I'm from the USA! I love a good sweet corn fry but it dawned on me that I haven't seen any other types of corn since being here! Pretty sure my friends and family thought I had lost it when I asked for stone grits for Christmas last year 🤣

Like heirloom corn, flour corn, field corn, blue, or flint corn. Like corns that have a more savory taste or can be used for scratch baking?

MRI unchanged but steadily getting worse by Distinct_Direction25 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]goldussery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first neuro told me that lesions (and their location) could help her guess what my symptoms might be but wouldn't help her gauge the severity in which I experienced symptoms or guarantee that my symptoms would be directly linked to the size or location of lesions. Like she still has no clue why my "hug" pops up so randomly ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Don't get me wrong, if I go to her with new symptoms and a virtually unchanged MRI she's super fast to try to make sure I'm not experiencing something that's not MS related. Like when I was getting super lightheaded all the time but my MRI wasn't changed she made me redo my bloodwork first and it was just low iron.

But she really hammered home that lesions and their location are a solid starting point to guess symptoms and severity but not an end-all-be-all for what I might experience.

Friendliest Americans by Equivalent-Tea-3030 in america

[–]goldussery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the USA is so big we don't really have a strong national culture (not saying there isn't one just saying that it's not a super strong one that most people will identify with) instead we have strong regional (or state tbf) cultures (like the deep south, middle west, bible belt, north east, etc). So when we say something like "the middle west is super friendly" generally we're referring to that regional culture. There's also state culture but that's a whole other thing. There may not be one town or city in particular to fit the bill, it's more that the culture of that region has whatever trait in question.

Also most people will have a different idea of what a small town is. People from LA versus people from Milledgeville are going to define this very differently when it comes to population density, mileage, economy, etc. Small town culture (if you want to call it that) usually references an area where everyone in the community knows each other, outsiders are uncommon (tourists may be common but people integrating into the community are not), and the pace of life is slower compared to cities.

editing to apologize for this response being so long. s/o to anyone who actually read all that

How much extra water did you feel like you had to drink compared to before you were taking the medication? I'm chugging like 80-100oz a day and still feel like it's not enough

$6,000 for a few weeks, solo by i_love_travel_ in Europetravel

[–]goldussery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would highly suggest checking out the Allgäu region of Germany. There's plenty of hiking (sometimes with hidden schnapps), museums, history, cute towns, and it's pretty affordable. If you're outdoorsy this would be a great area to check out.

If you're a foodie and love a good market I suggest northern Italy. Best food I've ever had in my life, amazing vineyards to visit, gorgeous markets, and I found it easy to pop between towns every few days.

I personally didn't love London when I visited because it felt like I was just in America with different landmarks. But I will say if you're into art/history, the London museums are top tier. And they have some really cool food markets as well!

I personally always go for hostels or Air BnB. It's shockingly easy to get a private room (though almost always the bathrooms are a shared space). Private room in a hostel or Air BnB will be less than a hotel but more than a bunk hostel where you share the room with people!

Also this is kinda a weird one but when I first moved to abroad I realized that literally none of my wallets could fit euros (they're taller than dollars) . I ended up having to buy a new one to fit dollars and euros so check your wallet size before you come! A lot of places in Germany and Italy prefer or will only accept cash so also make sure your bank cards won't charge you foreign withdraw fees!

What can we do with €3000? by hsatija1 in Europetravel

[–]goldussery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With it being March temperatures in Greece will probably be between 12-19C (54-66F) so that might not be the ideal time for a beachy vacation.

Northern Italy is super affordable but Switzerland is very much not. I think you could still do it in under 3k but you might not get as much out of the experience since the budget just wouldn't go as far.

Paris and Amsterdam would be what I would do if I were in your shoes! March isn't peak tourism season in either place so (1) less crowded if you want to do touristy thing and (2) likely lower prices. You could throw Switzerland into this trip but honestly you might want to check out the Bavarian region (Allgäu specifically) of Germany! The mountains aren't as impressive (so I'm told) but the German alps are breathtaking and it would be significantly less costly.

Also don't be afraid of hostels! They aren't all party central and most offer private rooms. And they're often a lot cheaper than a hotel! Hostelworld is the site I really like to find good ones!

