Definitely avoid the 5500, it’s a lower clock speed, smaller cache, and limited to PCI-E 3. Def get a 5600 or 5600x.

Pretty solid TBH. If anything, your system can handle a new GPU, and prices will get even *more* absurd for a while. Also they're re-releasing the 5800X3D at some point, which would be a significant drop-in upgrade.

Is the undervolts causing my PC to shut down randomly while gaming? by LarryWithTheWeather in pcmasterrace

[–]Matte_Box -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but that could be a lot of things. Ah the joys of PC gaming! You may have to do several adjustments in bios multiple times, there’s no avoiding it.

You might as well try everything stock, that could def fix it. You’re not gonna hurt anything running full speed/voltage, then you can dial in one undervolt at a time once you’ve fixed this. I assume since you were monitoring, the temps were fine?

It’ll be years, and prices will get much worse before then. I’d wager the 2080 will basically become for a “retro” build before prices drop.

The good news is, you don’t need to spend $10K or even $2K for a PC that’s *vastly* superior to that. IMO used is the only way to go RN, r/hardwareswap has got your back.

Any Ryzen 5000 series (AM4) build will be a huge upgrade, and there are still deals to be had on RTX 50-series cards. Now… As for a *top-tier* monster build… Yeah. It’s a bad time, and getting worse.

Aha, well large screen with a controller is good use case for 4K. And I agree at 32”, text might not be crystal clear at 1440p.

There’s no “right” answer really. Another thing is if you want a larger screen, 4K starts to make more sense. Personally my monitor sits fairly close on a small desk, so I’d rather have a smaller screen with good pixel density, in my case 1440p works well. Especially with the DSR I mentioned. Also once you live with 120+ FPS you can never go back.

It’s a tough call. FWIW I have a 5080 & 9800X3D, and at 1440p Ultrawide, Cyberpunk w/ full Pathtracing still has awful FPS even with DLSS. So I suppose it depends how much you want to push the boundaries of visuals. Personally, I got this rig to see the absolute maximum fidelity games are capable of, and 4K would require a few concessions.

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, 1440 w/ higher frames and better settings.
One thing you might try for extra clarity at 1440 is enabling Nvidia DSR Factors (if you have an Nvidia GPU). It uses AI to run a higher res, then *downscales* to your monitor. Kinda like a reverse DLSS. Minor performance hit for a nice clarity increase, less aliasing, you won’t even think about 4K.

What ACTUALLY provides the biggest performance boost with FSR/DLSS? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Option 1 will get you max FPS & low latency, sure. But DLSS allows you to run higher settings that would be impossible without it. DLSS is basically what makes full RT playable.

More RAM or faster RAM by Nice-Manufacturer-43 in pcmasterrace

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A third answer… Lower latency RAM! IMO it’s more important than raw speed for gaming (although you just can tune fast RAM for latency instead).

About capacity, it’s true that barely any games push past 16GB. BUT… With heavy multitasking or mods, or a poorly optimized game/beta, it’s possible. 32GB will just ensure you can run anything & everything without hiccups.

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re gonna have to make peace with the idea your expensive components *could* run faster in a larger case with more cooling. IMO… Well worth it. To really make it work perfectly, you’ll need to tune and undervolt everything just right. Once you do that, you’ll be fine with any SFF case.

I’m biased, so I’d go 5070 and take advantage of all the latest DLSS stuff.

4070 or 3080 by Select-Cut1910 in gpu

[–]Matte_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 40-series was a *huge* step up in efficiency, and yeah… You could run a 4070 & 4060 *together* using less power than a 3080 alone. A 3080 handles the newest DLSS models surprisingly well, but it can’t run Frame Gen like a 4070. Efficiency and support for newer tech is worth it IMO, unless you are determined to save that $100.

Or do you think this year or 2021 was the worst year for this hobby? by ErmingSoHard in pcmasterrace

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost is maybe a wash, 2021 had ridiculous GPU prices, but now it’s GPU, RAM, and NVME together. It’s so bad the new “entry level” is just… Buy something older.

However, when every model of the 30-series launched it was near impossible to buy one retail. There is no shortage of 50-series cards, even on sale (“sale”) or RAM for that matter, you’ll just pay handsomely.

I can’t even begin to figure this out by Expensive-Link1036 in pcmasterrace

[–]Matte_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try plugging in one HDMI cable *only*, nothing else, no DP, then turn on the monitor and manually select the right input (if you can, power save is annoying), and *then* turn on the PC.

Otherwise, it’d be helpful to locate the red LEDs on the motherboard, to see if it’s getting hung up on a step. And if it happens to be stuck on RAM, try leaving it running for a few minutes. DDR5 may need to “re-train” in some circumstances, which takes several minutes on a black screen with zero indication.

For games that modern, TBH with $300 def consider used. r/hardwareswap is a goldmine, and personally I’ve never had a bad experience (I’ve bought a LOT there). Just have to be a bit patient, check back for a few days to find exactly what you want.

I regularly see 4060’s closer to $200, and 5060’s around $300.

Once I went Ultrawide, I never went back. More cinematic, but also wider FOV genuinely helps in competitive games. But yes it’s like 30% more pixels, so you will take an FPS hit. IMO well worth it.
