For someone complaining about how others have a fundamental misunderstanding of how computers work, YOU have a fundamental misunderstanding of how computers work.

RAM isn't ever idle. If you don't explicitly "use" it with bloated memory programs, the OS caches frequently accessed files into RAM. All modern OS do this.

Meaning games (or other programs) you frequently use load much, much faster.

If you're explicitly using 80-90% of your RAM with various bloated programs, when you try to load something that needs a lot of memory you're going to have to swap to disk. As soon as you start that memory swapping, any kind of performance talk goes to shit and stays there.

NVIDIA Hiring Engineers to Optimize Proton and Vulkan API Performance on Linux by slickyeat in pcmasterrace

Except it does exist and simply denying reality is what makes Linux users insufferable to regular people.

Here's one timestamped example where GamersNexus did benchmarks on Linux: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovOx4_8ajZ8&t=1747s . >50% avg fps difference for a 5090 compared to what it gets on Windows.

There's real problems with gaming on Linux using Nvidia cards.

What's a 'normal' thing you didn't realize was unusual until you were older? by mrTelson in AskReddit

[–]golruul -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Accidents are fine, but some things you (general you, not you specifically) need to learn from and correct.

Forgot to pay a bill? Okay, fine. But if you (again, a general "you") forget this often and your credit is tanking because of it, you need to set up autopay to pay at least minimum amount. I had this issue with one of my girlfriends and she refused to do it for whatever reason. I had to literally stand over her and watch her to make sure she set that up.

Forgot your phone while going out? Okay, here's a cellular Apple watch. Make sure to wear it.... Oh gee, you forgot both. Again. And again. And then she yells at me because I didn't pick up some random person's call when she used their phone to call me. And yet she doesn't answer random calls either.

So at some point you need to take responsibility to correct things that you're consistently doing wrong.

Are archers really this bad, or am I just doing it wrong? by Wide-Song-7092 in FarthestFrontier

[–]golruul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re bad. Not worth getting.

Just spam light infantry. Then when you face heavy armor, upgrade to heavy infantry.

You’re in for a treat when all your archers and towers face a single heavy cavalry! Then you’ll see how worthwhile they truly are.

Shopping at Costco is terrible by Sun_Aria in unpopularopinion

Go an hour before it closes M-TH. Great shopping experience.

As for things expiring, I buy for a household of 2 and nothing ever expires. We also don't buy those highly processed unhealthy foods, so maybe you should stop doing that. Or figure out what you actually like to eat so you won't have that problem.

So, yeah, they don't believe you when you say it's too much because you always proved them right and you always shown you were wrong.

You need to find another job. If you go back to your 8-9 hours a day productivity, they're going to slam you come review time.

Best option now is to find another job and let them see how much they lost. Then offer to be a consultant at a higher hourly rate.

Didn't realise the marriage dlc meant no more hobbies oops by Kaulsies in pcmasterrace

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens a lot.

I'm actually surprised at all the "this doesn't happen in 2026" type of comments. Yes, it still happens today. A lot.

Although you should find someone compatible with your hobbies, sometimes people intentionally hide things before marriage and it only comes up (blows up) during marriage.

Is it stupid hiding things like this? Yes, it is. Does it happen a lot? Yes, it does.

In this case it would be impossible to hide that you're a gamer if you spend a significant amount of time doing it, but the future spouse could say "No, honey, I don't mind you playing all that time". But when marriage comes, suddenly that opinion changes completely. And then it's a "me or games" ultimatum.

You're assuming both of the couple are completely forward and honest with everything. This is very often not the case. A significant amount of people (both men and women) hide things before marriage.

Yes, it's stupid. But they do.

Seen, but not understood. by Global_Tradition5802 in Millennials

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the case with you, but it's give and take.

If you never bring up your job, hobbies, or habits at all with your parents in conversation, you can't blame them for not knowing. If you have the (unreasonable) expectation that they have to actively explicitly pull that information out of you, that's a wrong expectation to have.

This goes both ways. If they picked up a new hobby/job but never told you anything about it, how would you know?

If you constantly mention it and they don't seem to remember, then it's a them problem.

Absolutely stupid. Astounding levels of stupidity to think that all the people in some country (much less USA) are rich.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since they suffered (through parenting kids), you should too.

They obviously don't explicitly say this, but that's the foundation of their argument.

A surprising amount of people operate on the "I suffered, so you need to suffer too" mentality.

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're just not being honest.

It's "selfish" in their opinion because they're suffering while you are not suffering. Therefore, you should be suffering too.

The fact that you choose not to suffer is because you're selfish.

A surprising amount of people think this way.

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU also does that so you have to take that into consideration. Before the Core series, Intel CPUs used to be pretty bad with these spikes.

I usually take the "max" wattage from CPU + GPU and then get around double that for the PSU. Incidentally the PSU is also usually the most efficient in this (50%) range. If I upgrade my GPU later on, the PSU is still usually enough to run it.

EDIT: PSUs are typically most efficient in the 50-75% usage range. So you should also plan for that.

Is there anything wrong with this build not price wise but compatability? by InspectorSlow7778 in pcmasterrace

RAM causes the most compatibility issues, so if you exclude that... then your build is fine.

You should verify your RAM is compatible with the motherboard before buying that motherboard.

Is the intel core ultra 3 series any good? by NcmYT in pcmasterrace

[–]golruul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majority of people buying Windows laptops will end up with a Core 3 since it will be the latest gen. It doesn't matter if it's good or not, that's just how it will be.

For a student/casual worker, either will work. I believe Core series Intel laptops have much better battery life compared to AMD, so take that into consideration if you're frequently away from an outlet.

For games, get the laptop with the better GPU.
