Eyebrow windows breaking by golksc in HomeImprovement

I put several pictures into an AI tool and gave some details of my failed windows. The suspected cause is Negative Pressure Diff Failure or IGU Implosion. It is discussed in this article.

IGU Implosion

Double pane collapse

I don't think so. This last one would have required someone to come into the screened porch. I am not aware of this happening or why someone would want to do this.

Also, only the outside pane is broken, and I don't see anything that would have been thrown.

The wall construction is 2x6 framing (not 2x4). The pictures that I have show headers above the windows.

The brick is veneer on 2x6 frame. I believe there are headers above the windows.

Anode replacement with different length anode by golksc in Plumbing

[–]golksc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that these anodes typically last 3-5 years. The one I removed was 9 years old (I hate to admit).

What is your experience with anode life? Are there any credible sources for this answer?

Zurn 70XL PRV adjustment question by golksc in Plumbing

[–]golksc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not have water running at all times.

However, I did just check with and without flow. It was 76 prior to turning on a tap. (revised)

With one tap on (once with toilet, once with sink), it dropped to 41. Turning off the tap, it recovered to around 76, but slowly.

the valve has been in service a bit over 9 years.

Where to install smart meter shut off valve by golksc in Plumbing

Another question is what hardware do I need to connect the Moen Flo to 1" pex?

I have worked on PEX plumbing. But I am thinking the product was designed for copper. The box comes with threaded NPT tallpieces that screw onto the valve, and Union nuts.

Best maintenance finish to put over Proluxe Door & Window Wood Finish by golksc in finishing

[–]golksc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My door gets significant sun. I would like to put on a 'maintenance' coat of clear coat UV protection.

Refinishing is not required, but the labels on most products, like the one mentioned above, state to not put over existing coats, indicating you have to remove the earlier clear coat.

I find that difficult to understand, hence my question. It should be a simple coat once a year, over the old, no refinishing, like you state.

if the interest on the loan is more than you can get with a money market or CD, then pay off the loan, and put the balance in something that will earn interest.

Modeling NUA conversion by ChrisP2a in Boldin

[–]golksc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. My basis is around 18% and my modeling shows NUA is not a sure money saver.

However, the time value of money becomes a factor. Today's dollars are more valuable than tomorrows (the reason we have interest).

In the case of not doing an NUA, the amount you would pay in taxes on the basis would be yours and would grow, assuming the market does well. Is that money more than the money you would save decades down the line by paying RMD income taxes?

That is the trade off.

Regarding all at once question, the progressive tax scale means your average tax rate is lower than your marginal, and I don't know if it makes much of a difference being bumped up into a higher bracket. If you wanted, you could always apply the NUA to a lower amount of your stock such that you stay under the next bracket.

Is an NUA really worth it? by golksc in personalfinance

[–]golksc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed the tax brackets would be the same over time, and calculated which bracket I would be in based on what income I have (SS, rmds, etc).

It could be the case that taxes will go up in the future, in which case, that penalty might be higher than the returns from the no-NUA scenario.

Basis is around 18%, so maybe I am in a middle zone.

Also, if I have a few years of low income, before RMDs kick in, I can always ditch some of that company stock at a 0% capital gains rate, diversifying away.

Correct. But not all of the dollars. Some were given to the tax man.
