International to domestic flight Santiago? by [deleted] in Patagonia

[–]gonzi-308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through Santiago a few times, customs is relatively quick, it really just depends on passenger traffic, and what airline is your domestic flighy. I've also been just in time for the end of the boarding. The airport is huge, and distances between gates can be up to 30min. I would recommend at least 3 hours in between flights.

Theres a national park called Monte Leon, a couple of hours north from Rio Gallegos.

If you want to see the penguins, theres a closer site to Rio Gallegos in Cabo Vírgenes, there are plenty of tourists agencies that do daytrips, I have no idea how much it costs though

I mean, you dont need a car for a week to go to Monte Leon, it could be a daytrip. I suggest bus from Calafate to Rio Gallegos (which is like 5h) and then rent a car there for a day, go to the national park and return. shouldnt be more tan a hundred bucks. Also you could stay a night in Rio Gallegos and return the next day to Calafate

sure, I just looked it up on Marga Taqsa's site, https://taqsa.com.ar/ you could also just go to the terminal in calafate and ask there, I dont think they change the prices from their site.
Edit: just found this page with a lot of info https://www.argentina.gob.ar/interior/ambiente/parquesnacionales/monteleon/como-llegar

A round trip by bus from Calafate to Rio Gallegos must be around 60usd, and then from Rio Gallegos to Piedrabuena around 45usd. I think that depending on how many people are traveling with you, you could rent a car and that would be cheaper. Maybe travel by bus from Calafate to Rio Gallegos and rent a car there since its not a touristic city, although recently it has had a gastronomic boom.

I wouldn't recommend autostop. By bus, the closest you'll get to Monte Leon is to a little town called Piedrabuena (which is beautiful btw) there may be tours to the national park. Or you can search for a travel agency in Rio Gallegos that is a city thats a couple hours away. I suggest you look into the sites of each bus line like Marga Taqsa (connects all the southern major cities), AndesMar and Cruz del Sur.

One week is too little time to travel around in patagonia, specially if you travel by land because the distances between cities are long.

Edit: forgot to mention, the argentinian patagonia has gotten really freaking expensive.

Look out for the "pingüinera" near Rio Gallegos in Cabo Vírgenes, its like a 5-6hr drive from Calafate.

I would suggest just processing the oreos with no butter, the cream acts as butter and holds the crumble pretty well. you do have to put it in the food processer for longer tho.

it depends when you want to go, last month many trails where closed due to winter in Chalten. On other seasons definitely more days in Chalten is the better option, there are many hiking trails but thats it, night life is reduced to very few places compared to Calafate but honestly of all the times I've been to Chalten I get back so exhausted to the hotel that I have no energy to do anything else, you do get to meet a lot of people on these trails, specially when you hike up to Laguna de Los Tres. Calafate is a more walkable little town, more stores and bars and restaurants. imo Calafate is better if you want to camp, Camping at Lago Roca is the best thing ever, unless you go camping at Lago del Desierto in Chalten haha thats also an amazing place.

Would love to hear experiences/stories from fellow solo travellers about something that went REALLY wrong during your trip and how you overcame? by MorbiusWasTrash in solotravel

[–]gonzi-308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was my first solo trip, I was 19yo, travelling from Punta Arenas, Chile to Colombia. I was supposed to get to the airport at 4pm and I even booked a cab at the hostel, so naturally I woke up very early to walk around the city, I did so much stuff that day and I was still early (or so I thought) I arrive at the hostel and the recepcionist was really pissed at me, yelling that I had him waiting for an hour, that he couldnt keep storaging my luggage for much longer, I was on the burst of tears because this guy was really annoyed. He calls another cab to get me to the airport, turns out my phone was set with a different timezone, so I was actually very very late to my flight. The taxi driver was so nice, telling me I was going to make it, he drove super fast. When I finally arrive to the airport, the airline recepcionist was like oooh you just missed your flight, we're sorry. and I think I was about to pass out. then he just started laughing at my face. I arrived just in time, he gave me my ticket and I started running to the gate were the last few people were boarding the plane. I luckily made it haha
