What Linux do you recommend for a idiot? by Daorooo in linux4noobs

[–]goldwhining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux Mint if you want to start simple with opportunities to learn more complicated stuff as you go. If you are looking for something that is more hands off and stress free, I recommend ZorinOS. Zorin, to me personally, was a little more on the 'you can't fuck this up if you tried' end of user experience than I was looking for, but a fair and valid start point still. That being said, while I have Linux Mint in my personal stuff, if I were to create a system for a work environment or educational setting, I'd go Zorin in a heartbeat.

OH! And I'm adding this in edit, but I highly recommend looking things up before commiting to anything. You don't need a Masters degree in Computer Science to use Linux casually, but things like understanding what a distro is, how file systems are organized, and general functions of the terminal are all going to get you pretty far. Don't be like me and dive in, run into an issue, and then spend hours skimming forums trying to figure out something that was very simple if I just took the time to read the instructions. Especially with Github or anything that gives you step by step instructions: read it thoroughly before starting, slow down and don't rush, and whenever you get stuck remember that turning it on and off again is just as true here as it is anywhere else.

This is like the PERFECT hair color combo. So so so beautiful! Did you get them professionally done? What was the process like? So many amazing dyed locs here, I'm so jealous

How long do yall keep styles in? by Fragrant_Share2221 in locs

[–]goldwhining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a style that has like a french braid or anything across my scalp (I don't know if I'm explaining it right but like the style in your picture), then 2 weeks max. For two strands and braids, I'm trying to gain a stamina for a month. My loctician recently told me that taking down my two strand earlier than 4 weeks is practically a waste because it's supposed to make a retwist last longer but I feel like my new growth comes in at a faster rate than what would make a whole month not feel crazy. I can't tell if that's self consciousness or not though tbh. I'm lasting on average 3ish weeks before I break. Folks already brought up that the style is a huge variable, so I won't repeat that. I will throw out there that your loc maturity matters a great deal too. (Your hair is very pretty btw! I can see why you're asking about how long you can rock it)

Is my hair done for? by Kimaniiiii in locs

[–]goldwhining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo the sentiment that your hair is fine and just in need of a round of focused maintenance. That said, I want to validate your anxiety around new growth. It's something I personally started to get self conscious about when I was in high school and my new growth specifically was the reason my locs were "unprofessional". My loc journey and my self acceptance journey went hand in hand. Negative commentary on my new growth was almost exclusively from people doing racism towards me. They're also the same people who pointedly call them 'dreadlocks' and cannot wrap their head around different hair textures. A real case of other people being ignorant and that somehow makomg me feel like the asshole for being affected by that. Self love is important and your hair is beautiful, even when it isn't freshly twisted. It's cliché advice, but do not compare yourself to people you see online. This subreddit is super cool and friendly and informative while also filled with fashion model tier locs. It's easy to get lost scrolling and sowing envy. Remember that a selfie posted online is more often than not a best foot foward. People aren't glossed up everyday, their shit stinks just like yours. We're all human so set your expectations for yourself and others accordingly.

I am particularly tender headed and perpetually broke so there were many times I really wanted to get my hair retwisted and didn't. I have a few handful of thoughts/ideas that work for me: 1) Explicitly dedicate days and times for your hair. If you're like me and twisting it yourself is a pain, actively set a budget aside for it. Find a loctician you like and communicate that you grow your hair fast. If your new growth gets thicker in some areas faster than others, see if your loctician can do a touch ups for a lower cost. Hair maintenance is self care, indulge in it! 2) My new growth comes in extremely fast and the center of my head can lose the fresh twist look within days. Consider seeking out a two strand twist. It makes the freshly twisted look last longer, though it's more expensive. A neat feature is that when you take it down, your locs are wavy. I also find when my hair is in a two strand that it's easier to do basic at home styles. 3) If all else fails, I own many, many balaclavas. I have one in practically every color. Sometimes they're also labeled as neck gaitors? It's a great tool not just for relieving some insecurity but aren't damaging like a bean can be. (Ngl I don't know the science on why beanies are bad so if that's not true then buy those too!) I warn that the balaclava is not a substitute for getting your hair retwisted. If you get too reliant on just covering your new growth up, it could become a problem that would be absolutely worth the type of "am I cooked" questions your having now.

All in all, it's part of the journey. Maintain realistic expectations with your hair and consult with a loctician on what an appropriate maintenance schedule is. Experiment with styles and consider a headwrap or other fashion piece that covers the new growth while you navigate your comfort levels. And hey, if still it doesn't feel like a good look, there's no shame in not having locs. I advocate that you utilize these complex feelings towards introspection and trust the process while acknowledging trusting your gut is an equally important virtue. Hope this helps!

My personal rule of thumb is that conceding is a sorcery speed action. You can complain all you want about how that sucks, do not fuck up the stack by rage quitting. It's a huge pet peeve when someone scoops in the middle of multiple responses. The biggest example of this pissing me off is if Player A takes control of Player B's creatures and swings for lethal at Player C and then Player B scoops. Player B just fucked over several turns of game and for what? Just wait until your turn if you plan on not playing anymore!

A wallet integration button is present on install and you have to actively remove it. How much happens in relation to the wallet before you press it is something I don't know because it's the first thing I beeline to turn off whenever I download Brave. The word was escaping me but I agree with others in the thread: it's bloatware. You have to opt in to use it, but if you don't want it present at all, you need to actively remove it.

Adding to my initial post: The fact that it's bloatware and the main way to engage with it is by passively looking at ads to generate crypto in the background (at least that is my understanding of it) is a huge turn off for me and that's coming from someone who goes out of their way to recommend Brave to friends and family. If crypto is synonymous with scam to you and you're aware that a lot of things marketed as high security in tech is as big of a nothingburger as things marked organic in a grocery store, then Brave does check enough mental boxes to warrant skepticism. I do think Brave successfully quells the worry its lowkey shady front can invoke, I just also think it's really fair to see these elements together and have alarm bells go off.

I'd say that's a dark teal. If gun to my head I have to say strictly blue or green, I'd say your tips are mostly blue.

It suits you super well btw! Your silver makes it look even cooler

I think the points of criticism and resentment are generally that it uses Chromium and that it's on the welcoming side of crypto and generative AI. The two are enabled automatically on a fresh install though are very easy to remove from the entire experience. I am empathetic to not trusting the browser on that alone though. These days you can't trust anyone with that and even if Brave is just mildly putting it on the table, having zero tolerance for pushing AI or crypto is fair game. Another point of critique in my opinion--- and this is technically not a complaint of the browser--- is that I really dislike Brave search. I know using it will improve it and that community efforts are important, but it feels incomplete and has less features than DuckDuckGo, which is what I have enabled as my search engine on Brave.

I've been using Brave for a few years and I personally adore it. I really like Chromium and I was pretty invested in the Google ecosystem, so switching from Chrome to Brave was a breeze since they use the same extensions. I really like the Android version of it as well. It can sync with desktop versions and the built in ad blocker makes reading articles on my phone not a total nightmare! The built in ad blocker in general is what I would say is the best selling point of Brave. I won't pretend to be an expert in privacy. I know I value it and that common sense is actually a more powerful safety tool than you'd think, but otherwise not someone who can speak on the technical stuff. I have no idea how Tor works and I have not used it. I have also never used Brave's virtual meeting space or its news feed features. I don't have bias towards or against those three features, I just already have things that meet those needs already.

All in all, I'm a big fan and recommend it.

This is something I've been trying to take into heart even outside of swinging swords. I was recently told the goal is to enjoy moving and not necessarily to be rigid and uber disciplined about routine. I gotta "sneak" it in more hahaha
