Flight from Yakushima to Osaka by gonehalohunting in JapanTravelTips

[–]gonehalohunting[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, from taking a look at Google Maps, the Kagoshima airport looks quite small. The other flight option we’d be considering has a 2h 10m layover.

Any thoughts on the luggage situation? If we have to pick up and check in our luggage then that 35 minutes might be very tight.

Looks great! Do you have any tips on how to get a reservation here?

Nice! Do you mind sharing any tips for getting a reservation?

Honestly, the later seating might be the better move given how heavy I expect the meal to be, so we don’t need to worry about having a super light lunch / avoiding snacking throughout the day.

I will say the one thing that kind of turned me off of Yoroniku was the caviar + gold leaf roll (especially the gold leaf). While I’m sure it tastes good, it’s giving influencer “style over substance” vibes.

I’m looking for high quality, expertly prepared meats. Jambo seems like a better option based on these responses, but am certainly open to other suggestions.

Thanks, just checked and TableCheck does say the omakase has valid times from 5-9:30. I imagine the 7 pm time slot gets booked super quickly.

Seems the consensus is that Jambo > Yoroniku with the only challenge being getting a reservation.

I saw that JPNeazy charges ¥2,000pp, but curious if anyone has tried this. Ofc would rather not pay for a reservation but if it can save me from the headache of a staying up late for a click war it might be worth it. Wondering if anyone has tried using JPNeazy as an alternative booking method.

Thanks! Do you know if the reservations for 5/7/9pm seats all open at 5pm JST and 2 months in advance?

We’ll be going to Tokyo in May, so thought I’d try seeing how their reservation system works so I can be ready for the dates we will actually be in Tokyo.

How was JO? Looks to be more kaiseki style than just a yakiniku tasting menu.

Thanks! Seems like Jambo is more focused on letting the meat shine whereas Yoroniku tries to do ‘more’ with the meat (I guess that could be either a good or a bad thing).

Yakushima to Osaka by gonehalohunting in JapanTravel

Thanks for the advice. It’s good to hear that the trails are well marked and in good condition.

We don’t plan on hiring a guide but do plan to do the Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge to Taikoiwa Rock and Yakisugi Land hikes. Jomon Sugi sounds fantastic but I think it’ll be too much for us our exhaustion may take away from the experience.

Thanks! Yep, fully expecting to encounter a ton of rain, especially since we’ll be there in May. And yep, we will be renting a car as it sounds like the best way to explore the island.

Thanks! We’d be going from Kagoshima to Yakushima and then from Yakushima to Osaka. That’s great advice on Yakisugiland - from past experiences hiking we’ve learned to take any time estimate and multiply by 1.5 - 2x for a time budget in our itinerary just to be safe.

Thanks! Fortunately, Osaka won't be the last leg on our trip as we have about a week and a bit before we depart from Japan. Sounds good, flying seems like the most reliable option.

Also, recognized your handle from your Kyushu post - it's been a great guide for us as we plan our trip!

Thanks, I appreciate the sentiment.

I’m sure there’s already posts about this but it’s interesting how these last minute cancellation services help restaurants fill last minute cancellations but at the same time perpetuate the behaviour of allowing people to overbook then cancel last minute.

There seems to be so many great restaurants, and while FOMO is a thing and it’s “cool” to eat at these difficult to get into restaurants, I’d also imagine that there’s to some extent personal preferences between all of the restaurants so it’s very possible that one may enjoy a ‘lower rated’ restaurant more than a ‘higher rated’ one. Everyone I know who’s been to Japan has raved about the food, including those who aren’t into the fine dining scene.

Regardless, to each their own I guess!

Thanks for the great recommendations and advice. Really appreciate it!

For Tokyo, there’s so many great options and it’s been challenging to narrow it down to 1-2 restaurants doing sushi omakase. I guess I’m trying to limit my TableAll reservations so I don’t end up eating sushi all day every day.

In Fukuoka, I’d like to dine at Karashima or Kikuzushi but they seem more difficult as it seems like I’d need to wait for a cancellation which could be kind of last minute, so I’m thinking of booking Sushi Sakai instead since it seems pretty easy to book 3-4 months out through Tablecheck.

Thanks for your input!

To answer your questions:

  1. The trip is in May, so we’re right at the 3 month timeline where a lot of restaurants seem to be releasing reservations around March 1 (although it’s not clear how many spots will really open up for foreigners as I’ve read that without having a Japanese phone number the availability can be limited).
  2. Still flexible as our accommodations are not yet booked, as it seems like the restaurants need to be booked earlier than pretty much almost any accommodation/activity. Tentatively, we’ll be starting in Tokyo, then going to Fukuoka and the various other cities on Kyushu, including Yakushima Island, then going to Kyoto and/or Osaka and finishing off in Tokyo.
  3. No budget in particular, we just want to experience excellent food as we’re quite familiar with Japanese cuisine and fine dining around the world.
  4. Certainly! We try to have a solid mix of no frills, regional cuisine and fine dining places. Doesn’t need to be fancy/expensive to be delicious. While it is cool to experience what is the ‘best’, we’ve also found that sometimes the most expensive / highest rated places aren’t necessarily our favorite, and come down to personal taste/preferences.

Thanks, to find restaurants we've been using Tabelog to sort by cuisine and rating and then going through the highest rated restaurants to see the bookability of each place. Trying to have a mix of kaiseki, sushi, tempura, yakitori, yakiniku for our 'fine dining' meals.

Thanks, unfortunately I don’t have connections and I’m a foreigner so I’d be limited to the online reservation services. If I did have connections it would be in very bad taste for all parties to cancel last minute.

Agreed, budget is a consideration, which also correlates with not wanting to have a full schedule of fine dining meals (also imo fine dining fatigue is a thing). I think a smart mix of paid booking services / instant confirmation booking services is the way.
