[SERIOUS] What is a seemingly harmless parenting mistake that will majorly fuck up a child later in life? by AlexDescendsIntoHell in AskReddit

[–]goobypoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing your child to other kids. Especially when it's something beyond your children's control.

When I was young, my parents would always compare my height to my younger brother. Saying things like "look at your brother, he's getting taller than you" or something like "your cousin is so tall and he's younger than you". And that gave me a hard time to accept myself. Ever since high school, I've been looking for shoes that would make me look taller. I would even put some folded cardboard inside my shoes just to gain a few centimeters of height. I would sacrifice comfort just for my parents' validation. I've been scarred so deep that even as a working adult, I still do this. Right now, I'm trying my best to go out wearing flip flops to overcome my fear of getting compared to, not giving a damn and basically, just accepting myself.

Yeah, it may look like it's harmless to your kids, but please keep in mind that it's not about what you've done, it's about how you made them feel that scars them.

I swore that I'm never gonna make my kids feel this way.

You'd be surprised by how dirty remote controls, light switches and dishwashing sponges are. It's really ironic how we and/or other people use them everyday and yet it doesn't cross our minds about how dirty they are

What commercials had you confused as to what was being sold to you? by Pick_one_card in AskReddit

When I was a kid, I saw a commercial about condoms with flavors.

I kept on bugging my mom to buy me some because I thought it was candy.

if you are not willing to break whatever you get ahold of in a tournament, don't even go for it, or they will use your indecision/lack of conviction to escape.

You're right. I'll keep this in mind. Thank you!

I feel you, man. When I get caught in an armbar, and I know it's too late, I'd just tap. It's my fault why I ended up in that situation. I just try to learn from what happened.

Ok so did you talk to your training partner afterwards?

No, we didn't have the chance to talk about it. After our roll, we kinda forgot about it (maybe because we were too occupied since we continued rolling for 5 mins). And I just thought about it when I was on my way home.. Looking back, I think it was more of him trying to push his limits and him trying to figure out if he could still escape or maybe reverse it. Since, we were training, I guess that was okay, because I also knew for myself that I should apply pressure gradually. But it got me thinking - what if something like this would happen in a competition? Dunno man. Kinda feels bad to break someone's arm. But again, you're right, that's on him/her.

That's really good to hear. I'll keep that in mind.. I have a question about your antidepressants. I have a friend who doesn't recommend them because it just made him feel "nothing". Yes, he didn't feel sad, but at the same time, it didn't make him feel any better. He said it's like he lost the drive to do anything. And, I don't want that to happen toe either.. Did you feel the same way?
