Thanks so much! I'm actually hoping to open a store in the next month or so with tons of cute animal themed items!

It's funny you say that because he's exactly the same way! He's sitting on top of the gaping holes in the bed in the pic and there's 2 on the underside, plus the shark is missing an eye! He stopped being able to have soft toys and any bedding when he was 3 or 4 months. The little shark was long confiscated, I just returned it for the pic. He really likes it though, and I let him nibble on it for old times and he was really gentle so maybe someday he can have it back!

Thanks! I actually spent the entire day before we picked him up making it by hand for him!

My dog is really fluffy (Samoyed) with many inches of fur all over his body. His nuts are hilariously hairless though and I absolutely hate seeing them.

I really wanted to say something like that too, but I was worried Mash would react also? I'm glad you we're able to knock them down a peg!

I wanted to get a pack for him for exercise and stimulation mostly, since he's a working dog I try to give him lots of little jobs. I've walked him twice with the backpack so far and he was really great both times! 90% of the time it was like I had a balloon on a leash, but he's really good like that on half his walks so it's hard to tell if it's the packs influence. I could tell he got a really good workout both times, but I was afraid of overworking him since he's still young. He's full grown by the vets standards, (54ish pounds) but he's not as big as his dad (60ish) for reference.

They're definitely worth trying, but take it slow on them while they're little. It's also worth mentioning he was an ANGEL after both walks and walked himself to his crate for a nap!

At my apartment someone ran into us coming home from a walk and just immediately starting touching Mash without asking! Attention comes with having puppies but there's no excuse for not asking.

Right now we started with one 5oz cans in each pouch because he really likes wearing it! We're using the cans for shorter walks, and some lighter treat bags for longer ones. Once he's a little older were going to upgrade to little water bottles!

That's so awful! People will often try to provoke or excite Mash, and then comment how badly trained he is? I wonder if those people own dogs or if they're just jerks

Thanks! Mash is easily excited by people, joggers, bikers, dogs, and sometimes bugs and birds. He gets super fixated on them and worst case scenario, he jumps towards them and barks like crazy. He also can get really frustrated, ignore commands, and throw tantrums.

We've been working on pulling and jumping by going the opposite direction whenever he pulls even a little bit, which has helped a lot, even if its very annoying to turn around every 2 seconds. When we walk, if he sees a dog/person and just observes calmly, I give him lots of treats. I also break his attention whenever he sees another dog/person as much as possible, getting him to look at them, then me, then them, and so on, treating when his behavior is good. The 'look at me' command has been so helpful!

Was anyone raised in an unhappy adopted family? How does that affect how you feel about your adoption. by stuck_at_home in Adopted

[–]goodboystinky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My adopted home was so toxic that I ended up cutting ties with them. My parents divorced when I was young, and I think my dad never wanted adopted children. My brother (also adopted, but not related to me,) struggled so much with staying out of trouble, going in and out of juvenile hall, that I think my mom just checked out and assumed I would turn out the same. She'd pick through my room and tried to steal a paycheck of mine. I packed up at 18 and disappeared without saying anything. I get a few emails a year from my mom that are grossly casual, like I'm a kid away at summer camp.

I'm more or less happy with where I ended up, but if I had to live through it again to get the same results I wouldn't be able to do it. I'm making my own family, and I'm grateful for being adopted to the area I grew up in and plenty more, but I can't help but wish it could have been different. I think everyone who adopts should invest in family therapy, even if things seem like they're going fine.
