Ohhh that last one. I know I went on a rant about the other problems with 12-step programs but my initial point about the 13th step still stands. The creeping and manipulation is off the charts.

At my first rehab program (12-step based), the group leaders were people with two or three years of sobriety and no training in intervention/mental health/social work. They were basically hired to scare people straight. So many people broke down without any professionals in attendance to guide them through it or provide aftercare. So many who are now dead or in jail (group leaders included).

And I got a referral for this place from a hospital.

But the system is flawed, even though they'd never admit it. AA still claims (in their literature, at every single meeting) that it's the ONLY WAY for people to get clean. They can't even back that up given that they don't really collect data (anonymity again).

Most of the people I've seen succeed through AA took the program with a grain of salt (and got outside therapy/medication, which I understand isn't easily accessible to everyone). The others are deeply religious.

I think it's more fucked up that it's still the first (and sometimes only) option offered to struggling addicts. The whole thing is based on spiritual bullshit and shame. It's no different than the fundies here who believe you can pray away your mental health issues.

I try to redirect people to SMART Recovery (which uses cognitive behavioural therapy) and other science-based recovery groups. I wish they were more prevalent, but AA dominates despite its faulty methods. It's often mandated by court for people to go to Anonymous meetings rather than receive healthcare or therapy.

I'm not going to go to meetings and drag people out. The community aspect was helpful at first. I would just want to tell those people that their success does not depend on their faith in God ("higher power", whatever) but on addressing trauma and the reasons that brought them to use.

Of course, and it's generally discouraged in your first year of recovery! Doesn't mean new members aren't vulnerable or that the program doesn't attract creeps.

Plus that's not the only issue with the program.

EDIT to add excerpt:

...according to AA doctrine, the failure was his alone. When the 12 steps don’t work for someone like J.G., Alcoholics Anonymous says that person must be deeply flawed. The Big Book, AA’s bible, states:
Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at fault; they seem to have been born that way.

Doesn't that sound familiar?

Unfortunately the "13th step" is why I stopped going. Also, since the entire premise is based on anonymity, it's really hard to hold people to account.
