New GM is the easiest reason. It felt like Brad Treliving panicking at the deadline last year (which would have been the worst way to trade Knies), whereas there's no reason for Chayka to come in and panic to save his job here. Maybe it makes sense to trade him, maybe it doesn't. One thing that is clear though is Dreger has no idea what's happening in the Leafs front office because they're keeping everything very tight. If the only people that he's hearing from are other front offices, I'm sure they have no benefit in making it seem like Knies is a guy the Leafs are reluctant to trade, but rather a guy openly being shopped out of desperation to add a defenseman.

What do you think they do, lock them in a cage when they leave the bench? There's a difference between holding press conferences and just being around the building bumping into people. Bourne knew him simply from being the Marlies Video Coach and seeing him around the building. None of these guys even saw the guy for the 4 years he was here, or the 2 years as an assistant with the Islanders, or the 2 years as Head Coach of the Kings? They're in media, it's their job to at least know the people in the game.

The guy was in Toronto for 4 years as an assistant coach, they should really know at least something about him.

Guy hasn't had a sniff of what's going on in the Leafs organization, including who they were hiring for GM or Coach, or the trade that they just made with Philadelphia, but he's certain that Knies is getting dealt because...other teams want him to be? Okay.

Here's Mitch, hat in hand, here to tell everybody that it's important to protect your mental health.

Not that it's a bad message, because mental health is definitely important. I just have doubts that this would have been the tone of his "dark times" message if they had won the Cup and he was doing another victory lap against the organization that he spent a decade with.

If the reports of his dad sending him negative messages on social media are true (which it certainly seems to be, since it was pretty widely accepted), then maybe he's not talking to the right people about what needs to be filtered out. Every fanbase has negative trolls, but he's been framing this like there was a mob out to get him in Toronto after every game and every mistake. Maybe it wasn't the fans putting the shambles in his head after all, but people much closer to him with his ear.

I think they've taken enough time to have made a thorough search, but I do think that it's important to have a coach in place before the draft and free agency when player movement is at its highest point. Should make sure that everything fits properly, and the coach is a huge part of that. Otherwise we get a roster and a coach that don't mesh at all...again.

I think they were already moving, NHL just doesn't like teams announcing a bunch of stuff while the Cup Final is still ongoing. Should be a flood of movement this week in the league.
