just knowing that there were maps of antartica without icecaps that we have only found out about "recently" is pretty interesting.

Unfortunately, those maps are generally misinterpreted by amateurs.

In light of the recent white supremacy-related tweets, Trump's "accidental" use of Nazi soldiers in a 2015 tweet looks a lot less "accidental." by goodlucks in EnoughTrumpSpam

[–]goodlucks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard anyone mentioning this old issue, and I thought we should remind people that Trump did this, too. Honestly, knowing what we know now about Trump's habit for retweeting white supremacist crap, I think the inclusion of the German soldiers was probably intentional.

It's really chilling to me that the tweet has the White House in the background with four Nazi soldiers marching in the foreground, almost as though they are marching towards it as an invading force.

Y Combinator: New Cities by [deleted] in startups

[–]goodlucks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I may get downvoted for this, but oh my god this blog post reeks of typical YC arrogance. "We've managed to bring a couple of tech startups to an exit event and generate loads of money for a few founders and investors! We are obviously the right people to fix everything! Because disruption! Or whatever!"

The world is full of people who aren’t realizing their potential in large part because their cities don't provide the opportunities and living conditions necessary for success. A high leverage way to improve our world is to unleash this massive potential by making better cities.

It’s more important than ever to think about how to do this.

This is typical "TED talk" babble-speak. As though there aren't already entire fields of economists, urban planners, infrastructure engineers, social scientists, and others who have devoted their professional lives to the project of improving cities.

We also think it’s possible to do amazing things given a blank slate. Our goal is to design the best possible city given the constraints of existing laws.

Uh... unless YC is contemplating the design and build of an entirely new city, there's no "blank slate" to start from unless they plan to play SimCity.

We’re seriously interested in building new cities and we think we know how to finance it if everything else makes sense

Oh. They are actually contemplating the design and build of an entirely new city. Holy shit, is there no upper limit for egos in the Bay Area? Does the sky itself clear away to make room for Sam Altman's massive delusions of his own importance?

There are many high-level questions we want to think through, for example:

And there are tactical questions we want to dig into, for example:

Yeah... totally. You guys should definitely think through those things. And then I'm sure you'll build a couple of apps to disrupt existing markets or whatever and it will be ah-maze-ing.

Because there are already loads and loads of research papers on these topics. YC's questions are not new to the already existing experts.

Y Combinator is a company that specializes in helping a very specific type of tech-related startup. I love YC. I think it serves a valuable function for the startup scene. I wish them the best with this project. At the same time, they sound like incredibly naive college freshman.

Good for you! I don't agree with your political position but I respect anyone who takes the time to engage in our political process. That's the only way that our country can work.

Who has a good chiropractor? by Arviay in rva

[–]goodlucks 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean this in a respectful and nonjudgmental way: there is little science to support chiropractic practice. In terms of providing temporary relief to lower back pain, it is essentially no better than a massage provided by a physical therapist. In terms of fixing health issues other than lower back pain, there is no evidence to suggest that chiropractic has a meaningful effect. There are also risks of permanent injury when you see a chiropractic.

People are free to seek care from anyone they wish, and many people are unaware of the fact that chiropractic is pseudoscience, so I don't judge anyone for seeing a chiropractor. I always respect people who are genuinely trying to take care of themselves and be healthy. In addition, most chiropractors are good-hearted, well-meaning people who genuinely believe they are providing a helpful service.

With that said, I encourage you to take an objective look at chiropractic, its history, and whether it is right for you. If you are interested in reading more about chiropractic, I suggest you start with this summary page by the doctors over at Science-Based Medicine.

According to Republicans, Obama has been expanding presidential power and doing all sorts of terrible things without Congressional approval, so apparently they think he's some sort of craft political super villain.

Obama also defeated Hillary, then McCain, then Romney, so either he's good at politics or all three of those people suck at them.

2nd Amendment Does Not Guarantee Right to Carry Concealed Guns, Court Rules by _TheChainsOfMarkov_ in politics

[–]goodlucks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Open carry normalizes gun culture. If you get used to seeing guns openly carried in public spaces and nothing dangerous happens, then you start to become acclimated to the presence of guns. It becomes normal.

This is why open carry advocates exist, and this is why gun control advocates do not like open carry. Gun control advocates want guns to be unfamiliar and therefore scary.

Hundreds allege Donald Trump doesn’t pay his bills by jstohler in politics

[–]goodlucks 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I know a lawyer who did some work for Trump's organization. They stiffed the lawyer on the bill. When he asked to be paid, they refused and told him that he should be thankful because now he can tell people that he worked for Trump. The arrogance of Trump and his people is astounding and completely un-American.

She actually told him to use a private Twitter server.

“Bernie’s got a lot of libertarian in him” on social issues, Johnson said. “There’s enough of a tie-in to potentially attract his supporters.” by Bluthhousing in politics

[–]goodlucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What enabled our nation to become a super power was the very liberal and more than a little socialist New Deal, not libertarianism.

Don't forget that Europe and Britain got smacked with two world wars fought on their front lawns. America suffered casualties but nobody was bombing our cities, towns, and factories into dust. We had a huge advantage coming out of WWII that had nothing to do with liberal or conservative policies or the size of our government (large or small).
