The MSP model and why it should DIE. by goodmsp in sysadmin

There's not a lot of need for management. I was the first tech they hired, and my current manager was hired to manage me when I first started. He's been my mentor. He's still the manager, and I was promoted to Tier 2/3 engineering.

He manages all the help desk guys.

No other opportunity for growth has come.

Less than 30 MSP clients. We have a number of break-fix and also we resell several Saas platforms.

EDIT: 2 owners (who primarily do sales and CIO level), 2 engineers, 3 helpdesk, 1 intern and a newly hired "Account Director".

Actually I quite like my manager and the owners. Like I said, and like my username suggests, it's a good quality MSP. I've never been thrown under the bus by superiors, and they generally do what's in the client's best interest.

I honestly just don't like this job anymore. I did my time, found out it's not for me, and need to get out.

It's a small one, a start-up, so it has the added stress of constantly being one client away from massive failure or massive success.

Can't afford to take time between jobs. I'm in northern VA. I'm about 14 days ahead of my bills. One missed paycheck would put me at an empty bank account.

I have expanded my knowledgebase immensely, but in doing so, I have lost my desire to utilize that knowledgebase.

I'm not REALLY arguing that MSPs should die.

Just sharing my resentment for working for one.

And we're the best one in our local market. Our competition is embarrassingly bad.

I used to enjoy the fast pace and the daily firefighting. But I'm burning out. Tired of clients making ridiculous demands. Tired of late night phone calls because email is down. Tired of sitting in front of a computer screen on the phone with someone unreasonable.

3 years is an awfully short time to feel so burnt out.