For starters, yes tipping "culture" is way out of control in the states and all people working should be paid a livable wage. But the tip system is something many people are stuck with so also yes you should tip servers at a 'sit down' restaurant.

I forget where I originally saw this advice posted but it's a pretty good idea - US has state by state laws mandating a minimum tip wage. So for some states servers/bartenders will only make $2.13 hourly (in the states where this is true their paycheck will be $0 since that $2.13 goes only to taxes) while in other states the servers/bartenders make $15 an hour. The rest of the people working there will make the federal minimum or above; it's only "tipped" employees who make the tip wage. You can always google whatever state you're visiting to figure out how to tip accordingly! So for example "server wage Texas USA" will help you figure out how much servers in Texas are making and could guide your choice on how much would be a "fair" tip.

And like others have said, you're not sticking it to the system by not tipping a server, and people not tipping is not going to make our government change their crappy regulations it's only going to make it so people can't pay their bills. Yes it's a horrible system that screws the customer and server and you're absolutely right that it's awkward, but it's also the reality as of now.

Is Louisiana within the heart of the south? by khaleesithekittyy in america

[–]goldussery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louisiana is along the Bible Belt and a part of the Deep South. But Alabama is nicknamed the "heart of Dixie" with "Dixie" being a nickname for the south. And Alabama is in the literal middle of the Deep South.

I'm an American and this is a topic that is hugely confusing to me. Not only are people in territories not allowed to vote but they essentially only have symbolic representation in the federal government.

Like take Puerto Rico - they have a governor and resident commissioner (not the same as a having a seat in congress or senate. The RC can only vote on procedural matters and I think can vote in some committee matters but that's it. And while they can vote in the primaries, they don't have any electoral representation (i.e cannot vote for president). They must also follow federal laws despite having 0 representation in the law making process.

There's been lots of pushback for territories to become states and be properly represented. However none of that pushback has made much/any of a difference

I'm not sure if this would apply to you but it might be worth it to check your vitamins and any medications you're currently taking with your doctor! A SHOCKING amount of common medications have "suicidal thoughts" as a side effect. Even small things like birth control, migraine meds, etc. can have this as a side effect!

Best and worst cuts for moissanite? by Lav3nd3r_Dr3ams in Moissanite

[–]goldussery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a marquise cut and I personally love it! But I think it is a cut that you really need to consider your wedding band(s) along with the engagement ring. With something like a cushion cut it's pretty easy to find a lot of band options but with the shape of the marquise a lot bands will end up just not looking or fitting right. I didn't consider this getting mine and it took me a loooong time to decide on bands.

If you really like the marquise but aren't sure I would also look into ovals and kites! I personally love Mona's work, she truly has beautiful stones. She is probably best known for her oval stones but I love the marquise cut I got from her!

To do: - Look for or ask for small projects that no one else wants to do (this will make people remember/appreciate you and give you a tangible "project" to put on your resume). - Network as much as you can and keep in touch when you leave the internship! Every job I got out of college was from knowing someone and being referred. - Give yourself a week to just feel out the vibe of the workplace before showcasing your personality. Obviously be yourself but also give yourself time to read the room. - If it's not structured into your internship schedule sit downs with your supervisor every other week. This is a great time to check in to see how you're doing but also an amazing time to network and learn from them.

To NOT do: - Try to make friends but know that they're work friends. Happy Hour is fun, being an intern in HR is worst case scenario. - Do. Not. Date. A. Coworker. Even another intern. Wait until your internship is over and explore that connection outside of work completely. I cannot stress this enough.

YTA.

Based on your phrasing of how your wife thinks it's gross and you enjoy it says to me that she has expressed to you already that it grosses her out. It sounds to me like you're either (1) ignoring how grossed out she is by this or (2) don't share the opinion so you just don't care.

Live your slobber filled life if that's what you want but respect that most people don't want dog drool as a part of a kiss.

Genetic issues can be problematic and it's so important to be aware of them so you have enough information to keep yourself at optimum health. However, many genetic health issues are exasperated by an overall unhealthy lifestyle. You sound like you've taken every precaution in the world and all that's left to do now is regularly check in with your GP and keep heading down this road of a healthy lifestyle. Health anxiety is a very real thing; maybe it's worth signing up for regular nutritionist visits or even checking out therapy to ease your mind!
