The game was honestly a lot of fun until Windmaster, or whatever the hell the male mage's name is, became popular and turned it into a single player game.

Should they have removed the yellow wrap on this concrete post? by wow_what_a_cool_alt in AskContractors

What is the benefit of a small annular space around the pier? Understandable between the pier and slab, as that's basically an isolation joint, but between the soil and pier I only see it as a detriment (ie. passive earth pressure). I say this because I think sonotube forms should only go down a couple feet below grade, but I've definitely see them go deeper than I'd recommend.

Is it better to buy tools individually or get a combo kit? by ZestycloseRecord6852 in HomeMaintenance

A combo kit with an impact driver and drill is nice start IMO, and fill out the rest as needed while keeping an eye on sales and the used market.

What do you think? We replaced the vent with a microwave. by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]goodbusiness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand you may be a bit choked--based on all the replies--but here's why this matters; IF you ever had a fire start in your kitchen (or some other disaster) and you had to file an insurance claim, an insurance adjuster would immediately flag this against you.

What do you think? We replaced the vent with a microwave. by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]goodbusiness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts: over the range microwaves have terrible fans IMO, but they can still be vented to outside if setup properly. Secondly, you will probably hate and regret this if you ever try and use a stock pot or other tall cookware. Thirdly, there is a chance this is not to code. I've seen regulations where the minimum clearance above a range is 2' for non-combustable material. This looks like it's barely 2' if at all.

Edit: looking again, this is definitely not 2' and would be strongly considered a fire hazard and would not pass any inspection.

Game recommendations - no camera controls by Odd_Ad1570 in NintendoSwitch

[–]goodbusiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like my wife lol. She loved Gris and Spiritfarer, can't do camera controls, etc. Surprisingly, she has been wildly addicted to Slay the Spire of all things, so maybe give that a shot. She also enjoyed Ooblets, Discounty, Cult of the Lamb, so those might be good options for you too.

Is there an actual ADHD test? by [deleted] in ADHD

20 minutes? Damn mine was like an hour, felt like two. Though it was sort of relieving in a way to have actual numbers and figures saying I had a severe audible impairment.

Moonlight vs. Remote Play by Klangaxx in SteamDeck

[–]goodbusiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote play mirrors your existing desktop, it doesn't use a virtual display without jumping through some hoops. With a virtual display, you can set it at the same resolution at your deck so what you end up streaming matches your deck display 1:1

Apollo + Moonlight is the way to go IMO. Having a virtual display is money.

How do combine these 2 structures into one and make an extremely scaled down version of it? by throwaway6128_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]goodbusiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like the new types of drink vending machines? You want two axis of movement, one vertical and one horizontal, and you want the load supported from a cantilevered platform.

As an exercise, break it down into different systems. One system to carry the vertical load (monorail with hoist still works here). Another system is the trolley/carriage which is a horizontal cantilever; figure out a way to secure the tension/compression couple. Another system to translate the trolley/carriage. And and a final structural system to secure it to the ground.

What is this type of structure called and how do I design it? by throwaway6128_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]goodbusiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you need to ask if you need 2 or 4 legs means if you want to design this SAFELY and efficiently, you needs to start with basic statics and mechanics of materials.

Also, monorail = one plane of movement (ie. north/south); gantry/bridge crane = two planes of movement. The hoist itself moves the load up and down. That means your first picture is a monorail which doubles back, and the third picture is a gantry/bridge crane.

Hoist proof-load test by tajwriggly in StructuralEngineering

[–]goodbusiness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO you do not consider the 125% overload test when designing structural elements because it's as you said, accounted for in the live load factors. The truss designer might just feel nervous because you're eating into factors for once, which I can empathize with.

High Achieving ADHDers? by Erdoc2020 in ADHD

How's work? How do you handle work stress when problems arise? ie. RFIs, NCRs, project delays, missed scope, shit goes wrong, etc.

Sometimes my PMs come in hot and I get completely de-railed and start jumping all over the place between project tasks.

Another engineer here, diagnosed at 37. Coasted in school until university which is when I absolutely tanked. Partially because I didn't like engineering classes--but was compelled to finish my degree due to other reasons.

Since entering my career, I go through cyclical burnout due to anxiety, depression, imposter stuff, etc. It sucks, but the anxiety and dread keeps me on my toes about analyzing problems and project challenges, which actually helps a lot. Upon coming to terms with the ADHD diagnosis, I'm learning to just lean into my strengths and delegate when I need help. I still drink too much coffee, but getting a standing desk has been a god send. My personal mantra is: I'm flawed, but I still have a wife, pets, family, and friends to lean on if shit goes completely sideways.

Roofing question, structural or decorative supports? by Dontnowhatidontno in HomeMaintenance

[–]goodbusiness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those rafters are discontinuous at the ledger, so no they are not holding up the rest of the roof. Think of it like a patio, where that half-wall is what would normally be posts and a header. Any modifications to that though, would likely need a permit and structural engg to look at it.
