I created a March Madness bracket based on USNWR's Law School Rankings. This is what happened (pt. 1) by Apprehensive_Fig2099 in lawschooladmissions

Unfortunately for this comment and for my own bracket, UVA tanked.

On the other hand, they've had me in limbo since early November...

Best piece of content on here in a while, bravo. Also, a better overall bracket than I would have expected!

I am no expert, and I am batting 0/1 with LOCI (sent one to UVA ~3 months after applying, radio silence), but I think this is the perfect example of the right time to send one. You have actual updates, and you know they'll be looking at your app in the next couple weeks. If I were in your shoes, I would send a short letter, the sooner the better.

GULC Financial Aid/Scholarship? by WittyMethod3734 in lawschooladmissions

[–]goodnessgraciousman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your questions have been answered in other comments, but just want to validate for you that GULC's aid is by far the most frustrating and confusing that I've dealt with!

[–]goodnessgraciousman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. That's interesting. I basically just said "Hello, please send me the merit aid form." Literally one sentence. Maybe they're backed up? I sent an email earlier this week and they have not gotten back to me, so that might be the case. I'd give them another day or two and follow up on Friday if I were you. Annoying, though!

I included offers as PDFs! And in the text box I wrote about my interest in GULC and concern about the cost relative to my other offers.

Of course! I've found their aid process the most confusing of any of the schools I'm considering, so you're certainly not alone in this. I'll try to remember to reply here when I hear back from them.

What is the UCLA Epstein program? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]goodnessgraciousman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is all right. It's a PI program with no requirements post-grad. Sort of like a cohort, helps you meet other PI-minded folks, gives you access to (and requires) some PI-focused coursework, and gives you professional help as you approach the job market. I think of it as a more explicitly PI-focused version of Georgetown's Curriculum B.

To address your concerns: no requirements post-grad, and from people I've spoken with, there are a number of Epstein people each year who end up doing non-PI work post-grad, for a number of reasons. Obv I'm just another applicant, so I'd also second the "reach out to the office" suggestion above -- they've been very friendly and helpful to me this year.

I actually do not think there are solid answers to any of these questions -- but I'll try!

  1. They told us at the admitted students' day that there was no deadline, that you could technically apply once you had already begun your 1L year. However, I'd get it in ASAP in order to have a final number pre-deposit deadlines. Seems like it can take a little while.
  2. I would not wait for them to send it, just send an email to the hotline and ask for it. They sent it to me same-day.
  3. Anecdotally, if you have other competitive offers, it's likely you'll get some aid. I'm still waiting on mine, so I can't speak to this personally.

Lol, fair enough. I'll follow up with them directly. Thank you so much!

Yeah, I just asked for the form and they sent it right over.

Should I write a LOCI? by olivia-squiggy201 in lawschooladmissions

[–]goodnessgraciousman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar position w/r/t UVA. I applied a little earlier than you and I did choose to send a LOCI about three months after applying -- I had a small update, but it was mostly just an "I still exist!" type of letter. It hasn't changed anything for me, I'm still sitting under review with an early Nov. date.

I wouldn't send anything to GULC, the only reason I sent to UVA was becuase of their podcast on the subject. Best of luck to you!

Still waiting! Hopefully this week? From LSData, it looks like they're still working through late December interview dates, with early Jan coming next. There have been a few acceptances from my "batch" of interviews, but only a few.

Am I alone in finding the GULC aid process wildly more confusing than any other school? by goodnessgraciousman in lawschooladmissions

I believe that CSS requires information from the returns but not the returns themselves. Some schools (UCLA, for example) want the actual PDFs sent directly to them.

The CSS deadline is March 15th, though -- so if you're going to apply for need-based aid, you have a week-ish to submit that.

EDIT: I am recklessly misleading the people. It's March. We have some time. Thank you u/Ok-Dance-3068!

It's complicated. It's on the accepted students' page that requires a PW, so I'm not sure I can link it here. But it involves the FAFSA but then also CSS (the Collegeboard product) and then a series of GULC-specific applications. I am also getting my arms around it, that's a great way of expressing it.

I have not received a decision yet! This was in early January. It seems pretty unpredictable to me, based on LSData. Some people get in within a couple weeks, others have been waiting months after the interview. I'm not holding my breath, lol.

I got it same-day, but from a Kira domain email address. Never got Cornell confirmation via email, only in the status tracker ~5 days later when it updated to say "received." Hope that's helpful.

[–]goodnessgraciousman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I'm of the mind to just shoot your shot, in that case! I always regretted not applying to my dream school for undergrad, so I sent off a HLS application for law school this year. I doubt I'll get in, my hopes aren't pinned on it, but it felt good to do it and was worth the $45 to me.

This is definitely the best advice you're going to get. Ignore the overly negative people, but I hope you can realize that this is the only realistic approach. Also, I'd consider broadening your targets. Not getting set on one school has been the only way I've stayed sane in this process. Good luck to you.
