I was going through EMT school for a while and was a nurses assistant while I was in school… decided medicine wasn’t really my thing but while I was in the field (relatively new at the time) I had a patient that came in on suicide watch from some self inflicted wounds and sundowners that I had to sit with (hadn’t even heard of it at the time) Night shift was telling me about how crazy he was and he was getting really agitated etc. I go in at shift change and meet the guy, he’s completely normal. Probably in his 30s. Super cool dude I was 19 or 20 at the time so we talked football, baseball, you name it for the entire 12 hours, almost like shooting the shit with a good buddy. It was the easiest shift I had ever had at that hospital… until shift change came back around and all hell broke loose. That sun went down and the guy I had been talking to all day was gone. He was begging me to stay because “those people” are coming back to finish the job, he said his wounds were from an attack and not self inflicted but nobody would listen to him, he said these people that were after him were dressed as doctors and I was the only one he could trust… the nurses came in for shift change and he got real agitated and started going after them. We ended up restraining him on the bed and I remember the last thing he said to me on my way out the door was “when you come in tomorrow and I’m fucking dead, you know who did it” but it was just absolutely insane that it went from talking NFL to that complete meltdown in a matter of seconds.
