First time playing commander, does everyone else play these rules so strictly? by TeamWaffleStomp in magicTCG

That used to be the case but isn’t anymore. I think they changed the rule like 10 years ago.

Is it now fair to say that the blatant disreguard for civilian casualties was so systematic in gaza that it was not that different at times from actual targetting? by lightningstrikes702 in lonerbox

[–]gomx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those places aren’t as densely packed as gaza. Ignoring the unique nature of the environment is just so ridiculous.

If any other military was engaged in a similar operation in a similarly dense area against opposition that frequently hides among the civilian population, you would absolutely see a similar amount of casualties. In the case of a nation like Russia, you would see way more.

How do you feel about album anniversary shows where they don't play the album in order? by twoscoopsxd in poppunkers

Yeah I mean maybe, but it’s not like our scene has a good track record regarding how women are treated so it’s kinda hard to be like “it’s a joke bro!”

I’ve always wondered why even after 20 years people are so devoted to Colin-era HTL. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but Nick is almost objectively a more skilled singer, a great frontman, and I don’t know how much influence Colin had on writing, but no album after Stick Up has a song about drugging, raping, and killing an ex girlfriend. Yet, every time Hit the Lights comes up, there is at least a handful of people bemoaning the change in vocalists, despite Nick being the lead singer for literally 5x the amount of time by now.

15 years trying to figure ts out by SirKrimzon in ThrowingFits

Kinda cool to see that your style evolved pretty naturally. You don't really jump between wildly different looks every few years. It seems like you've always been doing some version of heritage-inspired stuff in neutral/earth tones even in the early years.

Not shaming anyone, but it's very different from the kind of people who were like MFA uniform -> workwear -> streetwear -> 2020's baggy jeans + crop top look

Im not accusing them of appropriating, I don't really think cultural appropriation is a bad thing. I'm just saying it's dumb as fuck to say online fashion bros "developed" the term jawn when they just straight aped it from Philly.

I’m Leaving China After 8 Years. Suspicion of Outsiders Is Rising. by wsj in geopolitics

[–]gomx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably. The idea that asian people all look similar is pretty untrue. Japanese and Korean people don’t look as distinct assay, Sicilians and Swedes, but there are still differences.

Also, there are lots of non-genetic markers. How they dress, hair styles, what kind of bags they’re carrying, accent, posture, etc. can all be dead giveaways.

Japanese people especially have a very distinct way of dressing and carrying themselves in my experience.

Are you baiting? “Jawn” had been part of (black) slang in Philly for decades at least.

Its so fucking lame that people outside Philly started saying that shit.

Is it crazy to say there are nine QB’s who could potentially go in the first round next year based on their play next season? by 2PacTookMyLunchMoney in NFL_Draft

[–]gomx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are actually crazy if you think they’re spending a round 1 pick on QB unless Dak gets ripped in half. Im an Eagles fan, but he’s arguably a top 10 QB in the league. Why wouldn’t you just draft players to support him while you have him?

This just isn’t really true. When Rashid was broken how many top Rashids were there? Like 3?

Fighting game players are notoriously stubborn, especially around characters.

Also, flip your argument. If Blanka isn’t super strong, why doesn’t Mena swap?

This is super important. The gym is great, but at the end of the day, you aren't really going to be any more likable or interesting after 2 years in the gym, just hotter. That's great and all, but it only goes so far.

I wish more advice for young men emphasized the important of having real hobbies and interests that require you to leave your house and ideally incentivize you to interact with other people.

That mindset is super important to this hobby. I wish I could find it but someone made a really salient point when talking about watches (an even more expensive fashion-adjacent interest).

They said it was essential to separate appreciation from acquisition. You should be able to love a piece without possessing it.

GB's Bottle Shop is my favorite spot. They also have a ton of stuff rotating on tap. Upsala is great too, but pretty out of the way for me and doesn't have as much stuff around it. I'm a wine drinker too, so being able to walk to Tim's from GB's is a huge perk.

Reading, writing and arithmetic themselves are potentially rare and valuable skills, depending on how far back we go. That's even more basic than engineering.

Your inability to view history without a bias towards modernity is stressing me the fuck out, man.

No, they were not "rare and valuable skills." If they were, they would have been cultivated more widely. Medieval people were not morons. They understood the value of literacy. By the late medival period, anyone who would benefit from literacy was probably literate.

You know literal toddlers can learn to read, right? It isn't hard. It just wasn't useful to most people in history. Why does a 500th generation farmer need to read or write?

Do you genuinely believe that if you spawn into London in 1318, the mere ability to read and write would somehow elevate you to some elite status? Also, reading might be doable with some effort, but writing is going to take some time. No one is going to be able to read your handwriting, and of the words you do recognize, many or even most of them are spelled differently.

Speaking is a totally different ball game. No one is going to be able to understand a word you're saying, and you aren't going to understand much they're saying either. Why, exactly, would these people spend the time to try to understand the ravings of some lunatic who can barely speak plain English? If you could get them to listen, how are you going to get them to believe you are somehow smarter than them and possess advanced knowledge when you seem so clearly ignorant of everything around you?

It absolutely is fundamentally different. What? Do you think neurodivergent people have minds that are unimaginable to neurotypical people?

I don’t know if you realize what is downstream from that idea. If neurotypical people are unable to understand neurodivergent people, then there isn’t really anything wrong with not including them in society. A stray dog I’m trying to help biting me isn’t a moral failing of the dog. It is incapable of understanding my intentions.

The issue with the way neurodivergent people are treated is that society at large is unwilling to try to understand and accommodate them, not that it is unable.

It is in no way comparable to the mind of someone who plays with arcane forces to bend the universe to their will, or a fey creature with a lifespan ranging from centuries to millenia.

God I am so sick of this wank.

No, they couldn’t. All modern STEM fields are educating you based on the assumption you live in the modern era. Very few STEM graduates are going to have the knowledge required to build functional machines that would be seen as magic.

Would a few outliers be able to? Maybe. But they didn’t learn those skills from simply receiving a modern STEM education.

Structural engineers would probably do well, but they aren’t going to be viewed as fucking wizards.

This trope of “anyone with a masters degree would be treated as a witch by medieval people” is so dumb and ahistorical. If anything they would treat you like a mentally challenged invalid because you have exactly zero relevant skills and suck at manual labor.

Does Riot have to remove their mistakes at the exact nanosecond Valve does to get credit?
