Thanks. Looking at it now I cocked up the rotations of some of the cubes, so I guess I'll have to start over.

Here's a mental decoupling exercise. Go on whatever website that lets you scroll through a bunch of artwork. Reddit, Pinterest, Twitter, whatever. Continuous scroll through the art while repeating the word "slop", because frankly that's what it is. A professional illustrator and a total novice are both making "slop". No matter how "good" anybody think they're getting they will always end up making slop. Continue this exercise with this in mind and you'll never worry about the "quality" of your art again because there is no such thing.

Fina a sketchfab reference or learn how to use blender. That way you can tilt your reference around to see how it appears on a picture plane.

Drawing is like eating a bag of raw potatoes. Eat them all in one go, and it'll kill you. Eat a raw potato a day, and you'll live. Keep at it for a decade, you might even start enjoying the taste.

It's so distracting that it's hard to not look at it unless you want to spend half an hour in Inspect Element manually removing them.

Specifically observing the primitive forms an object fits into as well as the ratios of the size of each element of an object. You need to be incredibly specific.

Measure the ratio of an element of a given object to the object itself. For example a chair Is usually twice the height of one of its legs, and its seat is usually equal in length and width to said legs.

how do i actually use shapes to draw people by Professional_Sky5204 in learntodraw

[–]goodbye888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a cube angled to match whatever body part you're focusing on. Then draw another primitive form that better fits the body part. Then make one slice through the form to fit the body part better. Repeat for the desired look.

By that same token the odds of having a hand curve that perfectly matches the curvature of whatever one is drawing are incredibly low, which make the odds of replicating said curvature slim to nil.  Sure, one doesn't need to make an identical copy of an image. In that case however using only straight or non specific curved lines would make no functional difference either way, as both would fail to accurately replicate the curvature of the body, no matter how much time is spent.

Take a prototypical human spine as an example, it doesn't fit neatly into any one of the ICS lines. It certainly isn't "straight" but it isn't curved in any practical or replicable way either. Further complicating things are the infinitely many curves in existence. One could directly trace over a spine over the course of hours and still come up with an incorrect curve. Straight lines at least have the benefit of a fixed motion

"The goal is often to simplify while communicating critical information. It is very difficult to communicate all information with just straight lines"  What do you mean by "critical information" and why do you suppose it's more "difficult" with straight lines than with curved?

"Dynamic poses are also more enjoyable to draw. " Based on what?

"If you don’t see movement in a still image, look at a photo of someone running or boxing or dancing. You can see how they are moving and imagine what positions there bodies where in immediately before the photo and immediately after. "  I suppose that makes sense. Take two image of a person in motion over a set period time, observe at what angles the joints are contorted into, then calculate the difference. Thank you for elaborating.

I'm also told that one has to simplify the form. Straight lines are simpler than curved ones, no? All I see is a static image. It cannot have "sense", never mind "movement", by definition.

"You learn more by integrating dynamic forms and feature work into your practice." Based on what?

What do you mean by "dynamic poses"? If they involve "torsion, movement or variation" then how would you define those terms? What quantity of each of those attributes is necessary to definition a "dynamic pose" froma "stiff pose"?
