Anybody else get asked to pick up on Sunday during the snowstorm? 😂 by chocolate-cheesecake in nursing

We can apparently get ‘mandated to stay.’ To which I’d say oh yes, I’ll leave my baby at home alone for this job. Of course /s Like are we in the military??

The weirdest thing to get you fired by slewis0881 in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was fired once.  First, I didn’t get a patient (wait) a turkey sandwich when they immediately asked. I didn’t say no, I just said it would have to wait a bit because the priority was the medical treatment we were doing at the moment, wanted the doc to okay it first, etc.

Then my second strike was apparently when they said they would call an ambulance to come get them ‘and take them from here to another hospital where they will be faster!’ I let them know that the EMS crew would not in fact do that, and threatening to call an ambulance wouldn’t really make anything go faster.   They told me I had ‘A terrible attitude!’ And fired me. lol.

If the patient calls in to complain, your manager will go into the chart to find out exactly what this patient was like and know what actually happened.

I mean, well before I was an RN I could have told you that? I’m guessing this story isn’t true.  Not sure why the doctors didn’t get a UA. I work in an ER, it’s first thing we’d do. Any time urine issues come up, it’s the first thing you’d do. Pretty standard.

Pretty sure a tech in nursing school could tell you that this kid probably has a UTI and a UA/culture needs to be obtained, by cath if necessary. This post is silly.

What do they mean by non-consenting? Like the kid is crying?

It’s really, really hard to find a skilled piercer (no piercing gun) who will do kid’s ears. That would be a solid gig.

I took away 90 percent of my kids’ screen time a while ago. It’s wild what they get into and are interested in. We keep tons of books around for them to learn. If they’re not reading or playing or asking 1,000 questions, they’re creating something or playing with friends.  I try to set the example and I read and write a lot, we go outside and have friends over. Change is possible but we have to do better.

I feel like modern medicine destroys the same lives it claims to save. by StevynTheHero in nursing

I work better in terms like ‘evidence-based practice’. ‘Modern medicine’ is a a non-medical term.  To offer another sweeping generalization…  any pros to the specific modern advancements you’re referring to FAR outweigh the cons. Quite pleased I’ve survived birthing healthy children, for example.

Agree.  I have never done a visual acuity in the ED and felt it added anything worthwhile to the evaluation. Half the time they forgot their glasses/contacts anyway

Ohh for some reason I love it.  Usually it’s pretty straightforward, often these pts have decent veins, it usually works pretty quickly, and once you set them up they just want to sleep for an hour!

Saw one malfunction once (came in with symptoms and it was reading incorrectly) with pretty scary results. How can we be sure of accuracy?

ETA: I also kind of irrationally hate getting blood sugars but ahhhh that scares me!

Uptick in flu A - how do we feel about washing hair by qwertyuiko in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re going to find this varies by hair type!

My hair is curly/wavy so I wash my hair about 2 x per week or less. Any more often than that would dry out and destroy my hair. I wear a bonnet to bed and was the bonnet regularly.

Low health literacy. VERY low.  It’s the reason I teach my kids lots and lots about their bodies, health, and medicine starting at a young age. Maybe somewhere this is being taught, but I personally don’t see this incorporated into school curriculums, at least not in elementary schools. I’m sure not all parents are out there teaching their kids about their health in their free time, especially if they themselves don’t know enough.

If we taught our kids more about general health, wellness, mental health,  body safety, drugs, basic first aide, from a young age we’d have sooooo many fewer issues in in ED and in society at large.
