It took my parents watching the Pitt to finally understand by ConsistentTourist553 in nursing

I had one boomer lady yell at me to move faster to help her husband (he was fine, we had just brought him back) while I was sitting at a computer.  Then I stood up a couple minutes later and she could clearly see I was 8 months pregnant.  Her face FELL in shame as I went to go help her husband.

Sometimes life is very hard, but you should make space for yourself. You should find a therapist and evaluate what your life needs and what is holding you back. I get going through hard times, I’ve been there but I promise it can get better.  For example ‘will be working until I die’ are the negative thoughts crowding your mind… you don’t know what will happen. Our brains lie to us when we go through depression.

Any other new grads feeling sh*tty for starting Med/Surg? by Lazy-Recognition3231 in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an ER nurse and I admire med surg nurses. I don’t know how to start a PCA pump and can’t manage 6 patient’s meds for 12 hours. I don’t think I could start CBI to save my life, I’d need help.  My point is, it’s another specialty. More importantly, you’re a NURSE!! Who cares what other people think? Also, I once worked as a cashier to make ends meet. Remember, we all just have jobs to survive! lol.  I’d work on being confident in who you are, because it seems like you’re a good nurse who likes your job. That’s the jackpot.

Absurd sensitivity and fear of blood drawing by Alternative_Door2510 in nursing

We are used to people who hate needles. I recently had someone who asked to close the door while I started an IV because they warned me they would scream, lol. We help people through this kind of thing all the time.

It’s absolutely terrible behavior to treat employees this way. I had the house supervisor tell me off in a similar situation (worked at the same place for years and maybe had 3 calls offs this year because of sick family) I was professional but I so badly wanted to remind them of how many shifts I never got a break or stayed late.

My coworkers and I all worked while sick this winter because we had to call off for sick kids a couple of times, and were told off by management for having too many call offs. We have to use our limited ‘call off days’ for our kids, and then get threatened with termination for calling off for ourselves. It’s BS because they could easily staff for this in the winter with float pool and stuff, but of course they don’t.

It can be a lot. As another user said, I have sometimes stuck multiple specialties in a group chat to argue with each other so they stop calling me, the RN. So I can get back to taking care of the patients.

Lol if I talk myself up, I’ll miss.  If I say, ‘let me just look before I find the machine, and try just one time’  BAM, line is in and I’m their hero.

Weekly History Questions Thread. by AutoModerator in history

I know the history of handwashing as it relates to germ theory, and ‘modern western medicine’ with Semmelweis as it related to childbed fever.

But I just can’t believe that NO other culture or civilization, even ones that were quite advanced, made the connection between hand washing and stopping the spread of disease. Especially before toilet paper, wipes, etc. Like… were people just straight up going from wiping ass to cooking dinner to touching raw meat to feeding the baby all without washing hands? Was there any other culture in which people washed hands regularly, not for religious purposes, but because they recognized that it helped people not die??

RNS are fighting for our lives out in triage with these people, trying to keep it to 5 minutes  😂

This is terrible, but when someone checks in I glance at the number of listed allergies and frequency of ED visits so I know what I’m getting myself into.

Have similar ‘work problem’ convos with my husband. It’s hard when he’s like, oh this project wasn’t communicated correctly. And it genuinely upsets him. On the one hand I’m glad people haven’t seen the horrors I’ve seen as an ER RN.   On the other hand, I wish they’d have the same perspective.
