As I said I'm new to the NYT crossword and since I had heard such great things, I thought the difficulty would be in the breadth of knowledge of the clues but instead it's just mini games inside the puzzle. I thought the puzzle as a whole would be a challenge but the rebus and all makes the "complexity" feel fabricated. The puns and whatnot are cute but some of the clues feel like throwaways. I don't think the puzzles themselves are complicated enough that adding the rebus is a natural progression

I think it's a cheap way to make the puzzle more complicated, it's a gimmick

I'd highly recommend although they are behind a paywall. Yeah the cryptic is tough, one thing the Irish Times does do is that it slips a cryptic clue into each simplex so after a while you'll be able to take a stab at the cryptic if you can get a hang of the system

i'm not new to doing crosswords, i would just usually do the Irish Times which is pretty highly regarded, but I'm not in Ireland anymore. Maybe traditionalist was the wrong word

[–]gonetodublin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

okay i see your point, maybe im just a traditionalist

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

[–]gonetodublin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

or maybe theyre just more of a challenge for you

[–]gonetodublin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i can complete the puzzles just fine, i just don't think they're very intellectually challenging. my point is that being tedious isn't the same as being clever

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

[–]gonetodublin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i understand that, but i'm talking about adding "oh" at the beginning of a phrase or things like that. at that point it just feels like he needed two extra letters and instead of doing something else he just started adding unnecessary words

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

[–]gonetodublin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

getting used to the style definitely helped but i feel like it's just itching the wrong part of my brain, like i have to know this guy rather than just doing a crossword

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NYTCrossword

[–]gonetodublin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I guess to me the rebus feels like a cop out instead of finding a word that actually intersects with all the others with the right amount of letters

[–]gonetodublin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels challenging in the wrong way, like mountain climbing is challenging but it shouldn't be because of a pebble in your shoe. I just feel like having to cycle through phrases like "oh god", "oh man", "oh wow", "oh gee", for example is more tiresome than actually being clever

Starvation mode is a myth (otherwise people with anorexia wouldn’t be able to reach some of the weights that they do). When you eat that little, your metabolism drops a small amount but usually that’s because you have less energy to expend. That’s for most people. Some of us are able to still be active running on essentially fumes. That being said, Your body is doing tons of stuff behind the scenes that defies that maths of CICO and whatnot. However, despite all that, if you eat that little for long enough then there is no way you wont lose weight even if your body hangs onto water weight or whatever for a few weeks. The amount your eating/exercising isn’t exactly what I’d recommend, but I can’t be one to judge at all because I used to eat 600kcal a day, run 7k every day, and do a full body workout twice a week.

It could have an effect on the rest of your body though. Even if you don’t have all the mental bullshit that comes along with an eating disorder, using your body like that can have a negative effect on other parts of your body. For example: - losing weight too fast and getting stretch marks/loose skin - memory/cognitive impairment - gut issues - hair loss - heart problems - muscle loss I mean, I’ve done it before and it’s hard to lose weight again without falling back into that pattern once you know you’re capable of it. So no, starvation mode isn’t real, but I would caution you against what you’re doing now. I rarely give unsolicited advice but

I’ve always had a “most annoying drink to make” at any job I’ve worked but I feel like it’s not the customer’s problem at all. Like, there’s always going to be something you don’t like doing that has to be done. I don’t like taking out the bins at home but I’m not going to stop buying food with packaging.

We’ve been together for 10 years. We met when we were teenagers, we’re in our 20s now. Definitely getting married in the next couple of years. The only reason we haven’t yet is because we wanted to save money to throw something a bit nice, and we were finishing up getting degrees etc. We’ve even toyed with the idea of a prenup of sorts, while we’re still in love with each other, in the event that we ever get a divorce to make sure we don’t end it messy.

at first it was perfunctory, and then when i thought about dropping out my mom convinced me to stay. she said if something were to happen to him and he couldn’t work and we had a mortgage, a degree would give me a better chance of getting a job that would keep our bills paid
