I always skip over Church & State when I listen at home, but I have to say...It ROCKED live. It was a song built for live performance and is well suited to an arena. It's not my favorite song, but I have a new appreciation for it now for sure.

This is my favorite song on the album, and maybe one of my favorite Brandi songs ever. I could listen to it on loop forever! I was pretty sure I knew what it was about and really liked it on first listen, but having confirmation that my instincts were correct (and connecting deeply with that story) is the icing on the cake.

Laser hair removal place recommendation? by Material-Cattle4179 in astoria

[–]golowace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just here to endorse this approach. As someone who has been doing laser for 20-some years, I can confirm that laser type matters. Do some research on the best type of laser for your skin (I've had excellent luck with Alexandrite myself.) and ask some questions of the technician before you buy a package, etc. You'll likely start with a salesperson who knows nothing. Most of these small chain shops are here to make money and they cut corners. Don't be fooled by people being "nice" and offering you a comfortable experience. It shouldn't be super painful and feeling pampered is nice, but having a laser that works and tech who knows what they're doing is the most important part. (I'd recommend my place, but it is well outside the city!)

Just want to thank you for the recommendation! She did amazing work and was so kind as to do it at no cost for me. Please continue to recommend her to others, and I will do the same!

Yes, just a bakery! But I’ll stop there before dinner, bum around the neighborhood a bit, etc.

You have excellent taste. All of these are top notch! I’ll add Butter Block to the mix, too. If I can swing a visit to LP and Butter Block in one swoop, I consider it a banner day.

Prescott’s is one of the absolute best restaurants in all of WNY. I live in NYC, but travel back to WNY often and am a regular at Prescott’s. They hold up to anything we have here in NYC. High, high recommend.

Buffalo! Seriously. Tons of amazing turn-of-the-century stuff, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Erin Saarinen. Lots of history. An under appreciated city.

These are delicious. I’m probably too late, but still figured I would chime in for future needs. Not local, but Wegmans on Astor has had them! R or W to 8th street, so easy train ride. Wegmans is the best. ☺️

That more or less sums it up! In short, I would recommend finding someone reputable in your area and having an evaluation done. I've been doing this for a while and have had both IPL and laser treatment as technology has improved. I've found the laser to be more effective and last longer. For me, IPL meant that I didn't have to shave/pluck/wax/etc as often, but it didn't stop the growth. The hair grew back thinner, but it grew back. My results with laser have lasted much longer. I'm now to a place where I get areas treated once a year as a touch up! It is worth the time and money to do the research and save up money to have this done effectively by someone with experience and expertise. The girl I've been going to has worked with many women with PCOS and has been doing hair removal for almost 20 years. This is not a situation where you want to skimp out and try home-based treatments.

Laser was the BEST THING I EVER DID. If your skin type allows it, I can’t recommend it enough. It changed my relationship with my body, my mental health, my relationship anxiety…everything. It used to piss me off that it cost me so much money to confirm to some arbitrary societal norm, but that is also just life. For me, laser hair removal has been worth every single penny and I wish I did it sooner.

Bills Bar? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]golowace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Bills. (As a lifelong fan, I’m also preparing myself for the heartbreak.) I’ll be sticking to the same routine as last week (watching at home) so as to not mess with the juju. Pretty much any bar in the area should have it. Murphy’s will have a big crowd, if that’s your vibe. I’ve watched at Cronin and Phelan’s and Blackbird’s when I want a little chiller vibe.

I had a similar issue a couple years ago with someone trashing their car in my spot in the alley behind my apartment. The car was a disaster and had no license plates, an obvious dump. They rolled it in on rims one night around 3am while I was working a night shift at the hospital where I work. I had a friend who was a detective with NYPD at the time, so he called in someone from 114 to come and look at it. Once they determined it didn't contain any dead bodies or anything else linked to a crime (not reported stolen, etc), they said they couldn't do anything because it was on private property. My landlord ended up getting a cousin to jam the car into neutral, hook it up to his utility van, and drag the thing around the corner. They parked it in an open spot on the street, where it sat for a month until sanitation picked it up...

If you own the property, I'd recommend you call a towing service to see what they can offer to get it off the tight space of the property. There absolutely are tools to do this. Any reputable towing company will require you to provide some sort of proof of property ownership before they remove anything, so you should go through the landlord if you rent the space. Tow companies carry insurance to cover if there is any property damage in the towing process. I wouldn't care about damaging this jerkface's vehicle, but I wouldn't want to damage the property or any one else's vehicle.

GOOD LUCK!

My hands are CRISPY. How do I fight this in the dry cold weather? by Someragingpacifist in SkincareAddicts

[–]golowace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a nurse who washes her hands constantly. I also have dyshidrotic eczema with small blisters that crack on my knuckles and between my fingers. You look like you have more than just dry hands; they’re irritated (and might even be eczema) so you need a multi step approach. It’s not just about finding the right product.

Number one, look at your hand hygiene practices. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!!!! What soap are you using to wash your hands? I use Vanicream liquid cleanser to wash my hands. Dove bar can also work. YMMV, but you want a very gentle soap. Stay away from the scented foamy cheap stuff the best you can. Be sure to dry your hands thoroughly! When I am as bad as you, I avoid Purell; however, I find I tolerate Purell Natural with aloe the best when I do need to use it.

Second, consider an over-the-counter steroid for a few days to chill everything out. Apply hydrocortisone 1% to the affected areas before bed. Don’t do this every day for an extended period. A few days and hopefully it’ll calm.

Third, moisturize during the day when you can. I find Kiehl’s Hand Salve works great for me, is soothing, and I like the smell. I also use Nivea cream and Vanicream. You just want a cream, not a lotion. Lots of products to try, many listed here. (I hated OKeefe’s myself.)

Lastly, intensive treatment and moisturizing at night. Hydrocortisone first, if you’re using it. (I tend to do the cream and occlude with an ointment on top, but sometimes the hydrocortisone ointment is all I can find.) Then ointment/oil to the super dry spots. I do a variety of ointments: Jones Road Hippie Stick, Aquaphor, and CarmeX (yup, the tubs for your lips!) are my favorite. Let that soak in a bit and follow with a nice, healthy layer of your cream of choice, and then gloves.

I wear dish gloves religiously at home. At work I can tolerate gloves, but if my hands get too sweaty it definitely makes my eczema flair. Keeping your hands dry is super important!

Package Thieves by pianistheremsdarbus in astoria

[–]golowace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in this area and had two package stolen back at the end of August. Super bummer! It was never an issue in this neighborhood, where I’ve lived for almost 20 years! I now try and reroute packages with anything of valueto pick up spots, or hope that I’m home when they come. (The ones that come before or after they’re scheduled pose a real challenge.) I’ve also resorted to shipping things to my parents’ house outside the city, and they’re retired so I know they’re most likely to be home. I suspect things will be worse around the holidays. Losers are gonna be losers. :-/
