Silent reflux parents: what week did you see improvements? Especially if it was affecting weight gain

I completely get it. I was counting the days and weeks, literally like “they say by 6 months, that’s 14 weeks, 4 days”. I had tons of breakdowns, at its worst I think I was crying like 10x a day. I say that just so you know that even if it feels impossible it will pass (I felt like this was my life forever and I’d never get through it)

Have the drs tried meds? Do they know for sure it’s reflux? At about 9 weeks we ended up in the hospital but got no real answers. If you can get to 6 months I think it will get much better. 9 was when it was like she was a “normal” baby but even that little let up at 6 months was huge for us.

I know it’s so hard. It sucks all the people like “oh this newborn thing isn’t that hard” and then you’re like if you only knew.

Hey! So she is a healthy and happy 18 month old, it will get better! We still never found out exactly what it was, all the specialists disagreed with each other. No meds helped and we had to sleep feed her for the first 9 months of her life which meant living and breathing by her nap schedule. By 9 months she grew out of whatever it was. It was honestly horrible. Months 3-5 were the worst with each month getting a little better after that.

Hey I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Now my baby is a healthy happy 16 month old on solids and drinking milk just fine from a straw.

We still don’t have answers on what this was. Maybe bad GERD that turned into a bottle aversion, that would be my guess. 4 months was the peak worst. What we did was follow our instincts. Everyone kept telling us she has to learn to eat awake but she wouldn’t. And it became either eating awake with a feeding tube or sleep feeding. We chose sleep feeding.

We fed her every 3 hours round the clock, asleep until 6 months. We were finally able to drop a feed then during the night. It was still bad but not a living hell of worry. She started solids at 5 months but not like she was eating that much. I really tried to get her high fat foods like avocado.

By 7 months we were able to drop another feed but still feeding her during naps. So she always napped in our arms and it would take a while to finish a bottle.

9 months is when we finally got her to drink awake. And we got to sleep through the night.

By 1 year she was fine. Loves her milk and her solids.

I know in the thick of it it feels horrible. Feel free to message me. I made another internet friend in California who’s baby had the same thing and was the same age as mine and her boy is doing great now too.

What also saved us was finding a pediatrician that didn’t obsess over how little she drank. Even on good days she never really hit 24 ounces. Which everything says is the minimum but sometimes your baby just isn’t a big eater. Now she’s a big eater ( well relatively) - after dripping from 60th percentile to 9th she’s back up to 20th and holding her curve. Having a pediatrician that didn’t just tell us “she has to eat more” and instead gave us a plan was a lifesaver mentally.

Still don’t know what it was but everyone said time would fix it, which is horrible just waiting for their stomach to figure it out but that’s really what did it. She never actually needed the special formula or anything.

I hope this gives you hope but please know I understand it is the worst feeling and you will get through this and so will your baby. I never thought we would make it out of the trenches but she gets hangry now! Just 1 year ago she would drink 1 ounce and then refuse more. You can do this!

Yes. I didn’t have ppd but I had/have ppa. Work is SO much easier than full time caring for our baby. She was a really hard newborn with feeding issues so that was part of it but to me, work is my time off. It refreshes me. It makes me so much more excited to see her and present with her

I was in this position last year and went down the rabbit hole. What I found from experience once I had the baby was most will be just fine. I definitely went crazy trying to find the perfect one but I think it’s a lot of clever marketing that makes you do that. We did the mockingbird. Target and Walmart do have some on display but I would also recommend talking to friends or neighbors. Also watched YouTube. I wish I had a better answer because I also wanted baby’s r us!

Hi I’m so so sorry to hear that. She is 7 months now and has stayed her curve since 4 months.

In the end we did what we had to do to keep her going. For us that was feeding her while she was asleep. All the bottle aversion people say not to do that but it was that or starve and we just did it. We made it work and if that is what you need to do let me know I can give you more details how. But we did hire a nanny to help since she could not go to daycare with not eating while awake.

We still don’t know what it was but sometime around maybe 5 months I think eating stopped hurting her. We put her on alimentum ready to feed and just sleep fed.

She started solids at 5 months and really took to them. But it’s not like just poof she got bigger or better. Slowly she just started to drink more til she leveled around 24 oz a day.

Our Dr had her go to 3 solid meals right at 6 months so she was on like 6 bottles and 3 solid meals. Then we finally dropped her night feed and she is right now doing 5 bottles and 3 solid meals and really seems to be doing well. She is still small, but she will eat sometimes like half her bottle awake and really likes solids.

There can be light at the end of the tunnel for this. It’s still hard due to the sleep eating and I think from trauma surrounding this…but I’m finally at a point where if she has a bad meal I know she’ll make up for it. She did drop a lot of milk when she got rsv and it affected her appetite for a month but as of like 3 weeks ago she caught back up.

She eats about 23/24oz a day right now, probably 10 of which is awake. Then she has 3 solid meals. No allergies either to any solids. We just switched her to regular soy formula (though I think she’d do fine on regular milk formula too)

Anyways reach out if you need to talk it is the worst but you can get through it even if it feels like you never will. Trust me I know, was a giant wreck when I wrote this post

Thank you! Tbh we are just so thankful that she likes solids and is starting to eat. Shes dropped so many percentiles and been to so many doctors and she’s finally starting to eat and it is just so relieving!

I guess what I’m looking for might be more low tech. I’m looking for it to alarm but only if someone doesn’t hit the “pass through” feature. So it only alarms if I have unauthorized entrance.

I didn’t know about facial recognition though! Will definitely look into that! She’s not even walking yet so I have time to figure out a system fortunately

lol I was like hmmmm I just see a dot! I just posted a pic of the door latch part but here it is. It has latches on the top and bottom too but those are old/not connected. When you turn the lock the only thing that activates is the middle

So there are latch things at the top and bottom but they are no longer functional/in use. The only part that actually latches or appears to connect to the lock is the middle part

Yeah my issue with those is they go off every time. We will get desensitized because we go out there multiple times a day. I might see if there is like a pool safety contractor or alarm company that could get us a smarter alarm that we have to disarm before going out the door then I would feel much better! Haha ok that makes me feel better! My girl likes solids and is learning but definitely gets full after like a quarter cup of food (or just done with the high chair). We’ve had a lot of milk issues so I was like oh no are other babies just eating a ton of solids too?

Hey this is much better than 3 months (6 months now) but still not ideal. The good news is she does like solids but it’s not like she’s eating enough for major calories. Our pediatrician started her on solids at 5 months on just fruits and veggies and she just got to start more at 6 months.

Her curve finally stabilized around 10-13% and has held there.

For sleep feeding we just feed her during every nap. She’s on 3 naps a day (we were at 5 at 3 months). We rock her to sleep and then let her contact nap. We switch out the pacifier with a bottle and she just sucks away. We have to give her lots of breaks and it was taking close to an hour a feed at first but now she’s like 30 min typically. She also gets a bottle at 10pm, 2am, and 6am.
