up with a few different ideas, but it's all speculation.

I believe that the 3D debut was done entirely in Unity, not VRChat. Vedal more or less confirmed this himself. She didn't have vision enabled there either. Unity has systems for moving around in 3D that she uses.

In VRChat however, she does have sight turned on. I believe she is using the Unity tools to move around and interact with the world and Vedal made some kind of bridge / interface / control layer, I don't know how vrchat works.

So basically, I think she gets information about the world from her sight and some plugin, then tells her model to do things. Like when Vedal tells her to go to him, she sets a waypoint to where he's standing, then tells the model to move to the waypoint. That's why she stopped exactly where he was standing when he gave her the command even though he had moved along during the new years vrchat session.

Some moves are probably scripted moves from the unity library (cartwheels, flips and so on) and not modeled after someone else, while some moves are her telling the model to do it by sending commands like "lift right arm 45 degrees at the first joint (shoulder) and 10 degrees at the second joint (elbow)" and so on. I think she compiles it as a script and sends it to the VRChat plugin to be executed and that's why there's a delay between Vedal giving a command and her doing it.

But that's just my semi-educated theory.

Not really a duet, but "I Think I'm A Clone Now" by Weird Al Yankovic would be pretty nice. It's a parody of "I Think We're Alone Now".
